  • Sally Matthews Is Magnificent
` DVORAK Rusalka, Glyndebourne Festival, Robin Ticciati. DVD Opus Arte Sally Matthews is magnificent. During the Act II court ball her moral and social confusion is palpable. And her sorrowful return to the lake in the last act to be reviled by her water sprite sisters would melt the winter ice. Christopher Cook, BBC Music Magazine, November 2020 Sally Matthews’ Rusalka is sung with a smoky soprano that has surprising heft given its delicacy, and the Prince is Evan LeRoy Johnson, who combines an ardent tenor with good looks. They have great chemistry between them and the whole cast is excellent. Opera Now, November-December 2020 SCHUMANN Paradies und die Peri, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Paolo Bortolameolli Matthews is noted for her interpretation of the demanding role of the Peri and also appears on one of its few recordings, with Rattle conducting. The soprano was richly communicative in the taxing vocal lines, which called for frequent leaps and a culminating high C … Her most rewarding moments occurred in Part III, particularly in “Verstossen, verschlossen” (“Expelled again”), as she fervently Sally Matthews vowed to go to the depths of the earth, an operatic tour-de-force. Janelle Gelfand, Cincinnati Business Courier, December 2019 Soprano BARBER Two Scenes from Anthony & Cleopatra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Juanjo Mena This critic had heard a fine performance of this music by Matthews and Mena at the BBC Proms in London in 2018, but their performance here on Thursday was even finer. Looking suitably regal in a glittery gold form-fitting gown, the British soprano put her full, vibrant, richly contoured voice fully at the service of text and music.

ROSEMARY HYLER RITTER Founder/Artistic Director Matthew Morris and Liza Stepanova Associate Artistic Directors “Bright is the ring of words when the right man rings them.” – Robert Lewis Stevenson THE COMPLETE RECITALIST MAY 31-JUNE 28, 2014 The Stern Fellowship Program for Singers and Pianists has generously been funded by The Marc and Eva Stern Foundation. We gratefully acknowledge and thank the Stern family! SongFest is thrilled to announce that two well-known members of our community have joined the artistic team as associate artistic directors this season: Matthew Morris, baritone (Stern Fellow ’10 and Faculty ’12,’13) and Liza Stepanova, pianist (Stern Fellow ’09 & ’10, Faculty ’11,’12, and ‘13). As a program dedicated to the unique marriage of poetry and music brought to life by a singer and a pianist, SongFest could not imagine a better team than these artists who both attended the program as participants and returned each year thereafter as faculty. Matthew has a unique performing career that combines recital (he most recently made his Kennedy Center debut as the winner of the Vocal Arts DC competition), concert (debuts with the London, American, Boston, and MDR Leipzig Symphony Orchestras), opera (including New York City Opera and Santa Fe Opera), theater (the Bouffes du Nord in Paris, West End, and Piccolo Teatro in Milan), and film and television (The Producers and Law & Order). He trained at the Juilliard School, at the Bard Conservatory with Dawn Upshaw, and with Peter Brook and Marcello Magni of the Lecoq school. We are honored that he shares his breadth and depth of experience each summer with our singers as Director of the Young Artist Program.

  • 21 Aug 2019 | Verdi's Rigoletto
Presented by: PRESS RELEASE Opera Hong Kong proudly presents Verdi’s Rigoletto A tragic story of jealousy, vengeance and sacrifice (21 Aug 2019, Hong Kong) Opera Hong Kong presents the production of the Fondazione Teatro Lirico di Cagliari, Rigoletto, composed by Giuseppe Verdi, in the last quarter of 2019, with the support of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, Hong Kong Arts Development Council, the Art Development Matching Grants Scheme of the Government of the HKSAR and Italian Cultural Institute. The opera in three acts will be performed on 9-13 October, 2019, at the Grand Theatre of Hong Kong Cultural Centre. K. Wah International Holdings Ltd. (KWIH) is the title sponsor of the 11 October performance. Verdi’s opera is based on the play “Le roi s'amuse” by Victor Hugo. The work brought Verdi his first international triumph and it is one of the most frequently performed operas in the world. The tragic story follows the hunchbacked court jester, Rigoletto, who encourages his master, the Duke of Mantua, to indulge in a licentious and lustful life, until his own daughter, Gilda, has fallen victim to the Duke's seduction. Rigoletto's plot to have his master murdered eventually backfires and results in Gilda's demise. Verdi expresses this tragedy with enchanting melodies; strong drama and plots; powerful characterization and intense emotions. Rigoletto is recognised as a timeless Italian treasure due to its compelling, blood-curdling revenge and beautiful story of honor. Rigoletto features some of opera’s most recognisable music, including “Woman is fickle” (“La donna è mobile”).
