Some Exploration Findings: T he existence of the Somali Current - -a 11 wes t ern b oun d ary current " r unning north past Afri ca and Arabia at speeds up to seven kn ots - -was confirmed. (The Gulf Stream in the Atlantic and the Kuroshio in the Pacific tra ve 1 at a maximum of four knots.) The Somali is th ouly boundary current to cross the equator and the only one that reverses itself with the seasons. Only surface deep, it races north during the summer when In­ dia's southwest monsoons are ragmg. When the monsoons die out, it reverses its path and heads gently south.
