The highest of 165 Sprattus sprattus (L., 1758) was studied from number of prey organisms belonged to the crustaceans. RESUMEN Una especie de Clupeiformes que ha sido habitual en las capturas de la flota pesquera artesanal que opera en el mar interior de Chiloé, Chile, ha sido confundida con la sardina común (Strangomera bentincki) y la sardina española (Sardinops sagax musica), cuyas distribuciones geográficas en esta área marcan su límite austral. Mediante un análi- sis de morfometría y recuentos de estructuras duras de siete ejemplares capturados en julio de 2005 y provenientes del área de pesca de Quicaví, Chiloé (42º17’S-73º22’W), se determinó, que correspondían a seis Sprattus fuegensis (Jenyns 1842) (sardina fueguina), y que ella estaría presente hegemónicamente en las capturas del mar interior de Chiloé; en la X Región administrativa de Chile. Basado en la captura de especímenes de S. fuegensis obtenidos en las cercanías de la Isla Guar, al norte de Calbuco en octubre de 2005, se realizó una breve descripción de otolitos y una comparación del diámetro longitudinal del primer anillo hialino entre ambas sardinas, mediante el uso del test no paramétrico de Mann-Withney; del mismo modo, se comparó la relación longitud del pez con el diámetro del otolito para ambas sardinas utilizando un ANCOVA.

Here we analyzed the annual cycle of body condition factor (K), gonadosomatic index (GSI) and maturity of sprat from the Skagerrak and Kattegat as well as from the Skagerrak inner fjords (Uddevalla fjords). The results show an inverse yearly pattern for K and GSI in both areas, K being the highest in autumn and lowest in spring, while the GSI index was highest in spring and lowest in autumn. The annual highest proportion of spawning fish was recorded from May to July, indicating the late spring and early summer as the main spawning period for sprat in these areas. Male sprat reached maturity at a higher size in the Uddevalla fjords compared to Skagerrak and Kattegat, while negligible differences were shown by females. The K, GSI and size-at-age were the lowest in the Uddevalla fjords, while K and GSI were the highest in the Skagerrak, potentially related to the different environmental conditions encountered in the different areas.

    Scophthalmus Rafinesque, 1810: The valid generic name for the turbot, S. maximus (Linnaeus, 1758) [Pleuronectiformes: Scophthalmidae] by Nicolas BAILLY* (1) & Bruno CHANET (2) ABSTRACT. - In the past 50 years, the turbot is referred to either as Scophthalmus maximus (Linnaeus, 1758) or Psetta maxima (Linnaeus, 1758) in the literature. Norman (1931) had argued that the valid name for the turbot was Scophthalmus maximus. However, his recommendation was never universally accepted, and today the confusing situation exists where two generic names are still being used for this species. We address this issue by analysing findings from recently published works on the anatomy, molecular and morphological phylogenetic systematics, and ecology of scophthalmid fishes. The preponderance of evidence supports the strong recommendation to use Scophthalmus as the valid generic name for the tur- bot. Acceptance of this generic name conveys the best information available concerning the systematic relationships of this species, and also serves to simplify the nomenclature of scophthalmid flatfishes in publications on systematics, fisheries and aquaculture, fishery statistics, ichthyofaunal and field guides for the general public, and in various legal and conserva- tion-related documents. This paper reinforces the conclusions of Chanet (2003) with more arguments. RÉSUMÉ. - Scophthalmus Rafinesque, 1810: le nom de genre valide du turbot,S. maximus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Pleuronecti- formes: Scophthalmidae). Depuis 50 ans, le turbot est dénommé dans la littérature soit Scophthalmus maximus (Linnaeus, 1758), soit Psetta maxima (Linnaeus, 1758). Norman (1931) avait montré que le nom valide pour le turbot était Scophthalmus maximus. Three sub-species have been defined [1], namely S. sprattus sprattus in the North-East Atlantic and North Sea, S. sprattus balticus in the Baltic Sea and S. sprattus phalericus in the Mediterranean and Black Seas. It is an important food resource for many top predators. Sprat is mainly landed for industrial processing (often mixed with juvenile herring), but a small market exists for human consumption (smoked sprat and whitebait). Sprat may be confused with juvenile herring, but the relative positions of dorsal and pelvic fins, the grey rather than blue coloration on the dorsal side and the sharply toothed keel on the belly are clear distinguishing features. Minimum Landing Size: None. Distribution Biogeographical distribution: Sprat is widely distributed in the shelf waters of Europe and North Africa, ranging from Morocco to Norway, including the Mediterranean, Black Sea and Baltic Sea [1,2], but stays largely within the 50 m depth contour and is also common in inshore waters. The foregone consumption of Gulf menhaden, after their many predator species were killed by oiling, increased competition among menhaden for food, resulting in poor physiological conditions and low lipid content during 2011 and 2012.
