Do Some Atlantic Bluefin Tuna Skip Spawning?

Secor1 SUMMARY During the spawning season for Atlantic bluefin tuna, some adults occur outside known spawning centers, suggesting either unknown spawning regions, or fundamental errors in our current understanding of bluefin tuna reproductive schedules. Based upon recent scientific perspectives, skipped spawning (delayed maturation and non-annual spawning) is possibly prevalent in moderately long-lived marine species like bluefin tuna. In principle, skipped spawning represents a trade-off between current and future reproduction. By foregoing reproduction, an individual can incur survival and growth benefits that accrue in deferred reproduction. Across a range of species, skipped reproduction was positively correlated with longevity, but for non-sturgeon species, adults spawned at intervals at least once every two years. A range of types of skipped spawning (constant, younger, older, event skipping; and delays in first maturation) was modeled for the western Atlantic bluefin tuna population to test for their effects on the egg-production-per-recruit biological reference point (stipulated at 20% and 40%). With the exception of extreme delays in maturation, skipped spawning had relatively small effect in depressing fishing mortality (F) threshold values. This was particularly true in comparison to scenarios of a juvenile fishery (ages 4-7), which substantially depressed threshold F values. Indeed, recent F estimates for 1990-2002 western Atlantic bluefin tuna stock assessments were in excess of threshold F values when juvenile size classes were exploited. Here we analyzed the annual cycle of body condition factor (K), gonadosomatic index (GSI) and maturity of sprat from the Skagerrak and Kattegat as well as from the Skagerrak inner fjords (Uddevalla fjords). The results show an inverse yearly pattern for K and GSI in both areas, K being the highest in autumn and lowest in spring, while the GSI index was highest in spring and lowest in autumn. The annual highest proportion of spawning fish was recorded from May to July, indicating the late spring and early summer as the main spawning period for sprat in these areas. Male sprat reached maturity at a higher size in the Uddevalla fjords compared to Skagerrak and Kattegat, while negligible differences were shown by females. The K, GSI and size-at-age were the lowest in the Uddevalla fjords, while K and GSI were the highest in the Skagerrak, potentially related to the different environmental conditions encountered in the different areas. -

The Resolution on the Rules governing the Landscape Award of the Council of Europe, adopted by the Committee of Ministers on 20 February 2008 at the 1018th meeting of the Ministers’ Deputies, draws attention to the fact that Article 11 of the Convention institutes the Landscape Award of the Council of Europe and that it is in keeping with the work carried out by the Council of Europe concerning human rights, democracy and sustainable development. It effectively promotes the territorial dimension of human rights and democracy by acknowledging the importance of measures taken to improve the landscape for people’s living conditions. Opened to the Parties to the Convention, the Award is intended to raise civil society’s awareness of the value of landscapes, of their role and of changes to them. Its objective is to reward exemplary practical initiatives aimed at successful landscape quality objectives on the territories of the Parties to the Convention. The Award is conferred every two years and the files presenting applications must reach the Secretariat General of the Council of Europe. -

Muskellunge: a Michigan Resource
Muskellunge: A Michigan Resource The muskellunge, or musky, is a tremendous game fish native to the lakes and streams of Michigan. The musky also is a fish of many myths regarding its’ appetite, size and elusiveness. The stories about muskies portray a fish feeding on anything that moves and can fit down their tooth-filled jaws…yet believed to be so difficult to catch that the musky is called “the fish of 10,000 casts.” Here, we briefly explore the mythical, legendary and genuine muskellunge. IDENTIFICATION Muskellunge are members of the esocid family of fish, which also includes the northern pike. This particular family of fish, technically called Esocidae, share similar characteristics such as long thin bodies and soft-rayed fins. These fish have large mouths full of sharp teeth. Muskellunge and pike are identified as piscivores, which means their primary diet is fish. Though similar in appearance, muskellunge tend to achieve larger sizes than northern pike. The musky’s coloration is one of dark stripes, or dark spots, on a light background. Northern pike, in contrast, usually have light, bean-shaped spots on a dark background. The shape of the tail fin is a good method of identification as a musky’s is pointed and the tail fin of a pike is rounded. Another key characteristic for identification is the presence or absence of scales on the cheeks and gill covers. Muskies only have scales on the upper half of the cheek and gill cover. Like the muskellunge, the northern pike gill cover has scales on the upper half, but the cheek is fully scaled. -

Timo Arula*, Heli Shpilev, Tiit Raid, Markus Vetemaa and Anu Albert Abstract Age of fsh at maturation depends on the species and environmental factors but, in general, investment in growth is prioritized until the frst sexual maturity, after which a considerable and increasing proportion of resources are used for reproduction. The present study summarizes for the frst the key elements of the maturation of European smelt (Osmerus eperlanus) young of the year (YoY) in the North-eastern Gulf of Riga (the Baltic Sea). Prior to the changes in climatic conditions and collapse of smelt fshery in the 1990s in the Gulf of Riga, smelt attained sexual maturity at the age of 3–4 years. We found a substantial share (22%) of YoY smelt with maturing gonads after the collapse of the smelt fsheries. Maturing individuals had a signifcantly higher weight, length and condition factor than immature YOY, indicating the importance of individual growth rates in the maturation process. The proportion of maturing YoY individuals increased with fsh size. We discuss the factors behind prioritizing reproduction overgrowth in early life and its implications for the smelt population dynamics.
