In Kenya, Christmas is a time for family togetherness. People often travel great distances to be home with their families. Homes and trees, sometimes including cypress trees, are decorated. Many Christians go to church to celebrate. After church, they go home and have a big Christmas party with family.

Some of the main ways the Irish celebrate Christmas is by spending time with family, giving gifts, and eating good food. Many towns decorate the streets using lights, trees, and various Christian symbols to celebrate the meaning of Christmas. Homes are decorated in much the same way, with some families also decorating with holly and ivy. Christmas ornaments aren’t only for the tree, however. Many homes display pretty ornaments around the house to help celebrate the season.

In Egypt, Christmas is generally celebrated on January 7, although some celebrate it on January 6. For those who celebrate Christmas as a religious holiday, there is a long fast before Christmas when certain foods cannot be eaten. During some of the time that Russia was part of the Soviet Union, Christmas was banned as a religious holiday, and people had to celebrate it in secret. Most people in Russia today celebrate Christmas on January 7. It is a quieter celebration than in many countries. Some people fast on Christmas Eve until the first star has been seen. Then, people often eat kutya, a sometimes served with honey, poppy seeds, fruit, and nuts. Other popular Christmas Eve foods are borsch, vegetable pie, and salads. Christmas Day foods are pork, goose, fruit pies, gingerbread, and cookies.

A traditional Christmas in Brazil is rabanada. It comes from the Portuguese who colonized Brazil hundreds of years ago. Rabanada is very similar to French toast. Day-old bread is dipped in eggs and fried. Then sugar and syrup are added.

Many things about Christmas in Brazil are much like Christmas in Western Europe and America. People decorate Christmas trees and spend a lot of time with family. One big difference between Brazil and America, though, is the weather. Because most of Brazil is south of the equator, Christmas comes in summer, not winter.

In England, roast turkey and vegetables is the most popular main course for Christmas dinner. Mince pies, Christmas pudding, and even Christmas cake are also often a part of the meal or served later in the day as part of the celebration.

Many areas are decorated with Christmas lights, and homes usually have Christmas trees. Christmas trees became especially popular in England in the mid-1800s when Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria, decided to use one to celebrate Christmas. Prince Albert was from Germany, where Christmas trees were popular, and he wanted to celebrate Christmas with one of his favorite customs.

German stollen is often thought to be one of the best Christmas pastries in the world. The most famous of the stollens from Germany has nuts and fruit. It is similar to fruitcake but is considered so much better. Other popular foods are roast goose, Christmas cookies, and gingerbread.

The modern Christmas tree was first used in Germany, and some of the most famous decorations from Germany are glass-blown ornaments. In the United States, these ornaments were imported and became very popular. In many places, gifts are exchanged on Christmas Eve rather than Christmas morning.

La Posadas is a major part of the Christmas celebration in Mexico. The procession is led by children on Christmas Eve. This is followed by a party where a piñata is broken, and there is food and dancing. There are often fireworks, bells, and whistles sounded. On Christmas Day, traditional Mexican foods are eaten.

In much of Mexico, children expect to receive gifts on Christmas Eve, but in some areas they expect their gifts on January 6. This is known as el Día de los Reyes. At this time, a special cake, called Rosca de Reyes, or Three Kings Cake, is eaten.
