description UNESCO system Pale di San Martino, San Lucano, Dolomiti Bellunesi, Vette Feltrine mountain group(s) Pale di San Martino UNESCO values Landscape: the landscape of the Rolle Pass is marked by the stark contrast between the western section, where the Lagorai porphyritic mountain chain with its powerful volcanic rocks ends, and the eastern side, home to the peaks of the Pale di San Martino with their clear sedimentary covering of dolomite rock. Here there are traces of the geological and geodynamic process which created the Pale di San Martino group. Baita Segantini stands on a large, undulating plain which gives a superb view of the most famous peaks in this enormous group: , Cima di Vezzana and Sass Maor. Geology: on the north-western slopes, just beyond the Pale di San Martino (Veneggia, Valles Pass, Rolle Pass) there are outcrops of rock that tell of the arrival of the first Dolomite sea, starting from the Athesian volcanic events and the gradual erosion of the ancient Hercynian mountains. This imposing system that includes the Pale di San Martino, together with some parts of the Coldai, Pelsa, Agner and Pale di San Lucano peaks, contains traces of a large Ladinian island whose original geometries are still intact (island-deep sea; island-volcanic material). The major deposits of volcanic origin are mainly concentrated in the western areas, while to the east rocks have been found that bear witness to the emergence of the Ladinian island, its surfaces marked by erosion and paleokarst formations. This irregular surface formed the bedrock for the subsequent coral islands of the Carnian period.

[source: https://www.dolomitiunesco.info/?lang=en] description of the route This splendid itinerary through the meadows at the foot of the Pale di San Martino is about 3 km long and runs along a forest road which connects the Rolle Pass (1959 m) with Baita Segantini (2179 m). From the car park at the Rolle ski tows (accessed from the Grappa and Rolle Pass main road SS50), follow the easy, flat forest road which winds its way through gentle rolling pastures. After about one and a half kilometres, you will come across the Capanna Cervino hut, the halfway point of the excursion, where you can stop, have a rest and get refreshments. Continue back along the forest road, whose conditions are always gentle and flat. After another kilometre and a half, you will get to Baita Segantini, at the foot of the majestic Cimon della Pala. If you continue for another 100 metres, you will get to a viewpoint offering a truly spectacular view over the rocky faces of the Pale di San Martino. advice recommended period Mid-June to end of September, when the baita is open. Info: https://www.baitasegantini.it/. recommended gear Wear comfortable clothes in layers. It is important to have sunscreen with you at all times, a change of clothes should it rain and a small first aid kit. recommended equipment The even, compact terrain and the gentle slopes make this route suitable for hiking pushchairs and push and electric wheelchairs, although we do recommend equipment with tyres with deep treads that can cope with the dirt track. When on your own, it is advisable to have means which are more practical on uneven terrain (electric wheelchair with a front wheel or off-road all-wheel drive). recommendations Always travel with others, so they can help you deal with any difficulties you may encounter. When following the itinerary in a wheelchair, on a mountain bike or with a pushchair, fit tyres with deep treads and always carry a complete tyre repair kit with a pump and spare inner tube. N.B. When using an electric wheelchair, it is a good idea to take some spare batteries. info altitude 2000 – 2500 m a.s.l. starting point car park at Rolle Pass - 38054 Siror, TN Altitude: 1959 m a.s.l.
