Konfereņcis organizacejis komitejis vuordā — Sanita Lazdiņa 4 Irina Bakhmutova (Europäische Universität in St. Petersburg) Das Plautdietsche der russlanddeutschen Aussiedler in Deutschland: die symbolische Rolle der Sprache im Kontext des Sprechergemeinschaftswandels Einleitung Plautdietsch, eine der ostniederdeutschen Mundarten, deren Ursprung im Ostseeraum liegt, gilt als die traditionelle Sprache der russland- deutschen Mennoniten und ist neben der Konfession das wichtigste Merkmal der Gruppenmitgliedschaft. Diese Mundart wurde von den Men- noniten im 17.–18. Jh. im Raum des Weichseldeltas als Umgangsprache übernommen und später in den Mennonitengemeinden Russlands und anderer Länder in der Innengruppenkommunikation aktiv gebraucht. Der folgende Beitrag ist einer bestimmten Gruppe der russlanddeutschen Mennoniten gewidmet, die in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts aus den mennonitischen Dörfern Westsibiriens nach Nordrhein-Westfalen (Deutschland) ausgewandert sind. An deren Beispiel wird analysiert, ob und wie sich die symbolische Funktion des Plautdietschen beim Wandel der Sprechergemeinschaft ändert. Unter dem Wandel der Sprechergemeinschaft werden 2 Prozesse ver- standen, die für die jeweilige Gruppe von besonderer Bedeutung sind. Der erste folgt aus dem Status ihrer Mitglieder als Spätaussiedler und ist die Anpassung ans neue soziale und sprachliche Milieu. Ein Aspekt dieses komplizierten und vielseitigen Prozesses scheint für die diskutierte Frage besonders interessant zu sein. Mit dem Auswandern seiner Sprecher nach Deutschland kommt Plautdietsch in Kontakt mit einer sprachlichen Umge- bung, die ihm nahe verwandt ist. Wie wird die Mundart in dieser neuen Situation von der Gemeinschaft wahrgenommen? Wird sie anders bewertet als zuvor im russischsprachigen Milieu? Der zweite Prozess, der den Wandel der jeweiligen Sprechergemeinschaft bestimmt, ist für die menno- nitischen Aussiedler in Deutschland nicht spezifisch und kann in den Mennonitengemeinden weltweit beobachtet werden1. Es geht um die Ver- selbstständigung der religiösen, sprachlichen und ethnischen Merkmale der Mennonitengemeinschaften (Stölting-Richert 1994: 188). 1 Der Situation der Spätaussiedler können allerdings bestimmte Besonderheiten eigen sein. 5 Der Beitrag gründet sich auf die Daten aus der Feldforschung in den mennonitischen Gemeinden Deutschlands (Nordrhein-Westfalen) und Russlands (Westsibirien, Omsker Gebiet), die von der Autorin 2008 und 2009 durchgeführt wurde. Die Hauptmethoden dieser Forschung waren — meine Beobachtung für das Sprachverhalten der Plautdietschen in verschiedenen kommunikativen Situationen, — halbstrukturierte Interviews, die Fragen nach dem früheren

I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract The main focus of this study is the High German language spoken by Russian Mennonites, one of the many groups of German-speaking immigrants in Canada. Although the primary language of most Russian Mennonites is a Low German variety called Plautdietsch, High German has been widely used in Russian Mennonite communities since the end of the eighteenth century and is perceived as one of their mother tongues. The primary objectives of the study are to investigate: 1) when, with whom, and for what purposes the major languages of Russian Mennonites were used by the members of the second and third migration waves (mid 1920s and 1940-50s respectively) and how the situation has changed today; 2) if there are any differences in spoken High German between representatives of the two groups and what these differences can be attributed to; 3) to what extent the High German of the subjects corresponds to the Standard High German. Holland Keith Johnson Thomas F. Shannon Spring 2016 1 Abstract This dissertation explores dialect diversification in the long-distance New World Plautdietsch speech community. Plautdietsch dialects are traditionally classified as belonging to one of two types: either Chortitza or Molotschna. The traditional dialect classification has recently come under scrutiny because speakers rarely use features exclusive to either type. I propose that variation in vowel production is an alternative way of classifying dialect affiliation. In this project, I analyze both the production of vowels and the production of traditional dialect features used by native Plautdietsch speakers living in North America. Hermine Penz Graz, 25.6.2018 2 Abstract Lingusitic change in Mennonite Sociolect: As the rate of lingusitic change and death accelerates, isolated languages become research gems as they allow linguists to determine factors that contribute to language maintenance. This study investigates lexical and phonological aspects of the Chortitza sociolect spoken by Mennonites in Aylmer, Ontario, Canada and Chihuahua, Mexico. The geographically seperate communities are compared. Word elicitation was used in order to determine any lexical variances between the two communities, and voice onset time and formant frequencies were measured and compared in order to determine phonological variances. Additionally, a matched-guise technique is employed as a means of determining perceived language prestige. The results show that there are very few variances between the two communities, and thus a high degree of language maintenance and resistance to change is indicated. Additionally, the results indicate that the global languages, Spanish and English, have a higher degree of overt prestige, whereas the sociolect has a higher covert prestige. The study shows that lingusitic change can indeed be resisted in isolated communities. When we do this, we construct sociolinguistic spaces in which we speak, live, work, read, and play. When migrants move from one place to another, they construct new migrant spaces that contain aspects of their former place of living as well as their new one. Language plays a crucial role, because it is through language that we speak about ourselves, through language we construct spaces, and through language we position ourselves within those spaces.
