  • The Indigenous Shôjo: Transmedia Representations of Ainu Femininity In
Journal of Anime and Manga Studies Volume 1 The Indigenous Shôjo: Transmedia Representations of Ainu Femininity in Japan’s Samurai Spirits, 1993–2019 Christina Spiker Volume 1, Pages 138-168 Abstract: Little scholarly attention has been given to the visual representations of the Ainu people in popular culture, even though media images have a significant role in forging stereotypes of indigeneity. This article investigates the role of representation in creating an accessible version of indigenous culture repackaged for Japanese audiences. Before the recent mainstream success of manga/anime Golden Kamuy (2014–), two female heroines from the arcade fighting game Samurai Spirits (Samurai supirittsu)— Nakoruru and her sister Rimururu—formed a dominant expression of Ainu identity in visual culture beginning in the mid-1990s. Working through the in-game representation of Nakoruru in addition to her larger mediation in the anime media mix, this article explores the tensions embodied in her character. While Nakoruru is framed as indigenous, her body is simultaneously represented in the visual language of the Japanese shôjo, or “young girl.” This duality to her fetishized image cannot be reconciled and is critical to creating a version of indigenous femininity that Japanese audiences could easily consume. This paper historicizes various representations of indigenous Otherness against the backdrop of Japanese racism and indigenous activism in the late 1990s and early 2000s by analyzing Nakoruru’s official representation in the game franchise, including her appearance in a 2001 OVA, alongside fan interpretations of these characters in self-published comics (dôjinshi) criticized by Ainu scholar Chupuchisekor. • Haruhi in Usa: a Case Study of a Japanese Anime in the United States
HARUHI IN USA: A CASE STUDY OF A JAPANESE ANIME IN THE UNITED STATES A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts by Ryotaro Mihara August 2009 © 2009 Ryotaro Mihara ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT Although it has been more than a decade since Japanese anime became a popular topic of conversation when discussing Japan, both within the United States and in other countries as well, few studies have empirically investigated how, and by whom, anime has been treated and consumed outside of Japan. This research thus tries to provide one possible answer to the following set of questions: What is the empirical transnationality of anime? How and by whom is anime made transnational? How is anime transnationally localized/consumed? In order to answer the questions, I investigated the trans-pacific licensing, localizing, and consuming process of the anime The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (Haruhi) from Japan to the United States by conducting fieldwork in the United States’ agencies which localized Haruhi as well as U.S. anime and Haruhi fans. The central focus of this research is the ethnography of agencies surrounding Haruhi in the United States and Japan. I assume that these agencies form a community with a distinctive culture and principles of behaviors and practices in the handling of the Haruhi anime texts. The research findings to the above questions could be briefly summarized as follows. The worldview, characters, and settings of Haruhi (i.e. a fictious world of Haruhi which is embodied and described through its anime episodes and other related products) “reduces” and “diffuses” as it is transferred on the official business track from the producers in Japan to the localizers in the United States (i.e.

  • The Otaku Lifestyle: Examining Soundtracks in the Anime Canon
THE OTAKU LIFESTYLE: EXAMINING SOUNDTRACKS IN THE ANIME CANON A THESIS IN Musicology Presented to the Faculty of the University of Missouri-Kansas City in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree MASTER OF MUSIC by MICHELLE JURKIEWICZ B.M., University of Central Missouri, 2014 Kansas City, Missouri 2019 © 2019 MICHELLE JURKIEWICZ ALL RIGHTS RESERVED THE OTAKU LIFESTYLE: EXAMINING SOUNDTRACKS IN THE ANIME CANON Michelle Jurkiewicz, Candidate for the Master of Music Degree University of Missouri-Kansas City, 2019 ABSTRACT Japanese animation, or anime, has been popular around the globe for the last sixty years. Anime has its own fan culture in the United States known as otaku, or the obsessive lifestyle surrounding manga and anime, which has resulted in American production companies creating their own “anime.” Japanese filmmakers do not regard anime simply as a cartoon, but instead realize it as genre of film, such as action or comedy. However, Japanese anime is not only dynamic and influential because of its storylines, characters, and themes, but also for its purposeful choices in music. Since the first anime Astro Boy and through films such as Akira, Japanese animation companies combine their history from the past century with modern or “westernized” music. Unlike cartoon films produced by Disney or Pixar, Japanese anime do not use music to mimic the actions on-screen; instead, music heightens and deepens the plot and emotions. This concept is practiced in live-action feature films, and although anime consists of hand-drawn and computer-generated cartoons, Japanese directors and animators create a “film” experience with their dramatic choice of music.

Samneang Peo VISUAL DEVELOPMENT OF A VISUAL NOVEL Visual Storytelling in an Interactive Game Bachelor’s thesis Degree programme in Design 2019 Author (authors) Degree Time Samneang Peo Bachelor of Culture March 2019 and Arts Thesis title 65 pages Visual Development of a Visual Novel 52 pages of appendices Visual Storytelling in an Interactive Game Commissioned by South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences (XAMK) Supervisor Brenda Jimenez Abstract The visual novel is an interactive video game genre that is based on heavy narrative style gameplay. Gameplay mainly involves the reading of a fictional story that is delivered through a text box, with static character sprites in the background. What separates visual novels from other game genres is an emphasis on storytelling. The objective of this thesis was to explore and research the visual development process in the production of a visual novel. It mainly focused on the fundamental visual elements that are used to deliver a story for this genre; this included the creation of character art, background art, user interface, necessary in-game assets, full-screen images and overall layout of the game. The thesis delved into the theories behind how these elements are used to tell a story within the genre. The product of this thesis is a game made in collaboration with two other game designers. The author of this thesis was responsible for the creation of all the artworks, while the others developed the gameplay, story and user-interface. The primary objective of the designers was to produce a game that is entertaining and immersive in its storytelling.
