On behalf of the New England Anime Society, our honored guests, and the entire Anime Boston staff, it is my honor and pleasure to welcome you to Anime Boston 2013! Last year, we partied hard and celebrated our tenth Anime Boston, and it was fabulous! As was reflected in our end-of-the world theme, we were tentatively planning for it to be our last. After all, wasn't the world supposed to end on 12/21/12? After waking up on the 22nd and realizing that the Earth was still turning, some of us panicked and started holiday shopping while some others among us started planning for the convention. I kid, I kid! (Mostly) none of us believed that there was any chance that the world was going to end, and if there was still a chance that Anime Boston 2013 would take place, then we planned to be ready. Some of you may not realize that we start planning the next year's event within weeks of Closing Ceremonies. It is a year-long effort to produce our three-day convention, and the ones who start the ball rolling are our hard-working elected staff and their assistants. Their names are listed in the back of this program guide, right before the autograph page. Flip back there right now and check it out. Don't worry, I'll still be here when you're done. Did you see it? Did you see the list of the executives, the directors, the managers, the assistants, and all the rest of the approximately 400 people who work to put on this show? Many of them will spend this weekend in blue, orange and red Anime Boston staff shirts, but many others will be wearing black so that they can work backstage, while some others dress up a bit more and work with our esteemed guests and industry friends. While our attire may vary, our goal is the same: to put on an amazing show for all of you. It takes 400 people, and a year's worth of time to put together this convention, and all of us volunteer our time and energy to the cause. That said, while you're enjoying the convention, hurrying from one amazing event to the next, please take a couple of extra seconds to thank some of the people who help to make Anime Boston a reality. You, our beloved horde, are the ones we ultimately do this for, and knowing that we're putting on a good show means the world to us. Cheer and Warm Regards, Andrea M. • The Formation of Temporary Communities in Anime Fandom: a Story of Bottom-Up Globalization ______
THE FORMATION OF TEMPORARY COMMUNITIES IN ANIME FANDOM: A STORY OF BOTTOM-UP GLOBALIZATION ____________________________________ A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of California State University, Fullerton ____________________________________ In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in Geography ____________________________________ By Cynthia R. Davis Thesis Committee Approval: Mark Drayse, Department of Geography & the Environment, Chair Jonathan Taylor, Department of Geography & the Environment Zia Salim, Department of Geography & the Environment Summer, 2017 ABSTRACT Japanese animation, commonly referred to as anime, has earned a strong foothold in the American entertainment industry over the last few decades. Anime is known by many to be a more mature option for animation fans since Western animation has typically been sanitized to be “kid-friendly.” This thesis explores how this came to be, by exploring the following questions: (1) What were the differences in the development and perception of the animation industries in Japan and the United States? (2) Why/how did people in the United States take such interest in anime? (3) What is the role of anime conventions within the anime fandom community, both historically and in the present? These questions were answered with a mix of historical research, mapping, and interviews that were conducted in 2015 at Anime Expo, North America’s largest anime convention. This thesis concludes that anime would not have succeeded as it has in the United States without the heavy involvement of domestic animation fans. Fans created networks, clubs, and conventions that allowed for the exchange of information on anime, before Japanese companies started to officially release anime titles for distribution in the United States.

Toaru Majutsu no Index / Toaru Kagaku no Railgun (A Certain Magical Index + A Certain Scientific Railgun) Jumpchain Version 0.1 By Kinunatzs The story is set in a world where supernatural powers exist through science, and magic exists through religion. Academy City, Japan, is at the forefront of science. Besides being thirty years ahead of the world technologically, more than three-fourths of this peculiar city's population consists of students developing their psychic abilities as Espers in various institutions. A city of not only scientifically advanced superhuman students, but in a world where magic is also real. The world where supernatural abilities are a reality. Individuals who possess special powers acquired via science are called Espers. Those Espers who gain their abilities without the aid of special scientific instruments, whether at birth, are referred to as Gemstones. Others, known as Magicians, gain their powers upon mastering the power of magic, either from obtaining knowledge from different mythologies or by using mystical artifacts, though the existence of magicians is a secret to the public. While Magicians align themselves with different beliefs, Espers are aligned with scientific institutions. This leads to a power struggle between the magic and science factions for control of the world. You would start one year before Year before the Index Arc begins and will be spending the next ten years trying to survive in this world. +1,000cp Age and Gender Roll 1d8+10 to determine your age and your gender is the same as it was previously, either of these may be changed for 50cp a piece.

If you were paying attention, you would have gathered that it’s a big fucking 3 place, but one thing I bet you didn’t know about the Hypersphere is that it is filled with fucked up freaks. There are normal people too, but they just aren’t as interesting as the freaks. Are you a freak, kid? Some sort of fucking Hypersphere psycho? What the fuck are you even doing here? Get the fuck out of my face you fucking deviant. So there I was, chilling out in the Hypersphere. I’d spent the vast majority of my life there, in fact. It did contain everything in my observable universe, so it was pretty hard to leave, honestly. At the time, I was stressing the fuck out about a fight I had gotten in earlier. I’d been shooting some hoops when some no-good shithouses had waltzed up to me and tried to make a scene.
