Although the photographs are artfully crafted and technically superior, there is the question of what an accretion of so many sublime landscape images of the North accomplishes in terms of perceptions of place, community and culture? It is true that creating awe-inspiring photographs that promote an appreciation for polar-regions is legitimate work. -

PINNGORTITALERIFFIK GREENLAND INSTITUTE OF NATURAL RESOURCES GRØNLANDS NATURINSTITUT Nuuk, August 2018 Assessment of lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus) in West Greenland based on commercial data 2010-2018 Rasmus Hedeholm and Søren Post Greenland Institute of Natural Resources Introduction The lumpfish fishery in Greenland is conducted in the spring along the Greenland west coast. The fishery peaks in late May/early June. Prior to year 2000, reported roe landings were below 500 t, but in the last decade landings have steadily increased, reaching the highest level in 2013 with 2 124 t (Fig. 1). Since then, catches have generally decreased, now being around 1 000 t. Before 2015 the fishery was unregulated, but in 2015 a management plan was implemented, that operates with TAC and restricted number of fishing days. The West Coast is divided into seven management areas, with the onset of the fishery being area de- pendent due to a timely displaced onset of spawning. The fishery is conducted from small open boats (<6.5m) that operates with gill nets that typically fish for 24 hours. Due to the large mesh size (260mm) the nets are highly selective, and catch predominantly female lumpfish, which are much larger than males (Hedeholm et al. 2013). Upon capture, the roe is removed from the fish, and stored in large barrels before landed at land based facilities. Hence, the number of fish landed is not reported, but only the total amount of roe. Due to the size of the fishing vessels, there is an upper limit to the number of nets each boat can carry. -

World Heritage Scanned Nomination File Name: 1149.pdf UNESCO Region: EUROPE AND NORTH AMERICA __________________________________________________________________________________________________ SITE NAME: Ilulissat Icefjord DATE OF INSCRIPTION: 7th July 2004 STATE PARTY: DENMARK CRITERIA: N (i) (iii) DECISION OF THE WORLD HERITAGE COMMITTEE: Excerpt from the Report of the 28th Session of the World Heritage Committee Criterion (i): The Ilulissat Icefjord is an outstanding example of a stage in the Earth’s history: the last ice age of the Quaternary Period. The ice-stream is one of the fastest (19m per day) and most active in the world. Its annual calving of over 35 cu. km of ice accounts for 10% of the production of all Greenland calf ice, more than any other glacier outside Antarctica. The glacier has been the object of scientific attention for 250 years and, along with its relative ease of accessibility, has significantly added to the understanding of ice-cap glaciology, climate change and related geomorphic processes. Criterion (iii): The combination of a huge ice sheet and a fast moving glacial ice-stream calving into a fjord covered by icebergs is a phenomenon only seen in Greenland and Antarctica. Ilulissat offers both scientists and visitors easy access for close view of the calving glacier front as it cascades down from the ice sheet and into the ice-choked fjord. The wild and highly scenic combination of rock, ice and sea, along with the dramatic sounds produced by the moving ice, combine to present a memorable natural spectacle. BRIEF DESCRIPTIONS Located on the west coast of Greenland, 250-km north of the Arctic Circle, Greenland’s Ilulissat Icefjord (40,240-ha) is the sea mouth of Sermeq Kujalleq, one of the few glaciers through which the Greenland ice cap reaches the sea. -

AMAZING DAYS IN ILULISSAT 5 days/4 nights Day 1: Arrival in Greenland, Ilulissat city walk & Icefiod sunset cruise A 3-hour flight from Reykjavik domestic airport (not Keflavik) to Ilulissat. Transfer to 4-star Hotel Arctic. After the welcome meeting with your local guide enjoy a guided city walk of Ilulissat, and afterwards, you have some time to explore the town, visit the local museum and observe Greenlandic life at the always busy harbour. Welcome dinner (2-course) is included at Hotel Arctic. Around 22:00, we depart for a sunset cruise to the famous Ilu- lissat Icefiord that is the world’s largest ice sculpture park. This draft final report was prepared in fulfilment of a contract to undertake genetic stock identification of Atlantic salmon captured at West Greenland for the period 2002-2012. The project sponsors were the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute for Northern Ireland (AFBINI), the International Atlantic Salmon Research Board (IASRB) of the North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organisation (NASCO) and the Atlantic Salmon Trust (AST). Contributors to the report were Philip McGinnity (UCC), Paulo Prödohl (QUB), Caroline Bradley (QUB), Tim Sheehan (NOAA), Barb Lubinski (USGS), Tim King (USGS) and Tom Cross (UCC). Background Previous physical tagging (Reddin et al. 2012) and genetic stock identification studies (Gauthier-Ouellet et al 2009; Sheehan et al. 2010) of Atlantic salmon at continental scale suggest that fish from North America and Europe, and European fish from the Northern and Southern Multi-Sea-Winter (MSW) population complexes, contribute to the Atlantic salmon catch off West Greenland. However, little is known of the proportions of fish originating from different European regions and individual rivers within these regions. European Atlantic salmon caught at West Greenland appear to be predominantly, non- maturing one-sea-winter fish. These are fish that mature after two or more winters at sea, and are commonly known as 1SW non-maturing or multi-sea-winter (MSW) maturing fish. -
