Dear Special Olympics Georgia Fans and Supporters:

The Special Olympics Athlete Oath states: “Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.” This motto is the backbone of our daily mission for children and adults with intellectual statewide. In 2008, Special Olympics Georgia (SOGA) hosted more athletes and coaches at State Games, providing quality competitions and facilities. The organization was steadfast and diligent in allowing our courageous athletes to showcase their bravery through sports training and competition around Georgia.

SOGA thanks the thousands of athletes and their family members, volunteers around Georgia, donors large and small, as well as schools, recreation depart- ments and other agencies who have embraced unity and acceptance of the special population that we love and serve. We had a very good 2008 in spread- ing awareness, involving younger athletes, educating more Georgians young and old, and strengthening overall partnerships with other advocacy groups.

As we launch into 2009, we continue to tell the amazing stories of our athletes, coaches and volunteers whom without there would be no SOGA. We are well on our way to another successful year even though the economic times will be more challenging than ever before in our 39 years. We appreciate and continue to need your support this year as we commit to the athletes more quality events that they can learn from, participate in and show their talents and potential on and off the field.

Thank you for being a fan of the athletes! They wouldn’t have the opportunities they have today without your generosity of time and donations.

Regards,

Georgia Milton-Sheats, Bill Huber, Chief Executive Officer Chairman, Board of Directors page 4 page 5 BE A FAN

Healthy Athletes Fun Fitness 101 Health Promotion 40 Hearing Screening 70 Opening Eyes 270 Special Smiles 405 Stories of Courage Tara Mims, SOGA Athlete Athlete Tara Mims is the power in powerlifting. She set the Kay Center record for female squat lifts at the Alabama State Powerlifting competition. Not only a trail blazer, she’s also developed more self-confidence, says her coach Todd Youngblood. “When I first met Tara, she was 19. With continuous work from staff and participation in Special Olympics, she began to mature into a young lady,” Youngblood explains. “She works hard toget better each day.” Mims is an athlete who has continued to grow and blossom each day, usually winning first or second place in Special Olympics competitions. Through all the hard work, she set an amazing personal best squat of 203 lbs. Weight lifting and morning exercise helped Tara learn the importance of being a healthy individual, which is one of the cornerstones of Special Olympics Georgia. Her list of competitions has now expanded to include alpine , bowling and attend- ing the Summer Games at Emory University in Atlanta. “Through Special Olympics, Tara has gained self-confidence and social skills that will carry her a long way in life,” Youngblood says. page 6 page 7 • Five of the six state games had an increase in athlete attendance. • FAN (Family Action Network) increased in membership from 55 members in 2007 to 62 members in 2008. • Thirty-seven families attended Family Camp, with 50 percent being brand new families to Special Olympics Georgia (SOGA). • SOGA received a $60,000 Project Unify grant through Special Olympics North America. • In the Young Athletes Program, 948 new young athletes and 16 new agencies registered. • SOGA sent 12 athletes, three coaches, one staff member and three families to the 2009 World Winter Games. • The number of athletes attending Coaches Clinics doubled in 2008. Volunteers, Development, Events • The number of volunteerslunteers at State Games increased by 19 percent from 2007. • A total of 3,329 volunteers were trained in a protective behaviors session. • The number of runners in the Race for Champions increased 30 percent from 2007. • The annual Art Auction grew by 64 percent from 2007. • SOGA partnered with Six Flags White Water for the first time to host the 2008 Duck Derby. • Thirty new law enforcement agencies joined the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) in 2008, making a total of 93 agencies involved in LETR, the highest ever. • SOGA held the first annual Cuffed for a Cause treadmill walk with 11 participating agencies raising $25,000.

page 8 BE A FAN & Stories Of Courage Pam Smith, SOGAOGA Coach In just a few minutes, you can quickly see how passionate coach Pam Smith is about her job. “It’s not whether the team wins or loses; it’s all about watching them do what they do. Just seeing them smile keeps me going,” Smith says. She believes that the most rewarding aspect of coaching is seeing how excited the athletes are about being a part of a team. Smith teaches in Rockdale County and enjoys seeing her students get excited over Special Olympics Georgia (SOGA) competitions. Having a heat press machine in the classroom, not only do the students design SOGA T-shirts, but they actually get to make the shirts. As Smith helps the students through the process, they feel pride through creating something special for SOGA, Smith said. When it comes to coaches, it would be hard to find one with a bigger heart than Smith’s. She has led her athletes to victory in softball, , bowling, and track and field. She says she has always had a love for sports and for kids, so she finds being a SOGA coach to be a perfect blend of the two.

Lee Brown, Unified Sports Partner Even after a devastating car accident, where Lee Brown had serious leg injuries, a broken arm, a bruised lung, and broken ribs, he still wouldn’t be gone from Special Olympics volunteering for long. Just after only one week, Brown was taken off the respirator and his first words were, “I guess I won’t be able to make the USA Volleyball Tournament this year.” He didn’t, but Brown hasn’t missed a beat since. He is a unified sports partner, an athlete who does not have an intellectual , and trains and competes with an athlete or on a team of athletes with intellectual disabilities. Dependable, flexible, knowledgeable, caring, and understanding are terms that colleague Todd Youngblood uses to describe Brown. Without unified partners, the unified sports program could not exist. Brown started out with the program as a bowling partner. Over the years, he has jumped on the bandwagon to assist with any and every sport. He has participated as a unified sports partner in volleyball, softball, basketball, and bowling. When he is not a partner, he volunteers as a coach for the softball and basketball teams. Very active in the program, Brown is always willing to take athletes to the grocery store, help out around their homes, and even take fishing trips with the athletes on occasion. Brown’s courage and dedication is certainly inspirational to everyone involved in Special Olympics and helps to keep the spirit of the organization strong.

page 9 How Your Donations Help BE A FAN • $12 pays for an athlete to attend a state event. • $25 helps a volunteer attend a multi-sport clinic to become a coach. • $85 covers the cost of a family to attend Family Camp for a weekend. • $165 provides an athlete the opportunity to attend Athlete Camp for a week. • $200 assists with transportation to a state game. Why We Need You • Even though 22,769 athletes and 5,430 unified sports partners are registered. We still need more students with and without disabilities earlier on. • Not every athlete has their family cheering for them away from home at State Games. Come and be a fan in the stands. • State activities are free to athletes. Donate to the program or sponsor an athlete at a state games. • At least 4,000 volunteer spots need to be filled in 2009, everything from escorting team members to serving refreshments. We guarantee you’ll receive a heart full of inspiration and want to learn more. • We need you to help us tell others about the courage of Special Olympics athletes. • The R-word is too commonplace in schools, at work and in the community. Instead, embrace a change of culture, , and helps us to stop the use of the R-word. Be a fan of unity.

Law Enforcement Torch Run: Detective Ed Christian, Assistant State Director of Law Enforcement Torch Run Serving others is a benefit all on its own. But for Detective Ed Christian, Special Olympics Georgia and serving as the Assistant State Director of the Law Enforcement Torch Run has brought his team closer together. In his job, he serves as the Immigration & Customs Enforcement liaison for the Kennesaw Police Department. While not out on the job, he and his colleagues dedicate their time to Special Olympics Georgia (SOGA) by helping to pull off thee largest annual fundraiser and putting on a few events of their own, such as golf tournaments and motorcycle rides. The Law Enforcement Torch Run serves as a tool to making the public aware of SOGA’s mission. Christian enjoys his involvement and his co-workers of the Kennesaw Police Department work at every Torch Run event they can. One of his fondest memories was assisting Immigration and Customs Enforcement in their first annual golf tournament in memory of Special Agent David Wilhelm, to benefit SOGA of course. As the Assistant State Director, Christian assists other law enforcement agencies in starting their own program and how to stay motivated. Last February, Christian coordinated a charity event called, “A Knight for Kids.” The event benefitted many organizations, with SOGA being the beneficiary of $10,000. For Christian, working with SOGA through the Torch Run has brought him great enthusiasm among his work team.

Christian believes, “The athletes are our biggest support, and we are theirs.” page 10 BE A FAN Statement of Activity For the Year Ended December 31, 2008 Support and revenue Support and Contributions $3,097,057 In-kind Contributions $352,960 Special Events $981,891 Other Income $266,857 Total Unrestricted Support and Revenue $2,651,152
