Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 2 ABSTRACT Certain recent studies of South Asian entrepreneurial acti­ vity have suggested that customary social and cultural const­ raints have prevented positive response to economic develop­ ment programmes. Constraints including the conservative mentality of the traditional merchant castes, over-attention to custom, ritual and status and the prevalence of the joint family in management structures have been regarded as the main inhibitors of rational economic behaviour, leading to the conclusion that externally-directed development pro­ grammes cannot be successful without changes in ideology and behaviour. A focus upon the indigenous concepts of the traditional merchant castes of a market town in Rajasthan and their role in organising business behaviour, suggests that the social and cultural factors inhibiting positivejto a presen­ ted economic opportunity, stimulated in part by external, public sector agencies, are conversely responsible for the dynamism of private enterprise which attracted the attention of the concerned authorities.

    Wealth Inequality, Class and Caste in India, 1951-2012 Nitin Kumar Bharti Masters Thesis Report Supervisor: Professor Thomas Piketty (PSE) Referee : Professor Abhijit Banerjee (MIT) June 28, 2018 Abstract This research makes two main contributions. First, I combine data from wealth surveys (NSS-AIDIS) and millionaire lists to produce wealth inequality series for India over the 1961-2012 period. I find a strong rise in wealth concentration in recent decades, in line with recent research using income data. E.g. the top 10% wealth share rose from 45% in year 1981 to 68% in 2012, while the top 1% share rose from 27% to 41%. Next, I gather information from censuses and surveys (NSS AIDIS and consumption, IHDS, NFHS) in order to explore the changing relationship between class and caste in India and the mechanisms behind rising inequality. Assortative mating appears to be very high in India, both at the caste level and at the education level (though not hugely larger than than in Western countries at the education level). I stress the limits of our knowledge and indicate possible lines of future research, particularly regarding the interplay between assortative mating and inequality dynamics. Does Untouchability still exist in India? These questions have been and continued to occupy a considerable space in political and socio-economic debates in India. In spite of more than six decades of welfare policies, and major political mobilization among lower castes in the state, our findings suggest huge Caste inequalities in terms of critical socioeconomic indicators such as Education, Consumption Poverty, Wealth and Landholding distribution where Hindu Dalits and Muslims Dalits are in disadvantageous position. The practices of Untouchability towards the Dalit Muslims by Upper Caste Muslims and Hindus are quite clearly evident in this survey. This study is first to identify Dalit Muslims and measure their socio-economic status vis-a-vis Hindu Dalits and other upper castes in Hindu and Muslim Religion in India. Judge1 Прегледни рад Guru Nanak Dev University UDK 235:316.342.3(540) Amritsar, India COMMUNITY WITHIN COMMUNITY: POLITICS OF EXCLUSION IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF SIKH IDENTITY Abstract The article examines the construction of religious identity among the Sikhs from the socio-historical perspective. It has been argued that the Sikh iden- tity was constructed as a result of the colonial intervention in which the emphasis turned to the appearance instead of faith as such. The new identity was a prod- uct of the politics of the times and it was perpetuated in order to maintain the hegemonic domination. Sikhism, despite its egalitarian ideology, failed to create a casteless community. Discrimination and exclusion of lower castes continued. An empirical investigation into the conditions and perceptions of the lowest caste, namely Mazhabi clearly demonstrated their exclusion, whereas discourse of equality among the Sikhs is used to create a moral community. Despite the equality of worship among the Sikhs, the Mazhabis at the local level are denied the equal religious rights in the gurdwaras (Sikh temple) owned and controlled by the upper dominant castes. Roots of the exclusion have to be located in the history of the making of the religious community and the way a few castes after benefiting from religious conversion perpetuated the caste-based exclusions.
