The spectacular citadel of Sigiriya rises sheer and impregnable out of the plains of the dry zone. It is the country’s most memorable single attraction, a remarkable archeological site made unforgettable by its dramatic setting. The rock was the innermost stronghold of a 70 hectare fortified town. It is the most impressive of Sri Lanka’s many cave temples. The complex of five caves with over 2000 sq. meters of painted walls and ceilings is the largest area of paintings found in the world. It contains over 150 images of the Buddha of which the largest is the colossal figure carved out of granite rock and spanning 14 meters. Make a stop at the spice garden at Matale. It is renowned for its collection of a variety of orchids. It includes more than 300 varieties of orchids, spices, medicinal plants and palm trees. Attached to it is the National Herbarium. The total area of the botanical garden is 147 acres (0.59 km2), at 460 meters above sea level, and with a 200-day annual rainfall. Lankathilake- The majestic temple is one of the most magnificent architectural achievements of the Gampola kingdom, and was built at the crest of a large rock which overlooks the Hantane mountain range. The history of the temple dates back to the 14th century, where several strong kingdoms ruled the land.     2. Introduction to Kurunegala Area : 2.1 Location and History : Kurunegala town is the capital of Kurunegala district as well as the capital of North Western Province (Fig 2.1). It has been administered by a Municipal council from as early as 1952 and is yet the only Municipality in the province. It is located at the 98 km post along the Ambepussa - Kurunegala - Trincomalee road in the North - East direction of Colombo. Total area of the district is 4,813 sq. km and this is the third biggest district in Sri Lanka. It is connected with middle hill (Kandy.Matale) in East and low land (Puttalam,Chilaw) of above 100 ft in West. The district is situated 100ft - 500ft above sea level. However to the East of the city it is 500ft - 1000ft. Climate in this district can be classified into three zones. Western and Northern part is in dry zone. Central area is with medium weather and southern zone is with wet weather. Kurunegala had the ancient kingdoms such as Yapahuwa and Panduwasnuwara. Kurunegala is located within the "Coconut Triangle" and most of the service activities related to the coconut plantation sector are located in this town. 2.2 Regional Aspects : Kurunegala is located in North - Western Province and is predominantly an agricultural area. Coconut and paddy are the major agricultural crops. It has access to Northern, Eastern, Central and Western provinces. It is surrounded by Puttalam, Anuradhapura, Matale, Kandy, Kegalle and Gampaha districts. It has a road network connected to many parts of the country.(Fig 2.2) They are, 1.

[email protected] ABSTRACT Sri Lanka, a Island situated at the southern tip of the Indian sub- continent processes a culture and tradition of over 2500 years. Therefore, the perception of colour in dress has been derived through inherited values, norms and customs, Thus, colour, dress and culture have been interwoven into the lives of the people of the Island.Fashion designing, the essential component that plays a vital role in the apparel industry at present, deserves a careful and comprehensive study. Creating new fashions is the key to product development in the industry. A new creation would not simply incubate unless it conforms to some underlying concepts.The objective of this research is to discuss cultural explanations for how people perceived colour and its affective meanings in dress. The selected study setting of the research is the Kandyan era of Sri Lanka (16th Century AD to 1815) where traditional perception of colour has changed with the influence of foreign cultures. The Kandyan era has continued with as living culture to the present day. The research was carried out by studying folklore, wall paintings, original dresses which depict the dress of the era, sketches of foreign diplomats, relevant to the subject. According to the cultural exploration on colour perception, it was found that people perceived colour in a common way although there were some differences in perception at individual level.
