Dr Stuart Davis, Girton College, Cambridge Reading beyond Cognitive Meaning: Affective Strategies in Novels of the Spanish “Memory Boom” The twenty-first century “memory boom” in Spain has resulted in a plethora of writing and fictions in which the civil war and the early years of Franco’s dictatorship feature prominently. Studies of these works have addressed representations of memory and trauma, recognizing how the authors reanimate the past and narrate stories of conflict and loss to a readership, distanced from the historical events. This essay explores four texts, identifying the strategies that have shaped their circulation in the current affective economy. Analysis pays particular attention to text, but also explores the image as formative in the reading experience. Durante el "boom de la memoria" del siglo XXI en España se han publicado una gran cantidad de libros y ficciones que han utilizado como fondo narrativo la guerra civil o los primeros años de la dictadura franquista. Los análisis de estas obras han abordado sus representaciones de las memorias y el trauma, reconociendo la tarea de los autores en recrear el pasado y en narrar a los lectores, lejanos de los acontecimientos históricos, historias del conflicto y de las pérdidas personales. Este trabajo examina cuatro textos, identificando las estrategias que han influido su circulación en una economía afectiva actual. El análisis presta atención al texto, pero también explora como la imagen informa la lectura de estas historias. During the recent “memory boom” of writing concerning the Spanish civil war and Francoist dictatorship many books have been sold and critical ink spilt as we examine the nature of the representation of the period, the recovery of memory and the ongoing need to engage with the trauma and repression of recent Spanish historical events. -

Print. 179 Pp. ──────────────────────────────── CARLOS AGUIRRE UNIVERSITY OF OREGON Mario Vargas Llosa, one of Latin America’s most important writers and intellectuals and the recipient of, among numerous other awards, the 2010 Nobel Prize in literature, is not only the author of an admirable corpus of novels, theater plays, and essays on literary criticism, but also somebody that has been at the center on countless political and literary controversies ever since he came into the literary and political spotlight in 1962 when he won the Biblioteca Breve award for his novel Time of the Hero at the age of twenty-six: the novel was received with great hostility in his home country, Peru, where prominent members of the military accused him of being a Communist and a traitor; in 1967, when he won the Rómulo Gallegos prize for his novel The Green House, he engaged in a dispute (at that time private) with Cuban officials such as Haydeé Santamaría who allegedly wanted him to make a fake donation of the cash prize to Che Guevara’s guerrilla movements; in 1971, he publicly and loudly denounced the Cuban government after the imprisonment and public recounting of Heberto Padilla and other writers accused of counter-revolutionary activities; in 1974, he criticized the confiscation of media in Peru by a military regime that he had hitherto supported and became the subject of a fierce polemic in his country; in 1976, he was -

China’s Fear of Contagion China’s Fear of M.E. Sarotte Contagion Tiananmen Square and the Power of the European Example For the leaders of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), erasing the memory of the June 4, 1989, Tiananmen Square massacre remains a full-time job. The party aggressively monitors and restricts media and internet commentary about the event. As Sinologist Jean-Philippe Béja has put it, during the last two decades it has not been possible “even so much as to mention the conjoined Chinese characters for 6 and 4” in web searches, so dissident postings refer instead to the imagi- nary date of May 35.1 Party censors make it “inconceivable for scholars to ac- cess Chinese archival sources” on Tiananmen, according to historian Chen Jian, and do not permit schoolchildren to study the topic; 1989 remains a “‘for- bidden zone’ in the press, scholarship, and classroom teaching.”2 The party still detains some of those who took part in the protest and does not allow oth- ers to leave the country.3 And every June 4, the CCP seeks to prevent any form of remembrance with detentions and a show of force by the pervasive Chinese security apparatus. The result, according to expert Perry Link, is that in to- M.E. THE POWER OF THE POWERLESS IN CHINA Panel Discussion Wednesday, September 26, 5 p.m. Since 2016, The Vaclav Havel Library Foundation recognizes writers who share Havel’s passionate commitment to human rights and have suffered unjust persecution for their beliefs. The award for a Courageous Writer at Risk is given each year to a writer of a distinguished work of fiction, literary nonfiction, biography/memoir, drama, or poetry, who is courageous in dissent and has been punished for challenging an oppressive regime. The winner of the 2018 Disturbing the Peace, Award for a Courageous Writer at Risk is Chinese author, reporter, musician and poet – Liao Yiwu (aka Lao Wei). As a vocal critic of China’s Communist regime, he spent four years in prison after publicly reciting his poem “Massacre” in memory of the victims of the Tiananmen Square military on June 4, 1989. He currently lives in Germany, under asylum but will be attending the award ceremony at The Bohemian National Hall in New York on September 27, 2018. In his books The Corpse Walker and God is Red, Liao Yiwu recounts the stunning life stories of ordinary men and women who live at the margins of Chinese society – Christian believers as well as oddballs and outcasts who have been battered by life and state repression yet who have managed to retain their irrepressible personality, invincible spirit, and innate human dignity. These stories raise the inevitable question that Vaclav Havel persistently posed as an underground playwright: Can a totalitarian state prevail against the human spirit it tries so hard to stifle? Liao Yiwu will be joined in this discussion by Liu Xia, an artist herself and the widow of Nobel Laureate and Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo; and by Professor Andrew Nathan, a leading China specialist and human rights advocate. -

Introduction The Haushofers And The Nazis Luise Haushofer’s Jail Journal follows on from Albrecht Haushofer’s Moabite Sonnets, a bilingual edition of which appeared in 2001 with an introduction about the Haushofers, Geopolitics and the Second World War. Luise (née Renner) was Albrecht’s sister-in-law. After Moabite Sonnets appeared, her daughter—Andrea Haushofer-Schröder, Albrecht’s niece—contacted me and gave me some documents which illustrate the family consequences of Albrecht’s resistance activities. One of these was that Luise served time in jail as the Gestapo suspected her of helping Albrecht to elude capture after the 20th July 1944—a phrase which is shorthand for the attempt to assassinate Hitler and establish an alternative Government that would attempt to negotiate an end to the Second World War, and re-establish democracy in Germany. Because of the Nazi policy of Sippenhaft— arresting the family of an accused—Albrecht landed the Renner as well as the Haushofer families in trouble with the Gestapo and caused some dispute and ill- feeling between the two. The documents Andrea gave me appear here in the original German and in English translation. They comprise a communication from Martha Haushofer to Anna Renner; another from Karl Haushofer to Paul Renner; a reply from Renner; and a surviving fragment of a Jail Journal written by Luise Haushofer in 1963. In addition, there are several illustrations from the Haushofer archive (provided by Andrea). Albrecht was summarily executed in the closing hours of the War for his part in the Resistance to the Hitler regime. He had been captured in December 1944 and kept on ice in the Berlin Moabite Prison by the Nazis, in case his English contacts would be useful in the event of a negotiated end to the war. -
