Draft: Golden Threads Copyright © Rossen, 2011 Tuesday, March 5, 2013 Golden Threads Preamble My Family in Greece John Augustus Toole Who can tell which Angel of Good Fortune must have smiled upon the young loyalist Irishman, John Augustus Toole, when he joined the British Navy as a midshipman and sailed out to the Mediterranean sometime in the first decade of the 19th Century? He was landed on the enchanted island of Zante where he met the great love of his life, the Contessina Barbara Querini. In this book I will tell the story of their love, the disapproval of Barbara’s family and how it came about that the young British officer prevailed. It was his good fortune and hers that resulted in my family on the Ionian Islands in Greece. My life, four generations later, was succoured in the cradle of luxury and privilege that he, his children and grandchildren had created. Before I tell you the story of my remarkable life on these islands, a story resonant with living memory and fondness for the people who touched my life, I will describe in this preamble the times, places and people who came before me: the tales told to me as a child. Most of Greece was part of the Ottoman Empire at the time of John Augustus Toole’s arrival. The seven Ionian Islands, located on the west coast of Greece, had escaped Ottoman occupation as part of the Venetian Empire. In 1796 Venice fell to the French under Napoléon Bonaparte. In 1809, British forces liberated the island of Zante and soon after Cephalonia, Kythria and Lefkada.

VIRGINIANUS, IN THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE INDEX-CATALOGUE OF MEDICAL AND VETERINARY ZOOLOGY SPECIAL PUBLICATION NO. 1 CHECKLIST OF THE INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL PARASITES OF DEER, ODOCOILEUS HEMIONOS AND O. VIRGIN I ANUS, IN THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA By MARTHA L. WALKER, Zoologist and WILLARD W. BECKLUND, Zoologist National Animal Parasite Laboratory VETERINARY SCIENCES RESEARCH DIVISION AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH SERVICE Issued September 1970 U. S. Government Printing Office Washington : 1970 The protozoan, helminth, and arthropod parasites of deer, Odocoileus hemionus and O. virginianus, of the continental United States and Canada are named in a checklist with information categorized by scientific name, deer host, geographic distribution by State or Province, and authority for each record. Sources of information are the files of the Index-Catalogue of Medical and Veterinary Zoology, the National Parasite Collection, and pub- lished papers. Three hundred and fifty-two references are cited. Seventy- nine genera of parasites have been reported from North American deer, of which 73 have been assigned one or more specific names representing 137 species (10 protozoans, 6 trematodes, 11 cestodes, 51 nematodes, and 59 arthropods). Sixty-one of these species are also known to occur as parasites of domestic sheep and 54 as parasites of cattle. The 71 parasites that the authors have examined from deer are marked with an asterisk. This paper is designed as a working tool for wildlife and animal disease workers to quickly find references pertinent to a particular parasite species, its deer hosts, and its geographic distribution.

Deposit Guide Contact: email 1 Concert and Disconcertion : the music of relationality in the cinema of Claire Denis Geoffrey Brown Thesis submitted for the degree of PhD in French 2019 Department of European Cultures and Languages Birkbeck, University of London 2 Declaration I declare that the work presented in this thesis is my own, and that this thesis is the one on which I expect to be examined. Geoffrey Brown 3 This thesis is dedicated to Agnès Calatayud, an inspirational teacher, who reconnected me to French cinema after a long carence, and who, crucially, first introduced me to the films of Claire Denis. 4 Abstract This thesis argues that the interest which the films of Claire Denis display in the ever-shifting modes of relations between people is illustrated through analysis of how music is used throughout her corpus of feature films. Denis draws on an extremely eclectic palette of musical styles, and the thesis proposes that these varying musical modalities are central to her treatment of relational issues, as are the ways in which she deploys her chosen musical selections.

Painted by J. May Fraser in I929 from old photographs KOAMVALU 1865 OF KOAifALU Q-H, Story of RPioneers on and of [fh a t They B uilt in Is/and Garden Kaua i Tha t By Ethel M'' Damon Volume 1 Privately Printed Honolulu 1931 Having worked Itself out Through the Soil of its Native Garden This Story of Koamalu Is now laid at that Garden Gate By One from Without In the Hope that it may bring Something of Beauty or Truth or Both To a Certain Child of that Island And to any other Child born Within the Ocean-cut Circle Of that Enchanted Island Garden. -a -e,, 367 7 P,. ~PREFACE Intended primarily as a permanent setting for many of the family letters and much of the family history, this true story of the island home at Koamalu has come to include not a little from the growth of neighboring communities, together with attendant developments in trade and the tilling of the soil. Almost unconsciously, something in the nature of an epic of the island has thus gradually taken shape. To members of the several families our narrative conveys an affectionate regard, linked with a deep interest in the unfolding of the family trees in all their roots and branches. To the friends, who in many varied ways have furthered the telling of the tale, its completed form carries our most grateful appreciation. To the general reader it is offered with the assurance that a deal of human nature, interwoven with more than a few threads of romance, lies folded away not only between, but also within, the lines of history itself.

  • Towards Integrating Antiracism Into Teaching English As a Second Language Training Programs in Ontario
Towards Integrating Antiracism into Teaching English as a Second Language Training Programs in Ontario by Dulani Suraweera A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Ontario Institute for Studies in Education University of Toronto © Copyright by Dulani Suraweera 2020 Towards Integrating Antiracism into Teaching English as a Second Language Training Programs in Ontario Dulani Suraweera Doctor of Philosophy Department of Adult Education and Community Development, Ontario Institute for Studies in Education University of Toronto 2020 Abstract The adult English language education sector in Canada has gained momentum as a revenue-generating service ostensibly designed for new immigrants and international students. However, ESL teaching approaches and theories reproduce unequal power structures underpinned by settler-colonial mindsets that devalue and marginalize non-White and non-native speakers in the ESL/TESL sector. In this study, I argued that current ESL curricula, assessment, and classroom management procedures do not adopt antiracist pedagogies even though many ESL learner and ESL/TESL teacher populations in Canada are racially diverse. Although ample research looks at how ESL curricula and teaching and hiring practices exclude and devalue ESL learners and non-native speaker ESL teachers in Canada, not many critical studies have explored TESL training programs in the Canadian context. The twofold purpose of this study was therefore to: (a) investigate how three TESL Ontario accredited programs address race, racism, and antiracist praxis in their TESL curricula; and (b) explore how the experiences of TESL Ontario accredited ESL/TESL practitioners may inform the development of an antiracist TESL curriculum that addresses race and racism more effectively, explicitly, and practically.
