Reviewed by David Eyman (History Department, Skidmore College) Published on H-CivWar (April, 1996) The last chapter of Hauptman's book opens with a description of a scene from the 1976 motion picture, The Outlaw Josey Wales, in which Chief Dan George, playing the part of a Cherokee Indian named Lone Watie, explains what it meant to be a "civilized" Indian. Every time he appealed to the government for relief from problems visited on him as an Indian, he was told to "endeavor to persevere." When he eventually grew tired of hearing that, he joined up with the Confederacy. Hauptman goes on to suggest that Native Americans from a variety of tribes joined in a fight that was not really theirs for many reasons. Indian participation in the American Civil War, on both sides, was more extensive than most people realize, involving some 20,000 American Indians. Laurence Hauptman, a professor of history at the State University of New York at New Paltz and the author of a number of works on American Indians, has provided an interesting examination of Indians who participated in the Civil War. By following the service of selected tribes and individuals, he recounts a number of stories, ranging from such relatively well-known personalities as Stand Watie-- the principal chief of the southern-allied branch of the Cherokee Nation and brigadier general of the Confederate States of America--and Ely Samuel Parker--a Seneca and reigning chief of the Six Nations and a colonel on General Ulysses S. -

WALKER ABSTRACT The eighty-six years from 1860-1945 was a momentous one in American Indian history. During this period, the United States fully settled the western portion of the continent. As time went on, the United States ceased its wars against Indian tribes and began to deal with them as potential parts of American society. Within the military, this can be seen in the gradual change in Indian roles from mostly ad hoc forces of scouts and home guards to regular soldiers whose recruitment was as much a part of the United States’ war plans as that of any other group. -

Young Portrait Explorers: Sequoyah
Young Portrait Explorers: Sequoyah Learning Objective: Learn about Sequoyah (c. 1770 – 1843), creator of the Cherokee syllabary (symbols used like an alphabet), and practice your writing skills. Portrait Discussion: Look at the portrait of Sequoyah. Spend 30 seconds letting your eyes wander from the top of the painting to the bottom. Objects: Notice the objects in this portrait. Can you spot the following: a feather pen, an inkwell (small jar used to hold ink for writing), a pipe, a medal, and something with writing on it? What clues might these objects provide about Sequoyah’s life? Can you read it the writing Sequoyah presents? Some of the symbols might look familiar, but not all. This is the Cherokee syllabary – the symbols Sequoyah created to form a written version of the Cherokee language. Each symbol represents a sound or syllable. Just like the letters in an alphabet, the symbols can be combined to form words. The Cherokee Nation (a North American Indian people or community) has a rich tradition of storytelling but did not use a written language until the 1800s, when Sequoyah introduced his syllabary. Soon after, Cherokee history, traditions, and laws were put down in writing. Pose: Do you think Sequoyah is sitting or standing? Can you try posing like he does? Pay attention to what he is doing with his hands – they help us to understand his story. With one hand, he holds the syllabary. With the other hand, he points at it. We might expect Sequoyah to be reading, but notice how his eyes look out from the painting. -

Treadway and Buffington Family INTRODUCTION The material on pages one through thirteen of this collection of records was furnished by Mr. John Frank Treadaway of Madison. Georgia, who died in 1950, because of a breakdown in health. Mr. Treadaway was forced to discontinue his genealogical research which, as will be observed, he confined to his forebear, the Revolutionary Soldier. Daniel Treadaway, of South Carolina, from whom most of the Treadaways in the South descend. Knowing that Mr. Treadaway was desirous of sharing his records. I am including them along with my own and those of others. After reading Mr. Francis Marion Treadaway's brief history (beginning on page 5) of the Daniel Treadaway family, one cannot help being impressed with his apparent determination to give only the facts, and if in doubt he would say "if I have been correctly informed", etc. Therefore. I fully accept his statement as being true that Richard Treadaway, of Orangeburg District. S. C.,(nor Barnwell County), father of Daniel, the Rev. Sol., did immigrate, with his family from New Jersey to South Carolina although as yet no proof of this has been established. In view of the above. I decided it would be advisable to include in my collection the Treadway records as found in the N. J. Archives in conjunction with those furnished by Miss Helen Hall of Omaha. Nebraska, on her Henry Treadway of New Jersey. Also. Tread(a)way records from others are likewise included. Permission by these contributors to use such records is greatly appreciated. One can readily see that this work represents considerable research, and it is hoped this collection of both Treadaway and Buffington family records will prove helpful to many people interested in these families.
