Comité des Constructeurs Français d’Automobiles Comité des Constructeurs Français d’Automobiles Comité des Constructeurs Français d’Automobiles (CCFA) is the French automobile manufacturers’ trade association. It has seven members: Alpine, Automobiles Citroën, Heuliez, Panhard & Levassor, Automobiles Peugeot, Renault and Renault Trucks. Its mission is to study and defend the business and industrial interests—excluding labor issues— of all French automobile manufacturers at both the national and international levels. CCFA’s activities encompass information, analysis and communication for its members as well as for government agencies, public officials, the media and the general public. Other sectors of the automotive industry—parts and equipment manufacturers, dealers, body manufacturers, etc.—have their own trade associations (FIEV, CNPA, Fédération des Industries Mécaniques, Fédération de la Plasturgie, etc.). Foreign manufacturers are represented by their own association (CSIAM). CCFA is associated with the Brussels-based ACEA, the European Automobile Manufacturers Association. Cross-Country Comparison of Substitution Patterns in the European Car Market

Leuven, Belgium Supervisor: Frank Verboven. Discussant: Patrick Van Cayseele Candidate: Victoria Oliinik January 2007 Abstract AIMS. Using recent data on sales, prices and product characteris- tics of new passenger vehicles sold in Europe’s seven largest markets during years 2000 through 2005, I estimate a demand function us- ing two approaches to the differentiated product demand estimation: the Logit and the Nested Logit. For the Nested Logit model, I use nests that roughly correspond to segmentation used in the automo- bile industry. I then compare substitution patterns resulting from Logit and Nested Logit specifications across countries and segments. FINDINGS. Regression outcomes demonstrate strong evidence of seg- mentation. Consumer preferences are strongly correlated for the most basic as well as for the luxury and sports segments, whereas core seg- ments display more heterogeneity. While car size preference varies across countries, Europeans typically like high and wide cars and dis- like long cars. Engine performance appreciation appears to have a curved shape: consumers are willing to pay for a fast car but at a de- creasing rate. Compared to their neighbors, Germans shop the most for premium brands yet display strongest price sensitivity, whereas most concerned about fuel consumption are the Brits. Aside from a few exceptions, all elasticities are within expected range, substitu- tion patterns vary mainly across segments but follow a similar pattern across countries. -

Since its launch in 1999, the groundbreaking Peugeot 206 has become a benchmark for style and engineering. With over 2 million drivers worldwide, the 206 is setting new standards for a great variety of consumers. The world is probably witnessing the birth of the next cult car. PEUI_0111094 Advert. 206 ING 26/11/01 11:41 Page 2 Probably the most attractive car in its category. The 206 is increasingly viewed as the benchmark against which the other cars in its segment must be measured. One reason is that the 206 has always boasted the most attractive design in its category. With its huge windshield and extensive glass area, feline headlights, gently curving rear end and the outstanding ergonomics of its interior design, the car soon convinced the motoring press and won over consumers. But the 206’s appeal goes far beyond its styling. The car’s design and technology put it at the top of a category that it is reshaping. Re-defining the category Through its spaciousness and ergonomics, the 206 pushes the envelope of the small car segment, challenging previous standards of comfort and liveability. Its interior dimensions and thoughtful innova- tions make the 206 a comfortable car in both the front and the back. For example, elevated back seats give tall passengers knee room and the roof height provides space that suggests a people carrier. All these innovations combine to create a big, comfortable car that still fits the small car category. -

ECONOMICAL CRISIS AND BUSINESS STRATEGIES: FASA-RENAULT IN SPAIN DURING THE SEVENTIES Tomàs Fernández-de-Sevilla Universitat de Barcelona Very preliminary version. Please do not quote. 1. Introduction FASA-Renault became the leader in sales in the Spanish car market through the seventies. It also became the leading car manufacturer in Spain. The Spanish car market contracted in five years during the period 1970-80, and its growth was above 10% only in two years. In contrast, FASA-Renault’s sales increased along the whole period, and they even grew at a rate above 15% in 6 of these years. In addition, production increase was even higher than that of sales. FASA-Renault found in exports a solution to the Spanish market limitations. The objective of this article is to show those factors that allowed FASA-Renault to success during the oil crisis that strongly affected the Spanish industry. 2. Background of the automotive industry in Spain (1953-1972) The Spanish automotive industry started in the middle of the twentieth century when SEAT and FASA companies were founded. Both companies manufactured rebadged cars models under the license of foreign companies. SEAT manufactured rebadged FIAT cars and FASA, rebadged Renault cars. In 1953, both companies launched their first vehicles. In that year, a total amount of 2.052 cars were manufactured in Spain. The country was ranked eighteenth in the car manufacturing countries ranking. However, twenty years later it was placed in the tenth position, with a yearly output of 632,585 vehicles. In 1973, along with SEAT and FASA, operated Citroën-Hispania, Chrysler-España (Barreiros) and AUTHI.
