Created as a cultural analogue to genetics, memetics has developed into a cultural theory and, as the concept of memes is increasingly applied to online behaviours and activities, its relevance to the area of media studies materialises. The landscapes of media production and spectatorship are in constant fluctuation in response to rapid technological progress. The internet provides global citizens with unprecedented access to media texts (and their producers), information, and other individuals and collectives who share similar knowledge and interests. The unprecedented speed with (and extent to) which information and media content spread among individuals and communities warrants the consideration of a modern analytical paradigm that can accommodate and keep up with developments. Hughes All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT “American Monsters: Tabloid Media and the Satanic Panic, 1970-2000,” analyzes an episode of national hysteria that dominated the media throughout most of the 1980s. Its origins, however, go back much farther and its consequences for the media would extend into subsequent decades. Rooted in the decade’s increasingly influential conservative political ideology, the satanic panic involved hundreds of accusations that devil-worshipping pedophiles were operating America’s white middle-class suburban daycare centers. Communities around the country became embroiled in criminal trials against center owners, the most publicized of which was the McMartin Preschool trial in Manhattan Beach, California. The longest and most expensive trial in the nation’s history, the McMartin case is an important focal point of this project. In the 1990s, judges overturned the life sentences of defendants in most major cases, and several prominent journalists and lawyers condemned the phenomenon as a witch-hunt. They accurately understood it to be a powerful delusion, or what contemporary cultural theorist Jean Baudrillard termed a “hyperreality,” in which audiences confuse the media universe for real life. Presented mainly through tabloid television, or “infotainment,” and integral to its development, influence, and success, the panic was a manifestation of the hyperreal.

Motz, Advisor This research examines the popularity of Barbie among young adult Japanese women as the “Barbie phenomenon” in Japan. By investigating the historical and cultural aspects of Japanese values of beauty, the author found that the phenomenon emerged from the combination of the values of kawaii (Japanese cuteness) and kakkoii (Japanese coolness). Kawaii is the traditional positive feeling for small and delicate things, and in modern society its meaning extends into popular characters and fashion. Kawaii fashion is usually considered to use lace, ribbon, and frilly materials and colors of pink, white, and pastels. On the other hand, the English- language word “cool” is usually translated into kakkoii (かっこいい), which means that people’s appearance is attractive, and its meaning also extends into people’s behavior and fashion in modern society. Kakkoii behavior is masculine and independent; the colors of black, blue, and khaki and plain materials are usually used in kakkoii fashion. In fact, “Kakkoii” is different from American “cool,” which is a word used for not only an attractive appearance but also individuality and a sense of belonging; however, the words “kakkoii” and “cool” are used without regard for such a difference in Japan.
