It is for this reason that I dedicate the project to them. v Deregulation, Integration and a New Era of Media Conglomerates: The Case of Fox, 1985-1995 Publication No._____________ Alisa Hayley Perren, Ph.D. The University of Texas at Austin, 2004 Supervisor: Thomas Schatz In 1985, the film and television industries began a decade-long process of realignment. In this dissertation, I show how News Corp., primarily via its subsidiary, the Fox network, played a central role in redefining the relationship between motion picture studios and television distributors from 1985 to 1995. I analyze how the company successfully launched and expanded Fox Broadcasting by cultivating productive relationships with a variety of different stakeholders including advertisers, the creative community, independent television stations, regulators, cable operators, cable program services, and the press. This study uses trade publications and mainstream press reports to chronicle and analyze a period that has been understudied by scholars. Through the use of these resources, I describe the specific regulatory, economic and vi technological conditions enabling the emergence of a fourth network. This discussion is followed by an analysis of how Fox further shaped these conditions while also introducing a number of significant programming, marketing and distribution innovations to broadcasting. Through Fox’s heightened emphasis on targeting specific demographics, its aggressive pursuit of a brand identity and its development of niche-oriented television programming, the company redefined network television along with the larger media landscape. Indeed, Fox, along with parent company News Corp., initiated a new era for media conglomerates.     ABSTRACT A CASE STUDY OF CROSS-OWNERSHIP WAIVERS: FRAMING NEWSPAPER COVERAGE OF RUPERT MURDOCH’S REQUESTS TO KEEP THE NEW YORK POST by Rachel L. Seeman Media ownership is an important regulatory issue that is enforced by the Federal Communications Commission. The FCC, Congress, court and public interest groups share varying viewpoints concerning what the ownership limits should be and whether companies should be granted a waiver to be excused from the rules. News Corporation is one media firm that has a history of seeking these waivers, particularly for the New York Post and television stations in same community. This study conducted a qualitative framing analysis of news articles from the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal to determine if the viewpoints expressed by the editorial boards were reflected in reports on News Corp.’s attempt to receive cross-ownership waivers. The analysis uncovered ten frames the newspapers used to assist in reporting the events and found that 80% of these frames did parallel the positions the paper’s editorial boards took concerning ownership waivers. WATCH DAWSON’S CREEK: TEENAGERS’ PERCEPTIONS OF TEENAGE LIFE ON DAWSON’S CREEK by AMANDA STEWART HALL (Under the Direction of MARIA CAROLINA ACOSTA-ALZURU) ABSTRACT Drawing on cultural studies, especially Hall’s theory of encoding and decoding of texts (1973), this study examines how a sample of the audience of Dawson’s Creek, a Warner Brothers’ Television show, interpret and relate to the show and whether they incorporate these meanings in their lives. Ten in-depth interviews were conducted with females aged 15- to 21-years-old to discern the reality of representations on the show of teenage life and how these participants engage with the show. Findings suggest the show enables its viewers to identify with the portrayal of the teenage experience, especially when examining the show’s characters. Limitations of the study include the diversity of the sample used. Future research suggestions include an examination of how the show’s messages are encoded by the show’s creative team. In addition, future research should include a more in-depth examination into how Dawson’s Creek has changed the nature of teenage television.
