ПЕТАР Б. БОГУНОВИЋ УДК 94(497.11) Нови Сад Оригиналан научни рад Република Србија Примљен: 21.01.2018 Одобрен: 23.02.2018 Страна: 577-600 GENS VLACHORUM IN HISTORIA SERBORUMQUE SLAVORUM (Vlachs in the History of the Serbs and Slavs) Part 1 Summary: This article deals with the issue of the term Vlach, that is, its genesis, dis- persion through history and geographical distribution. Also, the article tries to throw a little more light on this notion, through a multidisciplinary view on the part of the population that has been named Vlachs in the past or present. The goal is to create an image of what they really are, and what they have never been, through a specific chronological historical overview of data related to the Vlachs. Thus, it allows the reader to understand, through the facts presented here, the misconceptions that are related to this term in the historiographic literature. Key words: Vlachs, Morlachs, Serbs, Slavs, Wallachia, Moldavia, Romanian Orthodox Church The terms »Vlach«1, or later, »Morlach«2, does not represent the nationality, that is, they have never represented it throughout the history, because both of this terms exclusively refer to the members of Serbian nation, in the Serbian ethnic area. –––––––––––– [email protected] 1 Serbian (Cyrillic script): влах. »Now in answer to all these frivolous assertions, it is sufficient to observe, that our Morlacchi are called Vlassi, that is, noble or potent, for the same reason that the body of the nation is called Slavi, which means glorious; that the word Vlah has nothing

This chaotic situation was combined with the arbitrary and repressive conduct of local Ottoman feudal lords. Migrations, interethnic contacts and mixing of populations as well as an intensified Islamization process caused by a number of factors greatly complicated the situation. Albanian northward penetration along the Lim and into Pešter as well as the expan- sion of the Vasojevići tribe into the Upper Lim valley added to the complexity of the ethnic and demographic picture of the region. Perpetual rebellions against the Otto- man occupation eventually led to the liberation of the Serbian Orthodox population of these areas. Keywords: Stara Raška (Old Rascia), Brda (Highlands), Old Herzegovina, Ottoman Empire, rebellions, migrations Introduction or the sake of clarity let us first define some terms used in this article.

This work is made available under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 Abstract: In the research of origin, genetic genealogy allows us to go to the earliest of our ancestors. However, the results of DNA analysis alone are not enough to establish and explain the relationships among the individuals. For more precise conclusions, it is necessary to be examined what has been recorded in the historical sources and literature. The Society of Serbian Genealogists “Poreklo” (“Origin”), which started Serbian DNA project in 2012, several years later also started work on forming special Digital Library for genealogical research. From that time, project grew covering many geographical regions of Western Balkans and ever-increasing Y-DNA database. Digital library also grew and now contains more than 3.800 titles of genealogical character, covering many regions of Western Balkan and even territories tied to historical migration routes out of this region.

Jelica Stojanović THE DEVELOPMENT PATH OF THE SERBIAN LANGUAGE AND SCRIPT Podgorica 2020 MILOš KOVAčEVIć THE DEVELOPMENT PATH OF THE SERBIAN LANGUAGE AND SCRIPT, MADE UP OF STRAY PATHS Only two years have passed from the two hundredth anni- versary of the beginning of Vuk Karadžić’s struggle for “intro- ducing the folk language in literature”, that is to say, from the introduction of the Serbian folk language in the Serbian literary language, or to put it in the more modern phrasing of today: the standard language. The beginning of that struggle is connected to the year 1814, when, in the royal city of Vienna, Vuk’s first grammar book came out: The Orthography of the Serbian Lan- guage Based on the Speech of the Common Folk, which dealt with resolving the three most important standard-related issues: a) the issue of the Serbian orthography, b) the issue of the morpho- logical structure of the Serbian language, and c) the issue of the name of the language and its national boundaries. Rare are the languages, if, indeed, there are any, which have had such a turbulent history of two hundred years. The histor- ical development of a language can be followed at two histor- ical levels: that of its internal and that of its external history.

1 TABLE OF CONTENTS Meet See Do Conference Programme 8 The fourth Balkan Conference Venue Map 12 Museum Network’s annual conference About the Programme 13 About Facilitators 26 13-15 April 2016 List of Participants 48 2 Welcome letter from the Secretariat of the Balkan Museum Network Welcome to the Balkan Museum Network’s annual conference ‘Meet, See, Do’, the place of sharing, learning and supporting! We are truly grateful that all of you are here at the conference, as your contributions are the most valuable part of the ‘Meet, See, Do’. Three keynote speeches, sixteen workshops, a talk show, a presentation of case studies, an open microphone session and other fun and interesting activities will ask questions surrounding four major themes: interpretation and communication, access and inclusion, the social role of museums and how to work with digital technologies. Prominent international experts and museum professionals will inspire us, often asking difficult questions on this kaleidoscope of issues. We are very thankful to the Historical Museum of Shkodra, ARKA Youth Centre, the British Council and all the individuals that made this conference possible! Enjoy ‘Meet, See, Do’ as a fantastic opportunity for the professional development that is made possible with the support of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation through Cultural Heritage without Borders (CHwB).
