Tihewa Mauriora! To say that Term 1 has been busy would be an extreme understatement! We have been involved in a wide range of mahi across all three pou Kia Māori, Kia Mātau, Kia Tū Rangatira ai. This mahi is important to establish a strong culture and build whanaungatanga in the Kura. Our ākonga, both at Paenuku and Paerangi, have excelled in everything that has been asked of them and have been a credit to themselves, our Kura and their whānau. Below, I have attempted to capture the events and activity we have been involved in so far this year. Paenuku A very significant event for us was the opening of Paenuku, our primary school, in February. We began with 40 ākonga and gained 4 more over the course of the Term. We are extremely proud of what the pouako and whānau of Paenuku have achieved in their first Term of existence and the way in which they have supported and participated in the life of Te Kāpehu Whetū. Paenuku Powhiri Kia Māori Our year started with the annual Hikoi. This year we decided to head to Te Hiku O te Ika and were hosted by Ngati Kuri, Te Rarawa and Te Kura Kaupapa Maori O Aniwaniwa. This was followed by our Leaders Retreat at Waitangi for our Kura Leaders. We were involved with a number of events that required us to give Kapa Haka performances including the debut of Paenuku at the Ngāti Hine Festival. Our Paerangi ākonga also performed at this Festival as well as an outstanding bracket at the Te Tai Tokerau Festival in Opononi. We also supported local mana whenua and the Mayor of Whangārei Sheryl Mai at the Pasefika Fusion Festival at Hihiaua. - Te Āhuareka o Ngāti Hine - Pasefika Fusion Festival - Te Tai Tokerau Festival A group of ākonga attended the opening day of the Hokianga Waitangi Tribunal Hearings at Tuhirangi Marae in Waima where they participated in the haka pōwhiri and supported the taumata with waiata tautoko. We hosted, on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, a group of Ambassadors and Diplomats from over 30 countries as part of their Treaty of Waitangi commerations. We also hosted a group of Hawaiian educators who are connected with the Hokulea project to circumnavigate the globe and raise awareness of environmental issues. Level 1 Level 2 Level 3 UE Te Kāpehu Whetū 100% 85.7% 100% 50% We continue to use local external providers to support our teaching and learning and we currently have ākonga studying with other learning institutions such as Te Wānanga o Aotearoa and the Cut Above Academy in Auckland. Toi tū te kupu, toi tū te mana, toi tū te whenua” Kia Tū Rangatira ai The Leadership Academy of A Company has successfully integrated into the Kura and with the support of Academy staff we have been able to bring some of the Academy culture and practice into the daily and weekly operation of the Kura, in Paerangi and Paenuku. The Leadership Academy will provide the leadership stream in our kura for our young men. The Academy again took up their roles of responsibilty for the Field of Rememberance but this year, the commemoration of 100 years since Gallipoli, were joined by ākonga from Te Kāpehu Whetū Paerangi and Paenuku. Another important kaupapa the Academy, supported by Te Kāpehu Whetū, was involved with at the end of Term 1 was the launch of the Esther Muriwai Foundation with the Governor General Sir Jerry Mataparae as the Patron. Our cadets and taitamawāhine were involved in the haka pōwhiri, guard of honour and supporting the taumata with waiata tautoko at Pehiaweri Marae. In addition, we have had a very successful Term in the various sports we have participated in. We had a boys and a girls Volleyball team competing at the Northland Secondary Competition, our waka ama crews competing at the National Secondary Competition and a number of ākonga who competed at the Northland Secondary Athletics Competition, including Waimahana Henare winning regional shot put and representing Northland at Nationals. Kyneval Mokaraka represented our kura at the NSSA outdoor lawn bowls coming TE KĀPEHU WHETŪ PAERANGI | 185 LOWER DENT ST, WHANGAREI | PH: 09 4384 228| WWW.MOKONZ.CO.NZ placing 1st in the Intermediate Boys Bowls Championship. We also had ākonga represent Northland at the National Touch Tournament. Last of all, the Trust purchased a Waka Tētē that seats 22, from Matua Hekenukumai Busby and we will be launching it up in Doubtless Bay on ANZAC Day (more information on that next week). Matua Hec put his hand on us and named our Kura and now we have a symbol of that relationship with him, The Waka Fratenity and The Pacific. The Waka will be utilised for waka training in the inner harbour by Paerangi and seniors from Paenuku. It introduces waka back into Whangarei, allowing us to regain some of the cultural knowledge around waka and to and grow this area of our culture. Overall it has been a very, very busy but rewarding start to the year, the focus will now shift onto Kia Mātau (Be Educated) for Terms 2 & 3 but we will continue to promote and create opportunities in Kia Māori and Kia Tū Rangatira ai.
