Band (Dritte Folge • Achtundfünfzigster Band) 2006 VERLAG HERDER FREIBURG Das „Freiburger Diözesan-Archiv" erscheint jährlich einmal Der Umfang beträgt zur Zeit 25 bis 35 Bogen, enthält Abhandlungen und Quellenpublikationen, die Geschichte und Kunstgeschichte der Erzdiözese Freiburg und der angrenzenden Diözesen betreffend, und bringt auch Abhand- lungen aus dem Gebiet der heimatlichen Kunstgeschichte. Alle für dieses Organ bestimmten Beiträge und darauf bezüglichen Anfragen sowie die zur Besprechung bestimmten Bücher, Zeitschriften und Ausschnitte aus Zeitungen sind zu richten an Herrn Universitätsprofessor Dr. Hugo Ott, 79249 Merzhausen, v.-Schnewlin-Straße 5, Telefon (07 61) 40 23 36, Telefax (07 61) 4 56 77 46. Das Manuskript darf nur auf einer Seite beschrieben sein, muss sich auch in stilistisch druckfertigem Zustand befinden und längstens bis 1. Januar dem Schriftleiter vorgelegt werden, wenn es in dem Band des betreffenden Jahres Berücksichtigung finden soll. Das Honorar für die Mitarbeiter beträgt für den Bogen: a) der Darstellungen 50 Euro; b) der Quellenpublikationen 30 Euro. Jeder Mitarbeiter erhält 20 Sonderabzüge kostenfrei; weitere Sonderabzüge, welche bei Rücksendung des ersten Korrekturbogens bei der Druckerei zu be- stellen sind, werden gegen Berechnung geliefert. Jeder Teil eines Druckbogens und der Umschlag werden als voller Bogen berechnet. Die Vereine und Institute, mit denen der Kirchengeschichtliche Verein für das Erzbistum Freiburg im Schriftenaustausch steht, werden ersucht, die Empfangs- bestätigung der Zusendung sowie die für den Austausch bestimmten Vereins- schriften an die Bibliothek des Kirchengeschichtlichen Vereins im Kirchenge- schichtlichen Seminar der Universität Freiburg im Breisgau, 79085 Freiburg i.Br., Werthmannplatz 3, zu senden. Anmeldungen zum Eintritt in den Verein sind an die Geschäftsstelle Erzb. Ordinariat Freiburg, Herrenstraße 35, zu richten. Der Jahresbeitrag beträgt für die Pfarreien als Pflichtmitglieder 18,— Euro, für die Privatmitglieder 16,— Euro. Dafür erhalten die Mitglieder den jährlich erscheinenden Jahresband vom „Freiburger Diözesan-Archiv" portofrei zugesandt. Nach Anordnung des Erzb. Ordinariats vom 14. Dezember 1934 ist die Mitgliedschaft für alle Pfarreien Pflicht (vgl. Amtsblatt der Erzdiözese Freiburg Nr. 32/1934, Seite 299/300). Aus Gründen der Verwaltungsvereinfachung werden die Mitgliedsbeiträge der Pfar- reien für den Kirchengeschichtlichen Verein nach dem Erlass des Erzb. Ordina- riats vom 25. Juni 2001 Nr. IV-23293 ab dem Jahre 2002 nicht mehr einzeln er- hoben, sondern von der Diözese an den Kirchengeschichtlichen Verein überwiesen. Dies verweist auf folgende Ge- schichte: Als Konrad bei der Feier der heiligen Messe am Ostertag den Kelch ab- deckte und das Blut Christi trinken wollte, sah er, dass eine giftige Spinne in den Kelch gefallen war. „Mit festem Glauben trank er den Kelch aus, überzeugt da- von, dass das Gift ihm nicht schaden werde. Die Umstehenden befiel Trauer und Furcht. Doch Konrad setzte sich nach dem Gottesdienst mit den übrigen zum Mahl. Et reclinato super mensam capite, exitum araneae aperto praebet ore, quae nec mori in homine Dei, nec mortem potuit inferre. Tum quanta convivarum exultatio, quanta de viri constantia suboritur admiratio, lector potius animo con- cipiat, quam exprimendum verbis exigat" („Und nachdem er sein Haupt auf den Tisch geneigt, gewährte er mit offenem Munde der Spinne den Ausgang, die im Manne Gottes weder hatte sterben, noch den Tod bringen können. Wie groß dar- auf der Jubel der Speisenden war, welche Bewunderung der Standhaftigkeit des Mannes sich erhob, möge der Leser lieber selbst im Geist erfassen, als in Worten ausgedrückt verlangen". 1 ) Dieses sogenannte Spinnenwunder ist in der ältesten Überlieferung der Lebensbeschreibung von 1190 2 noch nicht enthalten und taucht erstmals in der Handschrift der Vita in der württembergischen Landesbi- bliothek von 1456 auf, 3 fand aber wohl schon seit dem 13. Jahrhundert allmäh- lich Eingang in die Konradsvita; auch in der Legenda aurea des Jacobus de Vor- agine wird sie immerhin schon in einer Handschrift des 14. Jahrhunderts erwähnt.4 Auch die Abbildungen zeigen Konrad am Anfang ohne Kelch und Spinne, nur als Bischof mit den Insignien seines Amts — so etwa in einem Kup- 'Vita prior auctore Oudalscalcho, MG SS IV S. 430-436, hier: S. 433 f. Aus der gleichen Zeit stammt eine schmucklose Abbildung in einem Martyrologium, das in einer Sammelhandschrift aus Kloster Zwiefalten, heute in der württem- bergischen Landesbibliothek, 7 überliefert ist . Es enthält zu jedem Monat Abbil- dungen der einschlägigen Heiligenfeste. Auf der Seite für den November taucht immerhin schon mit der Beschriftung „s(anctus) Cvonradus" der Bischof am Rand auf. Und im Welfenstammbaum aus dem späten 12. Jahrhundert ist er ebenfalls abgebildet — mit den Insignien seines Amts und mit Nimbus. 8 Aber erst nach der Mitte des 15. Jahrhunderts erscheint er schließlich mit Kelch und Spin- ne.9 Eines der ältesten Zeugnisse ist wohl das Reliefbild eines niederschwäbi- schen Altarflügels im württembergischen Landesmuseum aus der Zeit um 1480.10 Mit diesem Befund ist ein Kernproblem jeder hagiographischen Untersu- chung angesprochen. By illustrating biblical contents, they provide a specific interpretation of a particular passage, clarifying and disambiguating images even where the Scripture is vague or obscure. First of all, this is due to the nature of the texts in the Old and New Testaments, since it is indeed rare that the descriptions of events and persons are vivid enough for a painter to derive precise instructions regarding artistic composition from them. Pictures, however, are subject to the necessity of putting something in concrete form; therefore, they require legitimization and are part of orthodoxy, whatever it may be.1 Since the time of the Reformation at the very latest, pictures have been used as a means of religious canonization to give expression to orthodoxy, but also to denounce the respective opposing side, of course. But whatever their function in religious practice may have been, as a rule they represented instruments of disambiguation. Luther, in particular, valued pictures as a pedagogical tool and took a critical stance against the iconoclasts.2 For him, their essential purpose was to teach, simply and clearly.3 In the following remarks, I would like to explore the reverse case and present pictures as agents of subversion. For the interpreter this poses a task that does not involve certainty, but ambiguity or equivocality. For in this context, semantic ambivalence is not in any way an expression of a modern concept of art in the sense of Umberto Eco's Open Work; rather, it is due to the fact that a heterodox meaning is being hidden in the pictures.

Gabrielli All rights reserved 2014 iii ABSTRACT SOLIDARITY MEDIATION IN THE FRENCH STREAM OF MYSTICAL BODY OF CHRIST THEOLOGY Name: Gabrielli, Timothy R. University of Dayton Advisor: William L. Portier, Ph.D. In its analysis of mystical body of Christ theology in the twentieth century, this dissertation identifies three major streams of mystical body theology operative in the early part of the century: the Roman, the German-Romantic, and the French-Social- Liturgical. Delineating these three streams of mystical body theology sheds light on the diversity of scholarly positions concerning the heritage of mystical body theology, on its mid twentieth-century recession, as well as on Pope Pius XII’s 1943 encyclical, Mystici Corporis Christi, which enshrined “mystical body of Christ” in Catholic magisterial teaching. Further, it links the work of Virgil Michel and Louis-Marie Chauvet, two scholars remote from each other on several fronts, in the long, winding French stream.

Closely associated with Catholic-Orthodox rapprochement in the latter half of the 20 th century was the emergence of the expression “sister churches” used in various ways across the confessional division. Patriarch Athenagoras first employed it in this context in a letter in 1962 to Cardinal Bea of the Vatican Secretariat for the Promotion of Christian Unity, and soon it had become standard currency in the bilateral dialogue. Yet today the expression is rarely invoked by Catholic or Orthodox officials in their ecclesial communications. As the Polish Catholic theologian Waclaw Hryniewicz was led to say in 2002, “This term…has now fallen into disgrace.” This dissertation traces the rise and fall of the expression “sister churches” in modern Catholic-Orthodox relations and argues for its rehabilitation as a means by which both Catholic West and Orthodox East may avoid certain ecclesiological imbalances toward which each respectively tends in its separation from the other. Catholics who oppose saying that the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church are sisters, or that the church of Rome is one among several patriarchal sister churches, generally fear that if either of those things were true, the unicity of the Church would be compromised and the Roman primacy rendered ineffective.

By illustrating biblical sub­ jects, they provide a specific interpretation of selected passages, clarifying and disambiguating by means of images, even where Scripture is vague or obscure. This is due first of all to the nature of the texts in the Old and New Testaments: one rarely encounters descriptions of persons and events vivid enough to function as precise templates for pictorial compo­ sitions. Pictures, on the other hand, are subject to the necessity of putting something in concrete form; as such, they require legitimization and are potentially instruments of codification.1 During the Reformation pictures were used to canonize religious view­ points and to give expression to various orthodoxies, but also to denounce the heterodoxy of the opposing side. But whatever their function in reli­ gious practice may have been, as a rule they operated as vehicles of dis­ ambiguation.
