No single religious denomination was in control or had an absolute majority in the student population. Arguably, it was the first in the British Empire to achieve such a state of affairs, which begs how such circumstances come about. What political machinations supported this outcome and what was the sectarian intrigue behind the move to have a public university not dominated by any one religion? This article explores the early years of the University, the debates that led to its creation in 1850, and in the decade that followed, how the churches came gradually to accommodate themselves to an institution not founded on religious principles. In 1849, as the New South Wales Government was considering ways toward self-government it was also debating the merits of a publicly endowed colonial university. Led by William Charles Wentworth, by then a conservative squatter-politician and Australian patriot, the legislative council considered a university scheme that would make it a ‘duty of the State … to provide for the instruction of the people …’.1 The words were carefully chosen. Although there was only ever the intention to have a small proportion of the population of New South Wales university-educated—to create, in effect, a governing elite—the university’s supporters believed that the ‘people’ would benefit by having their brightest educated to a standard that would equip them to serve the public, and that the benefits would flow to the colony as a whole. This vision of a public university revealed a belief in the capacity of meritocracy as a way to select suitable male colonists on the basis of academic merit, whatever their social or religious origins. Yet there was an additional feature that soon came to define the public institution. Basic to * Julia Horne is associate professor in the department of History at the University of Sydney. The university was not to be dominated, he argued, by any church, or serve its needs through religious instruction. Charles Nicholson, future university provost and donor of an antiquities collection that became the basis for the University’s Nicholson Museum, was open to the idea of involvement by the major religious denominations, but he too was adamant that the curriculum be secular. The University of Sydney, founded in 1850, inherited a past that linked higher education and religious belief. It has often been assumed that its foundation broke with this tradition because of public declarations to be secular. Australian historian and, later, university Vice-Chancellor JJ Auchmuty wrote in the 1950s that secularism had triumphed in Australia, where the universities ‘are, without exception, firmly organised on a purely secular and non-sectarian basis’.2 Other scholars have since pointed out the significance of affiliated denominational residential colleges at Australian universities.3 In effect, the university emerged with a secular curriculum but only after debate about the historical basis of religion at the centre of a university. What emerged was a public secular university containing collegiate forms of the churches. In the early nineteenth century, most established universities in Europe still had formal associations with Christianity arising out of their foundation by church and religious bodies. In England, the ‘ancient universities’ of Oxford and Cambridge in the early nineteenth century could have been seen as the Church of England at study. After all, the Church of England was the established church of the nation and Oxbridge college fellows were among its ordained clergy. Even as late as 1840, about half the undergraduates at Oxford were preparing to enter the church. Religious tests were not completely abandoned at Oxford and Cambridge until the 1870s. Before the publication of Charles Darwin’s theory of natural selection in 1859, few in universities had questioned the tenets of Christianity. In Britain it had not so much been belief or unbelief but matters of denominational faith that caused controversy, particularly in the efforts of the Established Church to maintain its privileged position. Increasingly, after Darwin, establishing state-endowed secular educational institutions seemed the appropriate path. This became accepted not just

    1 ‘Inter Mirifica’ after 40 Years Franz-Josef Eilers, svd The Decree on Social Communication of Vatican II Inter Mirifica received the biggest number of “no” votes in the final voting for any council document. This was probably due to the fact that the text was heavily criticized by communications people and some council fathers even tried a campaign at the entrance to Saint Peter’s Basilica to stop it. The original proposal for the document had 114 paragraphs which were reduced to a skeleton of now 24 paragraphs only, with some basic considerations. I. After 40 years, Inter Mirifica appears in several ways different from those days. Despite its history, the document now looks rather like the starting “shot” for more professional considerations. The Pastoral instruction, Communio et Progressio, is still considered the best document on church and social communication even beyond the Catholic Church. The bishops rightly felt that they were not fully competent for a professional document which later was confirmed by the short three-day council discussions (23-27 Nov 1962) on the text. Most Episcopal interventions of those days reflect a very rudimentary background on social communication, to say the least. Communio et Progressio, on the other hand, went through different stages of reconstruction and rewriting even in different languages in the course of seven years till it finally was published. Without the happenings around Inter Mirifica and a special mandate for the pastoral instruction (IM 23), Communio et Progressio would not exist. But it has not lasted so long without changing and adapting to the times. One of the greatest examples of the Catholic Church’s adaptation to the modernization of society is through the Second Vatican Council, held from 11 October 1962 to 8 December 1965. In this gathering of church leaders, the Catholic Church attempted to shift into a new paradigm while still remaining orthodox in faith. It sought to bring the Church, along with the faithful, fully into the twentieth century while looking forward into the twenty-first. Out of the two billion Christians in the world, nearly half of those are Catholic.1 But, Vatican II affected not only the Catholic Church, but Christianity as a whole through the principles of ecumenism and unity. There are many reasons the council was called, both in terms of internal, Catholic needs and also in aiming to promote ecumenism among non-Catholics. There was also an unprecedented event that occurred in the vein of ecumenical beginnings: the invitation of preeminent non-Catholic theologians and leaders to observe the council proceedings.     A CHRISTIAN UNDERSTANDING OF HOMOSEXUALITY Introduction Over the past 45 years, our society has undergone a revolution – there is really no other way to describe it – in the prevailing cultural attitudes towards homosexuality and various related ‘alternative’ sexualities, an entire range of behaviors now collectively referred to by the acronym LGBTQ – Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (this last term being a catch-all for identities and behaviors that do not fit into any of the preceding categories). Most of the contemporary population has come of age during this revolution. Older readers will remember a time when if such things were even mentioned, it was usually in the form of a tasteless joke, or in the context of an insult. Indeed, the behaviors associated with homosexuality were once criminally punishable in almost every jurisdiction – federal, state, and local – in the United States, and similarly abroad. To be ‘outed’ credibly as someone who engaged in homosexual behavior usually meant that one’s reputation and career were ruined. Active homosexuals stayed carefully closeted, as they could become targets of blackmail or worse. Today, not only does our society broadly tolerate homosexual behavior, it is legally recognized and given protected status. The US Supreme Court’s Obergefell decision in June of 2015 made the United States the 22nd country to officially recognize same-sex marriage. Homosexual characters are everywhere in television and films, and the attention of social progressives is moving towards the mainstreaming of ever more exotic sexual identities. Young people are growing up in an environment where casual acceptance of homosexuality and bisexuality is increasingly seen as the norm, and where dissenters from the new orthodoxy are regarded with contempt, not only as ignorant and unenlightened, but as positively evil.

According to sources he led an adventurous life, and spent time in out of the way colonial outposts. He composed music seemingly of substance, and for ensembles normally associated with higher class music, yet despite this, we have only one work surviving by this active musician and prolific composer. Much of his life and professional activity has been thoroughly explored in Graeme Skinner’s important thesis on early Australian composition.1 More is found in his website of Australian composers, and the accompanying chronology of Australian composition.2 Both sources are important documents.3 The birth date of Joseph Gautrot is unknown, but there are various mentions of his early life and career in an obituary in Bell’s Life of 4 February 1854.4 In the obituary he was cited as being a member of Napoleon’s Imperial Guard, probably as a musician, and was present during the Russian Campaign of 1812.

After several years of research I am still ambivalent towards him. I feel, however, this ambivalence is due to the paradoxes inherent in his personality rather than to any deficiency in my research. I have tried to show in this thesis the complexity of his character that these paradoxes caused. Bishop Quinn died in 1881, but the foundations of his work in Queensland were laid by 1875. To appreciate the shape of the Church that soared grandly from these foundations, to understand the conflict and the turmoil that surrounded the man and his creation, the bishop must be first seen in his original environment, Ireland and Rome.

Angesichts der oenkundigen Gren- zen der Neuscholastik, die sich im Laufe des 19. Jahrhunderts als das Modell durchgesetzt hatte, suchte er schon früh nach einer Alternative. Bei aller Skep- sis gegenüber dem herrschenden Thomismus schätzte er Thomas von Aquin in hohem Maß. Das betraf insbesondere dessen Bemühen, die damals aktuellen wissenschaftlichen und methodischen Erkenntnisse einzubeziehen. Lonergan wollte dies ebenso tun. Es ging ihm darum, der katholischen Theologie eine neue Richtung zu geben, also von der Neuscholastik abzurücken. Denn diese berücksichtigte weder das erkennende Subjekt noch das zu erkennende Objekt hinreichend. It was his intent to provide theology with new foundations that led him to incorporate contem- porary methods of science and scholarship into theological practice. Faith, as he thought, should be made intelligible to the times.1 Thus, Lonergan moved beyond the borders set up by Neo-Scholasticism.
