A Christian Understanding of Homosexuality
A CHRISTIAN UNDERSTANDING OF HOMOSEXUALITY Introduction Over the past 45 years, our society has undergone a revolution – there is really no other way to describe it – in the prevailing cultural attitudes towards homosexuality and various related ‘alternative’ sexualities, an entire range of behaviors now collectively referred to by the acronym LGBTQ – Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (this last term being a catch-all for identities and behaviors that do not fit into any of the preceding categories). Most of the contemporary population has come of age during this revolution. Older readers will remember a time when if such things were even mentioned, it was usually in the form of a tasteless joke, or in the context of an insult. Indeed, the behaviors associated with homosexuality were once criminally punishable in almost every jurisdiction – federal, state, and local – in the United States, and similarly abroad. To be ‘outed’ credibly as someone who engaged in homosexual behavior usually meant that one’s reputation and career were ruined. Active homosexuals stayed carefully closeted, as they could become targets of blackmail or worse. Today, not only does our society broadly tolerate homosexual behavior, it is legally recognized and given protected status. The US Supreme Court’s Obergefell decision in June of 2015 made the United States the 22nd country to officially recognize same-sex marriage. Homosexual characters are everywhere in television and films, and the attention of social progressives is moving towards the mainstreaming of ever more exotic sexual identities. Young people are growing up in an environment where casual acceptance of homosexuality and bisexuality is increasingly seen as the norm, and where dissenters from the new orthodoxy are regarded with contempt, not only as ignorant and unenlightened, but as positively evil. -

OVERVIEW OF THE PROBLEM In 1984, the Roman Catholic Church began to experience the complex and highly embarrassing problem of clergy sexual miscon- duct in the United States. Within months of the first public case emerging in Lafayette, Louisiana, it was clear that this problem was not geographically isolated, nor a minuscule exception.' In- stances of clergy sexual misconduct surfaced with increasing noto- riety. Bishops, the leaders of the United States Catholic dioceses, were caught off guard. They were unsure of how to deal with spe- cific cases, and appeared defensive when trying to control an ex- panding and uncontrollable problem. -
Canon Law on Child Sexual Abuse Through the Ages
CANON LAW ON CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE THROUGH THE AGES Kieran Tapsell1 In 2014 two senior members of the Marist and Christian Brothers in Australia told Justice McLellan, the Chair of the Child Sexual Abuse Royal Commission that in the 1980s the brothers would not have regarded touching a student’s genitals as a crime but only a “moral failure”.2 McLellan asked Br Shanahan. Q. Can you explain how the Orders would have brought themselves intellectually to that position, describing it only as a moral failure and not a criminal offence? How would they have arrived at that position? 3 A. No, I can't explain it. This paper is an attempt to explain it: how bishops, priests and religious all over the world came to regard the sexual abuse of children, not as crimes punishable by the State, but as moral failures that should be dealt with by treatment, and by dismissal from the priesthood or religious life only as a last resort.4 The explanation lies in a gradual but radical change of culture within the Catholic Church that took place in the latter part of the 19th century that can be traced through changes in canon law. The Concepts of “Canon Law” and “Child Sexual Abuse” The title of this paper, Canon Law on Sexual Abuse through the Ages, is in some senses anachronistic. This mandatory secrecy policy, imposed on threat of excommunication, bound Bishops and Dioceses for decades if not centuries. As a result of this policy, child sexual abuse by Catholic clergy developed and continued as a pervasive and systemic problem in the Catholic Church, in which perpetrators were protected and victims were silenced. This mandatory policy adhered to by Bishops and Dioceses in the United States created a foreseeable risk of clergy sexual abuse. -

Saint Peter Damian – Part I Sodomy, Pederasty and the Emasculation of a Saint By Randy Engel Introduction rd February 23 on the traditional Roman Catholic calendar is the feast day of one of the greatest saints in the Church, Saint Peter Damian (1007 – 1072), an Italian Benedictine monk and hermit, Cardinal-Bishop of Ostia, a precursor of the Hildebrandine reform in the Church, a key figure in the moral and spiritual reformation of the lax and incontinent clergy of his time and a Doctor of the Church. I first made the acquaintance of Saint Peter Damian in 2002 when I was researching the history of sodomy and pederasty in the Church in the Middle Ages for The Rite of Sodomy. When I obtained Damian’s treatise Liber Gornorrhianus (The Book of Gomorrah) written sometime between 1049 and 1054, as an inter-loan acquisition from Catholic University of America, I thought I had died and gone to heaven. Indeed, heaven or Paradiso was where Dante has placed the saintly Peter Damian near the end of his Canto XXI (Seventh Heaven: Sphere of Saturn) in his epic literary masterpiece, the Divine Comedy. So impressed was I with Peter Damian’s work, that I took two months off from my research to pen a two-part series for Catholic Family News (June/July 2002) titled, “St. Peter Damian’s Book of Gomorrah – A Moral Blueprint for Our Times.” Later, I expanded the article for inclusion in The Rite of Sodomy. Today, fourteen years later, this article continues to be the most popular reprint on the New Engel Publishing website. -

The Catholic Church and Child Sexual Abuse: It’s Time to Come Clean Kieran Tapsell Introduction This is a speech given by Kieran Tapsell, the author of Potiphar’s Wife: The Vatican Secret and Child Sexual Abuse (ATF Press 2014) to a meeting at the Pumphouse Hotel, Melbourne, Australia, organised by Catholics for Renewal and Catalyst for Renewal on 29 October 2014. The organisers invited the Rev. Professor Ian Waters, an Australian canon lawyer to respond. Kieran is a former seminarian from the 1960s who became an Australian attorney. On his retirement in 2004, he became intrigued by the case of one of his seminary professors who had become a bishop and who refused to give to the police a report by a canon lawyer into child sexual abuse by a group of priests in his diocese. The police issued a search warrant and his presbytery was searched. The priests were duly convicted and imprisoned. Kieran suspected that the reason this bishop – a good and honourable man – would have refused to hand over this report was because he felt restrained from doing so. This led to Kieran’s returning to the study of canon law and the eventual publication of his book, Potiphar’s Wife: The Vatican Secret and Child Sexual Abuse (ATF Press 2014). At the time of the publication of the book, the Australian Government had established a major investigation into child sexual abuse in institutions in Australia through a Royal Commission headed by Justice Peter McLellan. The Australian Church has made detailed submissions to the Royal Commission, but not once has it referred to the effect of the pontifical secret imposed by canon law since 1922 on allegations of child sexual abuse by clergy. -
Gay Catholic Clergy in the US Is Thirty Percent
CATHOLIC TEACHING ABOUT HOMOSEXUALITY AND PRACTICE AMONG CLERGY Certainly it is time to have an intelligent and informed dialogue about homosexuality in the Catholic Church— among the clergy and laity. That is not easy because in history Christian thought has branded gayness in various hideous and distorted terms, most recently as an intrinsic disorder. All scientific, psychological, biological, cultural, developmental, pastoral and spiritual expertise must be summoned to calm and rational discourse so important for the lives of millions of men and women. Eminent among those in need of sensible and honest thoughtful exchange about homosexuality are Catholic bishops and priests whose numbers include a significant proportion of gay oriented men. A conservative estimate of gay Catholic clergy in the US is thirty percent. That figure has held steady for several decades in the face of assiduous scrutiny; many Vatican insiders speculate that the accurate number is closer to fifty percent. Homosexual orientation, either in the Catholic clergy or in the general population, is no more a fundamental danger to moral and social stability than heterosexually oriented men (women). In fact the roster of Christian saints is full (some say loaded) with gay men and women. The church documents listed below are testimony to the long laborious struggle spiritually minded men have had with human sexuality in general and homosexuality in particular. Recent pronouncements from Vatican officials reemphasize the depth of the misconceptions about human sexuality that persist. Intrinsic is the judgment that betrays the misguided and false absolutistic position the church maintains about sex. Masturbation, sex prior to marriage, or out-side of it, birth control and homosexual activity are NOT intrinsically evil.
