Graphic, Textual 2.00 meters Title: R.B.A. Cragg fonds Dates of Creation: 1933-1979 Physical Description: ca. 80 cm of photographs, ca. 40 cm of negatives, ca. 4000 slides, and 1 cm of textual records Biographical Sketch: Richard Balderston Alec Cragg was born on December 5, 1912 in Minatitlan, Mexico while his father worked on a construction contract. In 1919 his family moved to Canada to settle. Cragg gained training as a printer and worked in various towns before being hired by the Kamloops Sentinel in 1944. Cragg worked for the Sentinel until his retirement at age 65, and continued to write a weekly opinion column entitled “By The Way” until shortly before his death. During his time in Kamloops Cragg was active in the Kamloops Museum Association, the International Typographical Union (acting as president on the Kamloops branch for a time), the BPO Elks Lodge Kamloops Branch, and the Rock Club. Cragg was married to Queenie Elizabeth Phillips, with whom he had one daughter (Karen). Richard Balderson Alec Cragg died on January 22, 1981 in Kamloops, B.C. at age 68. Scope and Content: Fonds consists predominantly of photographic materials created by R.B.A. Cragg during his time in Kamloops. Fonds also contains a small amount of textual ephemera collected by Cragg and his wife Queenie, such as ration books and souvenir programs. -

Donaghy, Q.C. for the Respondent Kemp Edmonds, for the Attorney-General for British Columbia Reasons for Judgment This matter comes before me by way of stated case from the Assessment Appeal Board, constituted under the Assessment Equalization Act, chapter 32 of the Statutes of British Columbia, 1953. The opinion of the Court is requested on four questions of law, the last three of which are dependent on an affirmative answer to the first. Inasmuch as I am finding a negative answer to the first question, it is not necessary to deal with the other three. The following facts appear in the stated case: The Burrard Dry Dock Company Limited is the owner of three floating dry-docks used in connection with its ship-repairing operation in the City of North Vancouver. Their function is to provide a means of removing ships from the water for the purpose of effecting repairs. Dry-dock No. 1 has a rated capacity of 15,000 tons and has an over-all length of 556 feet 6 inches. Dry- dock No. 2 is slightly smaller. Dry-dock No. 3's rated capacity is 2,000 tons and is 250 feet long. They are afloat at all times and rise and fall with the tide, and can be submerged to a depth sufficient for the reception of vessels being docked for repairs. -

Editorial A Perspective on Canada’s Three Shipyard Decision In August 2019 the Canadian government announced the two more added shortly aft er the war. But in the 1920s start of a competitive process to build six new medium and during the Great Depression naval shipbuilding work and heavy Canadian Coast Guard icebreakers, thereby of- declined dramatically. Th ose yards that survived did so fi cially opening up Canada’s National Shipbuilding Strat- based on repair work. World War Two then elevated the egy (NSS) to a third naval shipyard. Canadian Engineering History: A Thumbnail Sketch by Andrew H. (Drew) Wilson, FCAE May 2020 Prepared at the request of the President of the Canadian Academy of Engineering Preamble Engineering can be, and has been, defined in a variety of ways. A very early definition was that it is “the art of directing the great source of power in Nature for the use and convenience of people.” Nowadays, it has to be considered as an informed activity performed by purpose-trained practitioners in regard to the design, production and maintenance of machinery, constructions, processes and devices that is being augmented constantly by experience, research, and information that extends beyond science and technology and requires some understanding of economics and business, the law, the social sciences, and politics, as well as an appreciation of the past as well as the future. This paper has been written especially for students of engineering, to introduce them to some of the past events and achievements in engineering activity in Canada. The text is relatively short and makes use of information that has already appeared in other, longer stories of Canadian engineering. For the purposes of this paper, however, some of Newfoundland and Labrador’s engineering achievements prior to 1949 have been included. The illustrations are also few in number, but a bibliography has been appended to encourage further reading. To provide some background to the events and achievements, some economic, social and political information has been included. To help accommodate its ‘thumbnail’ description, this paper omits specific references to Canadian achievements abroad, to engineering in the Armed Forces, and to some of the companies with obvious engineering connections. -
