Graphic, Textual 2.00 meters Title: R.B.A. Cragg fonds Dates of Creation: 1933-1979 Physical Description: ca. 80 cm of photographs, ca. 40 cm of negatives, ca. 4000 slides, and 1 cm of textual records Biographical Sketch: Richard Balderston Alec Cragg was born on December 5, 1912 in Minatitlan, Mexico while his father worked on a construction contract. In 1919 his family moved to Canada to settle. Cragg gained training as a printer and worked in various towns before being hired by the Kamloops Sentinel in 1944. Cragg worked for the Sentinel until his retirement at age 65, and continued to write a weekly opinion column entitled “By The Way” until shortly before his death. During his time in Kamloops Cragg was active in the Kamloops Museum Association, the International Typographical Union (acting as president on the Kamloops branch for a time), the BPO Elks Lodge Kamloops Branch, and the Rock Club. Cragg was married to Queenie Elizabeth Phillips, with whom he had one daughter (Karen). Richard Balderson Alec Cragg died on January 22, 1981 in Kamloops, B.C. at age 68. Scope and Content: Fonds consists predominantly of photographic materials created by R.B.A. Cragg during his time in Kamloops. Fonds also contains a small amount of textual ephemera collected by Cragg and his wife Queenie, such as ration books and souvenir programs. 2 KAMLOOPS MUSEUM AND ARCHIVES 1989.009, etc. R.B.A. Cragg fonds 1933-1979 Access: Open. Graphic, Textual 2.00 meters Custodial History: Collection was originally comprised of accession 1989.009, which was donated to the Kamloops Museum and Archives on February 14, 1989 by Karen Willies, R.B.A. Cragg’s daughter. Additional material which had originally been placed in the Vertical Files collection (accessions 0.2977, 0.3002, and 1965.047) were accrued to this collection during processing in 2019. Accessions 0.2977 and 1965.047 were donated by R.B.A. Cragg in 1958 and on April 10, 1965, respectively. Accession 0.3002 was donated at an unknown time by Queenie Cragg. 3 KAMLOOPS MUSEUM AND ARCHIVES 1989.009, etc. R.B.A. Cragg fonds 1933-1979 Access: Open. Graphic, Textual 2.00 meters Notes: Source of supplied title: Title based on contents of fonds. Arrangement: No original order of fonds was apparent during reprocessing in 2019, so current order was generally maintained by the Archivist. Fonds is arranged into two series based on format of records: Photographic Materials and Other Materials. A number of slides had been rearranged from their original numeric order (as noted in the slide index), so misplaced slides were reordered wherever possible, and any remaining organization was retained by the archivist. Photographs from file 1989.009.048 Photo Album may have been removed from the album prior to processing and placed in the general KMA Photograph Collection. Some photographs remaining in the album were assigned KMA photo numbers prior to the collection being fully processed. All photographs that were placed in the KMA Photograph Collection have been reunited with this fonds, where possible, and it has been assumed that they were donated as part of accession 1989.009. KMA photo numbers have been retained. Textual records which had formerly been placed in the Vertical Files Collection have been arranged chronologically based on accession date. Access restrictions: No restrictions on access. The archivist reserves the right to restrict access to any fragile material for preservation purposes. Terms governing use and reproduction: No reproduction permitted without consent of copyright holder. It is the researcher's responsibility to obtain permission for the reproduction of materials for publication or dissemination. Finding aids: File list is available for this fonds. Accruals: No further accruals are expected. Treatment note: All photographs and slides that were formerly stored in original photo envelopes were removed and placed in archival photo envelopes (Files 1989.009.001 to 1989.009.1989.009.047). Envelopes have been retained separately. Photographs in Photo Album (1989.009.048) were removed from album pages as they were loose. Photographs and slides were filed in archival envelopes based on album pages, with original placement order of the photos and negatives maintained (left to right, top to bottom, with negatives originally placed in attached envelopes to back of pages). Many pages did not contain the full amount of photographs (9 possible total in 3x3 grid). Page inscriptions have been noted on archival photo envelopes, and album pages have been retained separately. 4 KAMLOOPS MUSEUM AND ARCHIVES 1989.009, etc. R.B.A. Cragg fonds 1933-1979 Access: Open.
