This Data Structure Report (DSR) presents the results from the excavation works at Lady Jane’s Cottage in Eglinton Country Park, North Ayrshire. 2. The works were organised by Rathmell Archaeology Ltd. Kilwinning Heritage volunteers supported Rathmell Archaeology staff to deliver the works with the support of North Ayrshire Council, the landowner. The works were scheduled so that Guides from the International Guides Camp at Eglinton (Ayrwaves 2017) could visit the site, discover more about the estate and its archaeology, as well as taking part in some practical exercises. Historical & Archaeological Background 3. Lady Jane’s Cottage is an estate cottage (NGR: NS4821 0608, RCAHMS Canmore ID 206579, WoSAS Pin: 17710) which is known to have stood on the northern banks of the Lugton Water as it flows west beyond Eglinton Castle. The river at this point retains a strong meandering path suggesting it has not been canalised, unlike the stretch closer to the castle. 4. Historic Ordnance Survey mapping (from the 1st edition in 1860 – see Figure 1a) depicts the cottage, a bridge across the river and a monumental pillar to the north. This landscape remains consistent until the 4th edition (1940) at which time the cottage is no longer mapped (Figure 1c). The suggestion is that the cottage was demolished between 1910 and 1940, although at this time the bridge and pillar remained. 5. Photographic evidence (see Figure 2a and 2b) depicts a single storey brick-built structure with a thatched roof. Some of these images have been attributed with a date in the 1920s, suggesting that demolition may have occurred during the 1930s. 6. The cottage’s name makes reference to Lady Jane Montgomerie, the daughter of Hugh Montgomerie, 12th Earl of Eglinton and Eleanora Hamilton. She married Captain Archibald Hamilton in 1828 and died on 23 February 1860, without issue. Into her care was placed the two surviving grandsons of the 12th Earl after the death of her brother Maj-General Archibald Montgomerie on board ship off Alicante in 1814 (buried in Gibraltar). 7. The cottage is described as follows: "Near to the gardens, in a remote corner, more than half encircled by the river, a remarkably handsome cottage has been reared, and furnished, under the direction of Lady Jean Montgomery, who has contrived to unite neatness and simplicity, with great taste, in the construction of this enchanting hut. That amiable lady, spends occasionally, some part of her leisure hours, about this delightful cottage: viewing the beauties, and contemplating the operations of nature, in the foliage of leaves, blowing of flowers,

Subject to approval to proceed, Transport Scotland, as promoters of the Proposed Scheme, would ensure that those responsible for detailed design would be required to demonstrate that such modifications would not detrimentally change the significance of the impacts described in this Environmental Statement. 4.2 Principal Design Components 4.2.1 The Proposed Scheme would involve the construction of approximately 3.8km of wide single carriageway incorporating lengths of overtaking lane from a proposed roundabout on the existing A737, located between the Wilson car auction site junction and the A737 bridge over the Caaf Water, to a proposed tie in to the existing single carriageway A737 approximately 500m northeast of Birkentop Cottage. 4.2.2 There would be one intermediate junction in the form of a roundabout where the bypass would intersect with the B707.

Similarly, engineering activities, such as watercourse diversions and crossings can have an adverse impact on the water environment if appropriate mitigation measures are not employed. 16.1.2 This Chapter discusses the potential impacts of the Proposed Scheme on the water environment. Executive Summary 1.1 The proposed Scheme comprises the construction of a dam to form a flood water storage reservoir just north of Kilbirnie together with other local measures in Kilbirnie, Glengarnock and Dalry. These mostly comprise of flood protection walls with a focus on protecting property at risk in central Kilbirnie, adjacent to the Powgree Burn in Glengarnock and in Mill Park, Dalry. 1.2 Cabinet previously received a progress update on the development of the Upper Garnock Flood Protection Scheme on 12 December 2017 advising that Scottish Government had confirmed the Scheme on a preliminary basis and that the Council was required to hold a Public Hearing to consider the Scheme and outstanding objections and should appoint an independent Reporter. 1.3 The Public Hearing date was set for 18th April 2018 and a Reporter was appointed. All parties including this Council submitted formal Statements of Case and in some cases further responses to statements were submitted. Historical Development The first mention of Irvine in historical records is as a prehistoric pagan religious site, where standing stones were believed to be situated. This site is then believed to have converted to Christianity at a later date. From this point there appears to continuously have been settlement at Irvine but there is no mention of the date of the foundation of the Burgh of Irvine. In the 13th Century it is likely that there were two village settlements, one beside the Parish church and the other around the Castle. Robert II passed a new Royal Charter in 1372 declaring Irvine as a Kings Burgh and by 1400, Irvine was firmly established as a Royal Burgh. The town had been continually expanding and now had a Tollbooth (built in 1386) and housing had extended towards Seagate, where Seagate Castle had been constructed. The lands to the west of the town centre were outwith the Royal Burgh of Irvine.

A number of areas of river erosion have also been noted in Kilbirnie. To the north of Kilbirnie the floodplain is restricted as it flows through a steep sided valley; however, there are substantial areas of flooding to the south, which would predominantly impact agricultural land. These southern floodplains are located upstream of the town of Dalry. The Rye Water flows into Dalry from the north-west with a risk of flooding to an industrial area which may be attributed to the downstream confluence of the Rye Water and the Garnock Water. Surface water flooding within the area occurs predominantly in rural locations, or is potentially combined with flooding to smaller watercourses.
