Stroll With It 4! Walking for Everyone

Why walk?

Walking is a great way to stay healthy and has many benefits: • Helps to control weight • Builds muscles and maintains healthy bones and joints • Improves heart and lung function • Helps you to relax • Reduces signs of stress and anxiety • Gives you more energy • Reduces high blood pressure and cholesterol • Keeps your brain active • Boosts self confidence

Walks are expected to last approximately 1 -1.5 hours. It is advised that you wear comfortable shoes and dress appropriately for the weather.

All walks take place on Wednesdays and start at 11 am at the Trinity – Active Travel Hub in Bridegate, Irvine, unless stated as a different start point. A few of the walks require using public transport. For these, information has been given assuming travel from Irvine town centre. Please check your options for public transport with Stagecoach.

The walk is entirely on paved surfaces. There are some steps and a slight slope. Walk starts at 11am at the Trinity Active Travel Hub in Bridgegate, Irvine.

2. 29 January – The Carter and his Horse 1.8 miles Today’s walk takes us down to Irvine’s harbour. The walk is entirely on surfaced paths and pavements. Walk starts at 11am at the Trinity Active Travel Hub in Bridgegate, Irvine.

3. 5 February – A Day at the Races 3.5 miles Today we will be heading up to the historic former racecourse which still hears the pounding of horses hooves once a year. The walk is entirely on surfaced paths. Walk starts at 11am at the Trinity Active Travel Hub in Bridgegate, Irvine.

4. 12 February - A Daunder in 2.3 miles On today’s circular walk we will be visiting Dreghorn, exploring Annick park and part of the National Cycle Network 73. The walk is on surfaced paths. Walk starts at 11am at the bus stop by Greenwood Academy car park, Dreghorn. Public Transport – Stagecoach 11 from Irvine Town Centre.

5. 19 February – A Short Stroll in Milgarholm Park 2.0 miles Let’s explore the park that is (almost) on the Trinity’s doorstep. The walk is entirely on surfaced paths although these may be muddy in places. There is one short flight of steps. Walk starts at 11am at the Trinity Active Travel Hub in Bridgegate, Irvine. 6. 26 February – An Eglinton Escapade 2.2 miles Today we will make our first visit of 2020 to . This is a short stroll to the historic centre of the park. The walk is on partially surfaced paths and may be muddy in places. Walk starts at 11am. We will meet on Road at the bus stop after Watercut Road (entrance to Neil Brothers). This is the first bus stop after the A78 flyover. Public transport - Stagecoach bus 11 from Irvine Town Centre.

7. 4 March – Exploring the Beach Park 2.5 miles Irvine Beach park has a network of paths for us to explore. Most of the paths are surfaced although some are narrow so the walk may also involve walking on grassed surfaces. Walk starts at 11am outside the Harbour Arts Centre, Harbour Street, Irvine.

8. 11 March - A Woodland Walk at Ayrshire Central Hospital 1.5miles The woodland is just starting to wake up after the winter. Can we find any signs of spring amongst the trees? The path is surfaced although there may be a short walk over a grass and mud path. Walk starts at 11am at the main entrance (north) to Ayrshire Central Hospital, Kilwinning Road, Irvine. Public transport - Stagecoach bus 11 from Irvine Town Centre.

Come and find out more about Irvine of yesteryear. The walk is entirely on surfaced paths and pavements although there may be a short distance over cobbles. Walk starts at 11am at the Trinity Active Travel Hub in Bridgegate, Irvine.

10. 25 March – NCN 73 Dreghorn to Irvine 3.2 miles Today’s walk follows the from Dreghorn back to Irvine Town Centre (one way). The route follows the National Cycle Route and is on surfaced paths throughout. Walk starts at 11am at the bus stop by Greenwood Academy car park, Dreghorn. Public transport - Stagecoach 11 from Irvine Town Centre.

11. 1 April – Down to the Harbour 1.8 miles Let’s get some fresh sea air today. Can we spot any wildlife in the harbour? Today's walk is on surfaced paths and pavements throughout. Walk starts at 11am at the Trinity Active Travel Hub in Bridgegate, Irvine.

12. 8 April – Back to the Bridges 1.8 miles Today we will be crossing the river Irvine again and again. There is one short flight of steps and a slope on the journey. Walk starts at 11am at the Trinity Active Travel Hub in Bridgegate, Irvine. 13. 15 April - Easter Fun – Families welcome 1.2 miles Join us today for a short walk with some eggstra fun! Walk starts at 11am at the Trinity Active Travel Hub in Bridgegate, Irvine.

14. 22 April – Tarryholme Ponds 3.5 miles Today’s walk will take us over to the ponds beyond Tarryholme. The walk is all on surfaced paths. Walk starts at 11am at the Trinity Active Travel Hub in Bridgegate, Irvine.

15. 29 April – Kilwinning down to Irvine 3.0 miles Today we will walk along the from the edge of Kilwinning to Irvine town centre. The route is on surfaced paths although these may be muddy in places. This is a one way walk. Walk starts at 11am. We will meet at the bus stop after Woodmill junction and immediately after the pelican crossing on Irvine Road, Kilwinning, across from the Eglinton Allotment site. Public transport - Stagecoach bus 11 from Irvine Town Centre.

16. 6 May - Around the Town 1.5 miles Today we will explore some more parts of the town centre and show you the Trinity’s closed cycle loop. The walk is entirely on pavements. Walk starts at 11am at the Trinity Active Travel Hub in Bridgegate, Irvine.

The walk is entirely on surfaced paths and pavements. Walk starts at 11am at the Trinity Active Travel Hub in Bridgegate, Irvine.

18. 20 May – Bluebell time at Ayrshire Central Hospital 1.5 miles Will the woods be a sea of blue or a multicoloured riot of colour on this late spring walk? The path is surfaced although there may be a short walk over a grass and mud path. Walk starts at 11am at the main entrance (north) to Ayrshire Central Hospital, Kilwinning Road, Irvine. Public transport - Stagecoach bus 11 from Irvine Town Centre.

19. 27 May - Another Stroll in Eglinton 3.0 miles Today we will be exploring more of Eglinton Park. Paths may be rough underfoot and can be muddy. Walk starts at 11am. We will meet on Kilwinning Road at the bus stop after Watercut Road (entrance to Neil Brothers). This is the 1st bus stop after the A78 flyover. Public transport -Stagecoach bus 11 from Irvine Town Centre.

20. 3 June – Cadgers Racecourse 3.0 miles This walk takes us back to the former racecourse. If the ground is dry we might follow the actual route of the course. Paths may be uneven and muddy. Walk starts at 11am at the Trinity Active Travel Hub in Bridgegate, Irvine.

The walk is on surfaced paths and pavements. There is one flight of steps. Walk starts at 11am at the Trinity Active Travel Hub in Bridgegate, Irvine.

22. 17 June – Kilwinning Exploration 2.0 miles Today we will take a stroll around the highways and byways of the town. The paths may be uneven in places. Walk starts at the main entrance to Ayrshire College, Kilwinning Campus, on Lauchlan Way. Public transport - Stagecoach bus 11 from Irvine Town Centre.

23. 24 June – Down to the Sea 2.6 miles For our last walk of this programme we will be going to the seaside and may even take a stroll on the beach. The walk will largely be on surfaced paths and pavements and may be sandy in places. Walk starts at 11am at the Trinity Active Travel Hub in Bridgegate, Irvine.

• Most of the walks in the programme are on footways or surfaced paths. Some of these may be uneven and it is advised that you wear comfortable stout shoes or trainers.

• Please wear clothing appropriate to the weather; a wet weather option can also keep the wind out even if it isn’t raining.

• Walkers are responsible for carrying their own water.

• Walkers must complete a registration form prior to starting the walks.

• If you have any medical condition that may affect you on the walk please tell the walk leader and ensure that this is noted on your registration form.

• Walkers are responsible for their own medication but it must be close at hand if required on the walk.

• Walkers are walking at their own risk.
