5 fficer Reports From the Seneschal:

To the Sanguine Shire of Rosenfeld:

It is my great pleasure to step into the role of Seneschal for our Shire this month. Honorable Lady Calena di Rosa Nero has been a fantastic and steadfast supporter of our group for as long as has been allowed under Kingdom law, so it is time for the reins to be passed and her tenure to begin anew as our Hospitaler. With her experience and knowledge, I’ll have ample guidance for this transition.

In my letter of intent to the Kingdom Seneschal, I stated that the main goal for my time as your Seneschal will be revitalization and growth. We’ve had some new members move into our shire from outlying lands, and some new faces have yet to be seen due to pandemic restrictions. This is the basis for maintaining and strengthening not only our group status, but also our camaraderie. The more people we have that are interested in the same activities and topics, the stronger our unity becomes, and the easier it will be to work together towards common goals. For example, a year ago the Shire didn’t have thrown weapons, but now there’s enough interest to be able to hold practices with multiple people in attendance (when we’re allowed.) I’d like to see the same with chivalric fighting, herbalism, Middle Eastern dance, and any and all other activities for which we have interested persons, but currently no outlet.

Revitalization and growth comes about with bringing existing members together and with recruiting new members. Those who have been with us for an extended time bring wisdom, experience, knowledge, and expertise, while new members will bring fresh ideas and infectious enthusiasm. I’ve been in contact with His Excellency Owen Ap Aeddan of Mooneschadowe to provide future consultation regarding member recruitment and retention with a workshop once the restrictions are lifted. I’d also like to talk about local area demos and a collections drive for loaner armor, weapons, and garb for all these potential/probable newcomers. These topics will be brought up in future populace meetings, but I want to mention it now so thoughts and ideas could begin to percolate.

All in all, we have huge potential, and I’m very much looking forward to cheering you all along with each endeavor, every success, and I know whole-heartedly that great things are on the horizon. Thank you so much for everything you do!

Yours in Gracious Service, Meg Sterling

6 From the Minister of Arts & Sciences: Lady Stormig to the Populace of the Shire-- her greetings and blessing, It is my most fervent hope that this missive finds you all in great health and possessed of the will to continue forward even as we face these dark days of winter that have most recently been plagued with a surfeit of troubles. Despite the tribulations of February we did have one excellent Zoom class taught by Lord Gird Truthsayer in which he introduced us to a wide variety of carving tools and implements both modern and historical. Most fascinating to this listener was learning that bull shark hide was used as sandpaper. As the Equinox draws near and the sun returns from her slumber we can look forward to further classes covering such topics as Bone Needle Use Physics and Basics of SC A Heraldry. It is heartening to see so many in our Shire remaining engaged in the learning, practicum, and sharing of Medieval and Renaissance life despite the continuation of the Plague. Mayhap as the wheel of the year continues to turn we will be permitted for companionable Arts and Science diversions. YIS, Stormig av Sandkrok

(Greeting based upon a letter from Stephen, Count of Blois and Chartres to his wife, Adele, during the 1st Crusade. http://www.dragonbear.com/letters.html)

From the Chronicler: Because we know that you especially desire to hear from us and to learn the state of our prosperity, we think it fitting to first tell you of this. We continue to receive submissions for our ongoing Pearl Anniversary Celebration! Baroness Zubeydah has forwarded images of over a dozen event ads from archived issues of The Black Star which Tobias and I reviewed in order to glean history for our “String of Events” !

I am actively seeking a deputy who is interested in learning the ins and outs of this office with plans of (hopefully) applying for the position when it comes open later in the year. If you are at all interested in potentially becoming our local Chronicler, please reach out to me.

NOTE: Agreeing to be a deputy is not a conscription to future service. You will still have to apply for the position when it comes open should you choose to.

In Honoured Service, Jessimond of Emerickeskepe (Opening line from a public letter from Conrad II to the Abbot of Corvey during the German’s Crusade in 1148 CE. http://www.dragonbear.com/letters.html) 7 fficer Reports (continued)

From the Herald: To mine well-beloved Shire I do greet you all with the bright hope that you have each weathered winter’s recent storms with no lasting ill-effects.

On the 21st of March I will be teaching my second Rosenfeld Virtual A & S class. This one will be on the Basics of SCA Heraldry. This will be a two-part class with the first half being an overview of the various aspects of heraldry in the SCA. The second half will be geared towards members who might be thinking of designing their device and/or badge wherein I shall be reviewing the basic rules of heraldry in the SCA.

As always, if anyone is interested in submitting personal heraldry, (names, device/arms, or badges) I am happy to assist you in any way that I can. I volunteered for the recent Virtual Herald’s Point project where I gained experience in both name and armory consults. I also had the pleasure to make contact with Heralds across the Known World to whom I can contact should I need assistance so that I may better serve you.

Lastly, I am also available for consultation regarding elements for your Achievement of Arms if you are considering registering yours, or if you need to make changes and/or additions to one you have already registered.

I continue to attend Ansteorra’s monthly OSCAR Commentary Sessions as well as monitoring notifications from the SCA College of Arms.

In Humble Service, Jessimond of Emerickeskepe From the (Interim) Hospitaller: Unto our spectacular Shire do come these sincere greetings.

It gives me great joy to know I can continue serving our group by applying for Hospitaller. Once I am approved, my first tasks will be to go through the existing loaner garb that is currently in storage. This will begin with a thorough inventory and inspection to evaluate the items we have. Next, these items will all need to be cleaned and some it is likely that some minor repairs may need to be made. I will be asking for help with repairs if I am not able to do them myself. Lastly, notes will be made on what items may be needed to complete an ensemble, as well as what size ranges we may be lacking.

Thank you for your continued support as I transition to being Rosenfeld's new Hospitaller.

In continued service, Calena di Nero Rosa

10 Pearl Anniversary

By Tobias and Jessimond of Emerickeskepe A String of Events As part of the Rosenfeld Pearl Celebration, this regular featured article will run month- ly tidbits about various events Rosenfeld has hosted since its inception… History of Three Kings - The Next Six Years Always held in the fall, these amazing melee events originally included complex historical scenarios that were originally created by Master Richard Fairbourne who was the Event Steward and Scenario Coordinator for the first six years. Upon moving from Rosenfeld, he continued to assist with scenario coordination for several more years. Let us take a closer look at what we have uncovered thus far about those next six years…

2001 – Battle of Three Kings - The War of The Three Popes Nov. 10-12, 2001 found the Battle of Three Kings being held at the Canton Trade Days site once again. By this time Three Kings had grown so large that it required a security team. For every hour a person patrolled on a scheduled shift that person received a colored bead. The beads a person earned were deposited in a receptacle on site that represented one of the Three Popes. The beads were counted and used in determining the number of War Points awarded to that Pope. From the historical documents available, it is unclear if this was the beginning of the Service War Point, but it seems plausible. Queen Larisa was one of the three principles, but the names of the others involved are currently lost to time. On Sunday there were Rapier Melees involving capture the flag scenarios to get everyone ready for the ravine battle for Gulf Wars. The Arts & Sciences competition was determined by popular vote with the populace receiving three beads each for voting for their favorite entries. The A & S War Point was granted to the Pope whose entrants gathered the most beads. Entries were anonymous. Documentation was not required, but any documentation provided was to be done without referencing the artisan. Artisans could enter more than one item. However, they were restricted to one entry per medium with no more than three entries, total, per artisan. Participants were required to indicate their choice of pope when they signed in. Those with multiple entries were not be required to choose the same pope for each entry. Also lost to time is information on which Pope won the War Chest.

11 2002 – Three Kings VIII The weekend of November 8-10, 2002 transported attendees to the year 1180 where possession of the Duchy of was under dispute! Conveniently, Three Kings did claim that land as their own: Otto of the Wettins (Otto of Nordheim, Duke of Bavaria), Frederick Barbarossa (Frederick I, Holy Roman Emperor), and Heinrich der Löwe (). Frederick was hoping to oust Henry from his ancestral lands. Henry the Lion struggled to retain his lands and avoid banishment. Otto hoped to gain supremacy over all in his efforts to increase his lands in Bavaria. War Points for this year's exciting activities included Fighting, Arts and Sciences, Equestrian, Service, and Target Archery! All participants were encouraged to bring an item to donate to the War Chest which was presented to the winning King. The Rosenfeld Castle was upgraded for this event which included melees, combat archery, and “other combat opportunities” according to the event flyer. Arts and Sciences was judged using the standardized judging forms. Items with a German theme received extra points! Entries were limited to one entry per King per person with additional items being displayed for comments only as time allowed. The Three “Kings” for this event were His Grace Duke Sigmund as Frederick 1, His Most Excellent Excellency Sir Pendaran as Henry the Lion, and the Noble Sir Asoph as Count Otto! Rhiannon ferch Cian was Autocrat with William de Molay coordinating merchants. The event was held at the Canton Trade Days site. Site fees were Adults: $10 Children 5-12: $5 Children under 5 FREE. Family max: $30. 2003 - Battle of Three Queens Throughout history, and even into our current , great men have led great nations and great kings have come forward to rule impressive Kingdoms. However, as historians know, there have also been some strong and powerful woman who ruled their lands! In the year 1560, three women stepped into history to lead their people; Queen Elizabeth I of England, Mary Queen of Scots, and the Queen Mother of , Catherine dé Medici. On October 3-5, 2003 the combined forces of Good Queen Bess carried the day. Queen Elizabeth won by 1 point. War Points were awarded for Chivalry Melees, A & S competition, Service, Bardic, Rapier Melees, Equestrian, and Archery. Duke Patrick Michael was the Autocrat who also designed the scenarios. For the rapier melees there was a fort battle, a field battle, a town battle, and a bridge battle. The melees alternated between chivalric and rapier. The bridge battle was a noted favorite. Wording in the original event ad seem to indicate that this was the first year for Rosenfeld’s Champions: Chivalric, Rapier, Bardic, Equestrian, Archery, and A & S, but this is unconfirmed at this time. Interestingly, there was a Teen Tavern known as “The Lazy Lion” that was open from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM for those children ages 8 and above. Refreshments were served compliments of Lady Vara, resident Tavern Keeper. Various games were set up for the children’s enjoyment! Battle of Three Queens marks the first time for Rosenfeld to utilize the new site Lake Hawkins RV Park! Site fees were Adults: $10 Children 5-17: $5 Children under 5 were FREE. Family max: $30.

12 2004 - Battle of Three Kings X

Held the weekend of November 12-14, 2004 the tenth anniversary Battle of the Three Kings included Bardic Collegium! It looks to have been a grand affair according to the ad in The Black Star...

There has always been history between France and England, some good, and some bad. The story of that amazingly influential woman, Eleanor of , leads the historian and our Society to another intriguing Three Kings event... in this our tenth anniversary.

We find the years of 1170 - 1173 with England and France at each other's throats. Louis VII, King of France, is supporting Eleanor of Aquitaine (his ex-wife) in her bid to place Prince Henry on the throne of England. However, her new husband, Henry II, is presently King of England and is not in agreement with Eleanor's plan. William Marshal as been sworn by King Henry II to protect, serve, and teach Prince Henry. Where will that lead?

Of course, King Henry II has three other sons... Richard, John, and Geoffrey. What will their parts be in this medieval Peyton Place? So, we find the main players in this 10th anniversary to be Eleanor, Henry II, and Louis VII. Will history play out the same way again, or will we change it to fit our own views? Come to Three Kings and be a part of the politics, the intrigue, and the battles that are the Middle Ages of the early 1170's. War points awarded for Chivalric Melees, Rapier Melees, Archery, Equestrian, Arts and Sciences, Service, and Bardic! Each person participating in the above scenarios was asked to bring a prize to contribute to the war chest. The War Chest was given to the victorious King and his henchmen - er, um - supporters to distribute as he saw fit. Grimver was this year’s Autocrat with Killian MacRaith as Co-Autocrat. Doña Antonia, Premier Bard of Ansteorra, Lord Alden, and Master Pendaran coordinated Bardic Collegium activities which included a diverse variety of classes. Site fee was $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 5-17 with children under 4 being admitted for FREE. 2005 - Battle of Three Kings XI - Clash of the TARTANS! There have always been warring Clans in Scotland. During the weekend of November 11-13, 2005 guests of the Shire of Rosenfeld were transported back to 1388. At this time three brothers vied for the power of the throne in Scotland. John, who changed his name to Robert III, was eventually crowned King of Scotland. John and his younger brother, Robert, Earl of Fife, had ambitions for the throne. Likewise did Alexander Buchan, known as the Wolf of Badenoch. However, the event ad cautions us not to delve too deeply into the politics of Kings or "would be" Kings, but rather that we should join Rosenfeld in experiencing the warring clans of the Highlands during The Clash of the TARTANS! These mighty warriors are descended from ancient Gaelic tribes and never shirk a bat- tle.: Clan MacKintosh was led by Duke Miguel and Duchess Conal. Clan Cameron, was led by Sir Gideon and Lady Bridget. Clan Davidson was led by Centurion Angus.

13 After the battles had all been fought, there was an old fashioned tavern with games and bardic to show word fame for the clan of your choice. There was also a raffle for a pavil- ion set up and other items. Tickets were on sale at Service Point. Again held at Lake Hawkins RV Park with Sir William DeMolay being the Autocrat. Site fees remained Adults: $10 Children 5-17: $5 Children 4 and under were FREE. Family max: $30.

2006- Battle of Three Kings November 3-5, 2006 found the grandsons of in a heated contention for land and power! Details for this event are sorely lacking as we were unable to uncover an event ad or find chatter about it on the archived Ansteorran list. What we do know is that in August 843 the Treaty of Verdun was signed. It was the first treaty to divide the into three kingdoms; one each for the three surviving sons of , son of Charlemagne. The treaty, signed in Verdun- sur-, ended the three-year Carolingian Civil War. This war was the basis of the 2006 Battle of Three Kings. Each of the three brothers were already established in their own kingdoms: Lothair in the Kingdom of Italy; Louis the German in Kingdom of Bavaria; and in the Kingdom of Aquitaine. However, the eldest son, , claimed the entirety of Louis the Pious’ kingdom. Not surprisingly, his brother, Louis the German, and their half-brother ,Charles the Bald, refused to acknowledge his claim and declared war against him. It is presumed that the event was held at Lake Hawkins RV Park with the customary, scenarios, activities, and War Points. However, who played the Principles and which brother was victorious? If anyone has an archived copy of the November 2006 Black Star, or other details pertaining to this event, please consider making such known to us! From Tegan’s perspective, it was the best camping experience of her life— cold weather, adoration from all, and a sense of security.

That first night, we sat up at a fire with Ainar and Mercedes. As a civilized creature does, Tegan sat listening and enjoying the company, occasionally soliciting belly rubs from Ainar, one of her favorite people. When we retired to bed, she plopped down in front of the heater in my tent and went instantly to sleep. One might think that as a security minded corgi, Tegan would be concerned. Particularly, as she had extremely strict rules about who was authorized to drink and who was not. However, Tegan had apparently handed out authorization cards to all of Wolfstar camped around us. And since all those warriors surrounded us, she determined that she did not have to stand guard duty.

At the opening to the event the next morning, the three “kings,”—Baron Ainar (as Harold Hadrada), Baron Godwyn Alfricson (as Harold Godwinson) and Duke Inman MacMoore (as William the Bastard), spoke to the crowd, drumming up support for their side. Since both Tegan and Danielle were a bit short, we went and stood at the front of the crowd so they could see.

Ainar spoke for a bit, thanking those who had come out to support him, and then stepped off to the side a few feet away from us. Harold Godwinson was equally brief, (Tegan had to suppress a yawn). But William the Conqueror, threw himself into the persona-play and started bellowing threats and imprecations at the two Saxon kings.

Tegan snapped to attention, listened to Inman carefully to make sure that he was actually saying, what she thought he was saying about Ainar, then stepped boldly onto the field. Throwing her chest out, she moved in front of Ainar to defend him, and fixed a steely eye on Inman. She barked out once to get his attention, then growled out a lengthy scold— this kind of yelling at Ainar was NOT going to be tolerated—don’t THINK I won’t come over there and herd you to the edge of this event, human, because I WILL—you just need to SETTLE it down RIGHT NOW.

Inman stopped speechless, and there was a moment of silence from all of us, as Tegan’s last words rung in the air. Then the entire gathered populous burst into laughter. Wolfstar was particularly delighted with her wolfish words. Not to be turned from her purpose though, Tegan continued keeping herself between Ainar and Inman the rest of the morning. Having identified Inman as a potential troublemaker, she also kept a covert eye on him the rest of the event. 17 Baron Thomas of Bryn Gwlad was so struck by Tegan’s eloquent defense, that he wanted to submit her name for an Award of Arms on the spot. Tegan gently declined and was gracious about the fact that the good baron had apparently been struck by Cupid’s arrow. During the afternoon bardic, he asked her to sit by him and help judge, and in walking through the encampment, his path just happened to come past our tent over and over.

Théorie de Musique la fin Delphina de Champeaux [email protected]

We have gone over the musical staff and its parts as well as the length notes and rests and what the names of the pitches are for each line or space of the staff. There are other symbols that help the musicians know how loud and how fast the music is performed.

You have the basic information needed to read music but like anything you need to practice. Below is chart of the notes and rests for you to practice. Maybe making flash cards might help… or start writing them one in groups of 4 beats and only 4 beats… or identifying the different notes and rests in music you have will be a great start. Keep practicing.

Remember, notes show two things, the length and pitch of a sound. A rest only shows the length of a silence. Both are equally important in music and therefor are counted the same.

All notes start with a note head, which is a simple circle. The first note is a whole Whole Rest = 4 beats note and it gets 4 beats. Adding a stem to the whole note makes it a half note and cuts the whole note in Half Rest = 2 beats half, making this new note worth 2 beats. Coloring in the note head makes the half note into a quarter note and divides the whole note into quarters, making this Quarter Rest = 1 beat note worth 1 beat. Adding a flag to the quarter note makes it an eighth note & divides the whole Eighth Rest = ½ beat note into eighths, making this note worth ½ a beat.

19 The sonnet redoublé, also known as a heroic crown of sonnets, is the longest poetic form I have tackled. It is a variation of the sonnet crown, which is 7 sonnets linked by last line/ first line repetition with the last line of the last sonnet being the same as the first line of the first.

The heroic crown is 15 sonnets, with the first 14 linked as they would be in a crown. The 15th sonnet (known as the Master Sonnet) is comprised from the first lines of the preceding 14 sonnets. For those quick with math, that’s 210 lines in iambic (rarely tetram- eter) pentameter. Or more aptly, about 4,200 syllables of poetry! This admittedly intense poetic form was invented by the Siena Academy, which was formed in 1460, though no heroic crowns exist today that were written there. It comes down to us as described by Giovanni Mario Crescimbeni in 1731 in his L'Istoria della volgar poesia, (History of Vernacular Poetry). A variation exists where the Master Sonnet comes first, and is comprised of the last lines of the following 14 sonnets. And of course, as with a crown, the last line of the poem is also the first line. I've written a few of these in various sonnet forms, and over the next few months would like to share my favorite. It’s an Epic (a story told in poem) in the Spenserian sonnet form, and following is its Master Sonnet. REQUIEM (part one of two) The master of a fierce and brutal art Upon whose dancing blade men’s lives are reaped Plies well this instrument that death imparts, On which his enemies’ lives render cheap.

Sweet music off that shining edge does weep A sanguine symphony no soul is saved, Amidst the ballet’s step to which he keeps With moonlight pirouetting off his blade.

This dance of death he’s danced since first arrayed, Destined to hold him always as its thrall, A dance from which there’s only one escape: To quit the dance then to the dance must fall. What laughing lips forever silenced now Beneath a starry, moonlight silvered crown. 20 Beneath a starry, moonlight silvered crown Where only silence normally should dwell, A bloody ballet rages unrenowned To the drumbeat of this most mortal hell.

From star’s own height there’s naught a soul could tell Of aught that haps where bloody sod is churned, Where sparks fly off sharp blades as death is dealt To flare like falling stars from Heaven spurned.

Yet mistress moon does earthward shining yearn To wreath a bright blade flashing from that field, Held by the shining son ‘round which aught turns In time to the rhythm of shot and steel.

Like as an earth-bound god he stands en garde: The master of a fierce and brutal art.

The master of a fierce and brutal art Expertly plucks each mortal note and chord, Alone but for the music he imparts, Alone but for the sharp edge of his sword.

Of this dread symphony of war, he’s lord. Each feint and thrust of battle’s waltz he’s known, Who once for king’s blood and for duty warred, And now for honor strums this song alone.

Now dances death to the dark tune he owns As booted feet across wet leaves do twirl. Each strike another sin to be atoned, Each shot another soul to hell be hurled.

As at a master’s hand, life’s threads unweave Upon whose dancing blade men’s lives are reaped.

21 Upon whose dancing blade men’s lives are reaped? Dread Death, that angel dark in shadows cloaked, Or he from whom the blooded blade does leap? From which of those does death truly evoke?

Is it the stately shears of Death invoked That Man should fear? Or is it Hell’s own wrath? For death’s assured as flame’s assured by smoke, And at life’s end it’s death will come at last.

Man’s will has led our hero to this path That wound him up to battle here alone, Standing tall against the fires of Hell’s lash Here at the bloody foot of Satan’s throne.

An angel with a laughing hero’s heart Plies well this instrument that death imparts.

Plies well this instrument that death imparts: The master’s blade long ago set aside, No more to be the master of this art, No more to be the hand at which men died.

Yet on this field he bears that blade tonight And sets it once again upon the fray. Though years have passed, he can’t forget the fight Nor lose the dance whose steps he long had trained.

A sacred oath he once swore on that blade To leave behind the darkness it had dealt, And for salvation on it he had prayed. Now rings it forth a funerary knell.

But to that sacred oath this blade must keep On which his enemies’ lives render cheap.

22

On which his enemies’ lives render cheap?

The path each chose that led them to this hell, Or fate’s cruel scythe that plucks weeds from the wheat? Of this perchance only the gods can tell.

His own life’s end long he has known full well For sins as his can have but one cruel end: To fall far from his home, his soul to sell In foreign lands, alone and forgotten.

But if life must eventually expend No better way to fall than by his choice, That each of his own sins he might transcend And to a silent life he might give voice.

On crimson notes his holy hymn repeats, Sweet music off that shining edge does weep.

Sweet music off that shining edge does weep Bright tears that for Her rightfully should fall, Whose fairest grace for whom his black heart beats, And She for whom he gladly gives his all.

It’s virtue’s grace that rends sinner’s downfall! No distant dream of heaven could compare To that angelic face which has enthralled All who have looked upon its beauty fair.

Now Heaven falls on him Her grace would share, And Hell will rise by his own hand that She Might by his stand escape and find somewhere Where virtue and angelic souls are free.

For Her release will spare his soul, depraved, A sanguine symphony no soul is saved.

23 Spinach Common Name: Spinach - From Anglo-French spinache, Old French espinache. Old folk etymology connects the word with Latin spina (spine) or with Medieval Latin Hispanicum olus.

Botanical Name: Spinacia oleracea

Family: Chenopodiaceae

Description: The best-known species grown today is Spinacia oleracea. Primarily two varieties are grown today; one with smooth leaves and the other being a wrinkled, savoy variety. There is also a savoy-hybrid available. Modern spinach has been developed to be more bolt resistant than older varieties.

Growing: Because spinach grows best in cool, temperate weather those living in northern growing areas often sow seeds in both the spring and fall. In warmer, southern areas such as Rosenfeld, we primary grow spinach during winter or early spring. Much like lettuce, if grown during warm weather and extended daylight, spinach plants will bolt, that is, they will develop their central stem too quickly. This not only draws growth and nutrition away from the leaves, but they also become tough and bitter. Hence the leaves are picked while immature, before the flower stem starts to grow. Baby Spinach is simply regular spinach harvested while very young.

History: It is widely believed that spinach originated in Persia where it was likely cultivated from Spinacia tetranda, an edible wild green that was originally known as aspanakh. By the 7th Century CE, this tasty, nutritious leafy green made its way

24 through India and into Nepal. In the year 647 CE the king of Nepal presented spinach to China as a gift. Thus, the Chinese called it “Persian Green” or the “Herb of Persia.” It is believed the Moors introduced spinach to Sicily in 827 CE and eventually brought it to Europe in the 1oth century, when they introduced it to Spain. As a result, in England spinach became known as “the Spanish vegetable”. It eventually reached Germany by the late 13th century. Its popularity continued to expand across the continent during the Middle Ages it eventually it became widely cultivated throughout Europe.

Spinach was noted as the favorite vegetable of Catherine de Medici. In 1533 it is purported that she brought her cooks with her when she left Florence, Italy, to marry King Henry II of France. The premise being that only they could prepare spinach in the variety of ways that she liked. Since that time, dishes prepared with spinach continue to be referred to as à la Florentine.

25 The Camp Kitchen By Atli Karlsson Jambalaya

INGREDIENTS 1 lb. sausage (Andouille or other spiced variety) 1 lb. chicken diced and precooked 1 cup uncooked rice 1 15 oz can each of chicken and beef broth 2 10 oz bags of trinity vegetable mix (onion, bell pepper, and celery) oregano thyme bay leaves Cajun seasoning hot sauce cooking oil Photos by Lord Atli Karlsson EQUIPMENT 12-inch Cast Iron Dutch Oven Charcoal briquets (about 40 pieces) Charcoal Chimney Starter (optional) Dutch Oven Stand or two bricks

DIRECTIONS For this dish, we will be starting with 15 charcoal briquettes on top of the Dutch oven and 15 on bottom. Once the oven is preheated, add enough cooking oil to coat the bottom and then cook the uncooked rice until it turns white. (Photo One) Photo One

26 Once the rice has turned white, we will add both cans of broth and the seasoning. With Cajun food, you will need to play with the recipe to find your exact level of spice. I start out with 3 bay leaves, a heaping tablespoon of Cajun seasoning (I use a mix of Tony's, garlic powder, onion powder, and chipotle chili powder for my Cajun mix), a teaspoon of oregano, a teaspoon of thyme, and a table- spoon of hot sauce (I use Sriracha hot sauce). (Photo Two)

You will then add in the vegetables, chicken, and sausage. Fill one of your broth cans with water and add that to the mixture. (Photo Three)

Add another 10 coals to the top of the oven (That brings us to 15 lower and 25 upper) and let the jambalaya simmer. Check every 15-20 minutes until you notice that it is starting Photo Three to thicken when stirred as seen here. (Photo Four)

Once it starts to thicken, slightly cock the lid as seen here so that the liquid will cook off faster. (Photo Five)

27 Check and stir every 5 minutes until it is thick enough to serve. ENJOY! (Photo Six and Seven)

Photo Six Cast iron storage - When you are done with your cast iron for the trip and are preparing to store it, coat the cast iron Photo Seven with a thin layer of cooking oil. Then use a lint-free towel to wipe off excess oil before storage. The blue disposable shop towels work wonderfully for this purpose.

30 To the Shire of Rosenfeld, greetings!

• Did you know that Ansteorra has its very own Wiki with over 800 articles? (Have you ever visited Wikipedia? Well, it's like that, but just for Ansteorra!)

• Did you know that YOU can have your very own page on the Wiki? Nearly 300 Ansteorrans already do! (Visit http://historian.ansteorra.org/wiki/index.php?title=Category:People to see just who has.)

• Did you know I would positively love the opportunity to assist you in either building a page on your own, or building one for you, complete with pictures, history, accomplishments, photos... whatever you want to share?

So much of the SCA is a shared, communal experience, but so much of our history is lost, because it is not recorded. There are so many stories to tell - and the Ansteorran Wiki is a beautiful place to share them and preserve them. Rosenfeld has a page on the wiki -- but only a tiny smidge of information about its rich history.

Won't you share YOUR stories of Rosenfeld's history and events - large and small - with the rest of the Kingdom?

Contributing content to the wiki is much, much easier than you think. If you can type an email, you can contribute to the wiki. Content you could share can be as varied as snippets of information about those living or passed who have inspired you, "No (bleep), there I was!" stories, photographs, songs, poems... nearly anything you can imagine! Having your own page built on the wiki is as easy as filling out an online form (http://historian.ansteorra.org/submission.php ) and attaching a few photos (though please take a moment to ensure they are less than 1 MG in size first, or they won’t attach properly).

I invite you to contact me at [email protected] with any questions you might have about submitting information to the wiki – or how to set up your own user account and perhaps even build your first wiki page.

Tell us your stories, Rosenfeld; we are waiting to hear them!!

IMPORTANT UPDATE: Thanks to the thoughtful suggestions of Master Rene Damours, Ansteorra’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer, and the labors of Ansteorra’s Webminister, Lord John Buchanan, the Persona Page Submission form now has a spot for individuals to provide Special Needs information -- mobility restrictions, allergies, In-Case-Of- Court instructions, etc. We also have a spot to provide information on your preferred pronouns. If you already have a wiki page and would like to add either pronouns or Special Needs information, please fill out the first three fields on the online form, and then only fill in the additional sections you'd like added.
