Music Notes The opening voluntary is dedicated to a priest who can sing apparently forever via cyclical breathing; one note, E-flat, is sustained throughout the entire variation, during which a cycle of a full day of services is heard, encompassing fragments of different hymns and an anthem at Evensong. Today’s opening hymn, “When morning gilds the skies,” emerges from the initial night-time texture and its hymn “Creator of the stars of night.” The bicycle was Elgar’s favorite mode of transportation. The music ends as it began (a clear night with shooting stars), such that on an “endless loop” it could be repeated eternally, the held note also being God’s constancy. The closing voluntary honors a marathon runner and St. George’s School alumnus who was godfather to the composer’s daughter, and whose uncle was a former warden of the parish. Both are from a set of variations based on stained glass windows at Hereford Cathedral, honoring the Herefordshire priest and author Thomas Traherne (1636-1674). Missa Zabriskie, a congregational Mass setting based on the hymn Sweet Sacrament Divine by The Rev. Francis Stanfield, is dedicated to The People of The Zabriskie Memorial Church of Saint John the Evangelist, Newport, Rhode Island (Past, Present, and Future). Stanfield was an English priest who worked in London’s Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Westminster. He published over a dozen devotional hymns including one set to a tune written in about 1878 by Edward Elgar, another famous Roman Catholic composer. Stanfield’s father, the prominent marine painter Clarkson Frederick Stanfield, was named for the slave trade abolitionist Thomas Clarkson and was a friend of Charles Dickens. The devout Stanfields were known not just for brilliance in their respective art-forms but also for their “personal simplicity and modesty.” The organ part of the Gloria contains two hymns for Maundy Thursday: Pange Lingua and Ubi caritas. It’s fun to say Missa Zabriskie out loud (try it), honoring the namesake parishioner who caused our present building and organ to be built in 1894 at a time when a fledgling nineteen-year old congregation in financial straits might have perished. The final hymn is sung to several different tunes, among them Beecher, Hyfrydol and Blaenwern. The Blaenwern tune, named after a farm in Wales known to its composer, is that most commonly sung in England today, and has been sung at both of the recent royal weddings. The tune gained popularity in America through Billy Graham crusades when it was sung to the text “What a Friend we have in Jesus.” Copyright Notices: Hymns reproduced from The Hymnal 1982 are copyright The Church Pension Fund, reproduced by permission of the Rite Song License of the Episcopal Diocese of Rhode Island. The Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost The Mass setting today is Missa Zabriskie by Peter Stoltzfus Berton (born 1968). Voluntary A cycle, from Hereford Variations Peter Stoltzfus Berton The People stand at the sound of the bell for the entrance of the Sacred Ministers into the church. Entrance Hymn When morning gilds the skies 1 Opening Acclamation Collect for Purity Almighty God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name, through Christ our Lord. People Summary of the Law Hear what our Lord Jesus Christ saith: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. Kyrie 2 Gloria Celebrant Glory be to God on high, 3 Collect of the Day Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And with thy spirit. Celebrant Let us pray. Grant, we beseech thee, merciful God, that thy Church, being gathered together in unity by thy Holy Spirit, may manifest thy power among all peoples, to the glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. People Old Testament (sitting) Joshua 24:1-2a, 14-18 And Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and called for the elders of Israel, and for their heads, and for their judges, and for their officers; and they presented themselves before God. And Joshua said unto all the people, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel: Now therefore fear the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the Lord. And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. And the people answered and said, God forbid that we should forsake the Lord, to serve other gods; For the Lord our God, he it is that brought us up and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and which did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the people through whom we passed: And the Lord drave out from before us all the people, even the Amorites which dwelt in the land: therefore will we also serve the Lord; for he is our God.
