ON THE WAY TO HEAVEN HOLY CROSS SCHOOL

Every year All Souls Day follows All Day. We celebrate 4TH GRADE SAINTS those who are in heaven, then we remember those on the way to heaven. Catholics believe that not all those who die in God's The 4th grade class of Holy Cross School grace are immediately ready for the Beatific Vision, that is, ready traditionally do a saints project. The calls this purification "." On the cover is this year’s group of saints.

The Catholic teaching on Purgatory requires belief in two realities: FIRST ROW (SAINT) 1) that there will be a purification of believers prior to entering heaven, and 2) that the prayers and Masses of the faithful in some way Emily Leininger Elizabeth Ann Seton benefit those in the state of purification. As to the duration, place, Brooke Hasenstab Margaret of Scotland and nature of this purification, the Church has no official dogma, Addy McCleod Agnes although St. Augustine and others used fire as a way to explain Kambyl Stipes the nature of the purification. As a more everyday explanation, Ava Borbely many liken Purgatory to a place or state where one gets "cleaned Erin Patton Mary, Mother of God up" before entering into the presence of Almighty God. Laura Wolter-Krupp Helen Ariana Howie Galla The Church prays for the faithful departed throughout the year. Natalia Andino-Guerra But All Souls Day is the general, solemn day of commemoration, Jose Andino-Guerra when the Church remembers, prays for, and offers

Masses for the faithful departed in the state of purification. The SECOND ROW Faithful will take this day to offer prayers on behalf of their departed relatives and friends. Donavan Gudauskas Christopher Nathan Spila Christians have been praying for their departed brothers and Anneliese Kisting Queen Esther sisters since the earliest days of Christianity. Early liturgies and Amanda Hummel Katherine Laboure inscriptions on catacomb walls attest to the ancientness of Ella Tangen Elizabeth of Hungary prayers for the dead. Francina Cecilia Praying for the dead is actually borrowed from Judaism, as Caleb Twohey indicated in 2 Maccabees 12:41-42. In the New Testament, St. Paul Aaron Hendron the prays for mercy for his departed friend Onesiphorus (2 Timothy Wendy Lopez Therese the Little Flower 1:18). Early Christian writers Tertullian and St. testify to Daniel Messeh Sebastian the regular practice of praying for the souls of the departed. Cale Quiram Dominic Savio Tertullian justified the practice based on custom and tradition. THIRD ROW All this demonstrates that Christians believed their prayers could somehow have a positive effect on the souls of departed Brody Stonecipher Matthew believers. Closely connected to the ancient practice of praying for Carter Logsden the dead is the belief in an explicit state called purgatory. Disha Chawla Clare Mary Beth Franey Katherine of Alexandria The New Testament hints at a purification of believers after death. Tony Hoffman For example, St. Paul speaks of being saved, "but only as through Tirth Panchal Pius X fire" (1 Corinthians 3:15). Over time, many Church Fathers further Julian Torres John Bosco developed the concept of a purgation of sins through fire after death. Annika Scott Perpetua The whole concept of purgatory and a purification process before Lucas a soul enters the full presence of God is actually a confirmation on Grosse-Perdekamp Lawrence just how merciful and compassionate our God is—and how much Logan Kurtz Isadore the Farmer He desires every soul to live with Him for eternity. To be in God’s presence a person must be ready, that is, “presentable” for the FOURTH ROW Almighty. Very few other than the Blessed Mother are totally Paul Lehman Patrick presentable to our all-perfect and holy God. Our loving God, Jasmine Waite Mother Frances Cabrini therefore, has provided a purification process, called purgatory, to Sylvia Wither-Sickles Sylvia make every one presentable to Him. Hadley Peters Bernadette So, purgatory is a good thing. All those in purgatory are on their James George way to heaven, and our prayers and charitable works could help Addy Klein Lucy them get there soon. Aidan Beckett Stephen Fr.
