Grâce à des images rarement projetées, l’héritage d’un des plus grands artistes du xxe siècle revit en ciné-concert. En écho à l’exposition que la Philharmonie lui consacre, une sélection d’extraits d’œuvres inoubliables projetées sur grand écran est accompagnée par de la musique composée par Chaplin lui-même, mais aussi par Brahms et Wagner. Doué d’un grand sens mélodique, Charlie Chaplin a parsemé de thèmes d’une redoutable efficacité – confiant à des collaborateurs le soin de les habiller instrumentalement – certains de ses films les plus po- pulaires. D'ailleurs parmi les trois Oscars qu'il a reçus au cours de sa carrière, celui des Feux de la rampe a été décerné pour la musique du film. Grâce aux images projetées, dont certaines inédites, l’héritage d’un des plus grands artistes du xxe siècle revit en ciné-concert. S svojo domiselno komičnostjo in brezčasnim humorjem je Cirkus postal eden najdonosnejših nemih filmov vseh časov. O AVTORJU Charles Spencer Chaplin se je rodil leta 1889 v Londonu. Njegovo otroštvo je zaznamo- vala huda revščina v londonskih slumih; s polbratom Sydneyjem sta več let preživela v delovni sirotišnici. Za igro nadarjeni Chaplin je kmalu unovčil svoje sposobnosti in začel nastopati v plesnih skupinah, varietejih in gledališčih, leta 1906 pa se je pridružil prestižni skupini Freda Karna, pod katerim se je razvil v nadarjenega komedijanta. Med enim od gostovanj skupine v Ameriki je prejel ponudbo za delo in leta 1913 podpisal pogodbo z New York Motion Picture Company. -

AN ANGEL IN HELL: ARTUR BRAUNER AND THE ATTEMPT TO MAKE A GERMAN OSKAR- SCHINDLER-BIOPIC Peter Krämer University of East Anglia, UK Abstract Film Studies tends to deal only with film projects that have been completed and pays particular attention to the work of directors, thus largely ignoring the fact that the vast majority of attempts to make movies fail, and marginalising the crucial role played by scriptwriters and producers in the initiation and development of flm projects. To counter this tendency, this essay examines the unsuccessful attempt, between the 1970s and the early 1990s, of Artur Brauner, one of the leading producers in postwar (West) Germany, to make a biopic about Oskar Schindler. Like the Jewish workers rescued by Schindler, Brauner is a Jewish Holocaust survivor from Poland whose career as a producer has combined mainstream entertainment movies with flms about the Third Reich and especially about the Holocaust. The essay explores the full range of his activities as a producer on the Schindler biopic – ranging from script development and fnancing to negotiations with actors and directors; highlights their transnational dimensions (through the involvement of personnel and co- production partners from France, the UK, Israel, the US, Poland, and the Soviet Union); and explores the refusal of (West) German funding bodies to support this project. At least we’re heading in the right direction. ——Kathryn Bigelow Los Angeles Times February 2, 2010 Abstract This paper explores the cultural inner workings of the film industry and the factors that contribute to the dearth of women employed “behind the scenes” within the Hollywood Production Culture. The Hollywood Production Culture is defined as the cultural norms, practices, and economic influences functioning within Hollywood. Throughout the history of the film industry, women have been underrepresented in positions of power and influence. These positions of power and influence are labeled Above-The-Line positions and include producers, writers, directors, and cinematographers. This study focuses on finding and analyzing the contributing factors of the gender disparity in Above-The- Line positions. The methodology used to explore the gender disparity within Hollywood Production Culture is an interdisciplinary approach, using textual analysis of industry literature, scholarly studies, and data analysis. 85 Introduction and Background The 2010 Academy Awards was host to a historical event—for the first time in its over 80-year history, the top directorial honor was granted to a woman. Kathryn Bigelow was only the fourth woman to be nominated, and at the 2010 Academy Awards, she became the first ever to win for her Iraqi war film, The Hurt Locker.
