EVENT REPORT MAY 3-6, 2017 FROM OUR CEO OUR FROM LETTER A For the frst time in history, the world’s population is 50% urban; by 2050, our cities are predicted to contain 70% of the world’s population. Although growth provides many exciting opportunities to innovate and improve our quality of life, we must recognize the challenges we face in areas such as energy, pollution, transportation, health, inclusion, in- vestment, growth, and the economy, to name but a few. This makes our cities the best places to innovate and improve our quality of life. At Smart Cities New York, our motto is Powered by People, and for good reason. The path forward can only be found by harnessing those among us who have the insight and drive to design and build civic-mind- ed technologies. And, we are all eager to work to build smarter, safer, more inclusive urban environments. From New York to Dubai, new ideas and investment opportunities abound, and we encourage you to make them. Smart Cities NYC ’17 showcased solutions from MIT, Columbia, NYU, and Harvard who taught us new ways to join public and private in effective partnerships. Many innovative companies and startups showcased their ideas and solutions, and are looking for partners for deployment. We encourage you to reach out and build relationships. We are fortunate to have so many talented, driven, and innovative partic- ipants who understand that challenges lead to opportunities. Throughout Smart Cities NYC 2017, we worked with our partners from around the world to challenge paradigms, highlight solutions, and champion those who are dedicating their lives to solving the problems facing our cities. NOW IS THE Jerry Hultin TIME TO ACT. Chairman and CEO Global Futures Group Smart World Productions Fmr. Under Secretary, I want to thank all of you who joined us at Smart Cities NYC 2017 at U.S. Navy the Brooklyn Navy Yard. And, bring friends! POWERED BY PEOPLE POWERED BY Smart Cities NYC ’17: Powered by People (SCNYC17) was the frst show of its kind to focus on the importance of citizen participation in making cities “smart”. A global event, it was also the frst to raise attention to the chal- lenges and opportunities for New York City to embrace urban innovation and transform itself into the city of tomorrow. This four-day event brought together global mayors, CTOs, CIOs, civil society organizations, non-prof- its, the private sector, and thought leaders from around the world for dis- cussions and debates on the key issues confronting modern urban leaders in their efforts to improve the quality of life in their cities. SCNYC17 was rich in substance and intellectual rigor, covering a broad range of critical topics including: public safety, health, transportation, as well as other modern government services: technology for the disabled; cybersecurity; the use of big data in managing urban assets; fostering in- novation through urban labs; harnessing a new creative class through en- trepreneurship ecosystems; the future of automation and the impact on employment; urban planning and design to address new methods of com- muting and a transient economy; training tech talent for the future - wheth- er through STEAM at an early age or empowering those re-entering the workforce, and more. In addition to the conference, SCNYC17 included side events such as the Urban-X and Smart Cities NYC Demo Day, 25 workshops from groups like NUMA-France, the International Cleantech Network, C40, the New York Academy of Sciences, MIT, Harvard, Columbia and multiple city agencies. Additionally there were excursions such as a visit to the NYPD Command Center to interactive experiences featuring Microsoft’s Holo- Lens. To ensure that citizens are inspired by the future of innovation, SCNYC17 was working with NYCHA, the Brooklyn Navy Yard, Microsoft’s Tech Job Academy, New York Academy of Sciences, the Department of Education and the United War Veterans Council on a Saturday program called STEAM Ahead to host a job fair and talk about workforce develop- ment and STEAM education. “SMART CITIES explored and highlighted the pioneering THE urban solutions that are defning and transforming cities EXPERIENCE around the world.
