Markos Vamvakaris : The Man and the Bouzouki. The bouzouki was a disreputable instrument but he paved its path to glory. He spent many years, first as a stevedore in the port of Piraeus and then as a butcher in the slaughterhouse. During this time he fell in love with a tigress, his first wife, he learnt to smoke hashish and to play the 'sacred' instrument: 'I had a great passion. My life was all bouzouki. It took me over - but it also took me up in the world, way up ...' This is the first ever translation into English of the autobiography compiled by Angeliki Vellou Keil in 1972. It opens a window onto a time of extraordinary creativity in the history of Greek music, an explosion of songwriting in the interwar period. Its composers wrote about themselves and each other, the rituals of hashish smoking and the landmarks of a now vanished city. Markos the repentant sinner and living legend, looks back at childhood idylls in Syros, the arrival of the Asia Minor refugees, the terrible years of the Nazi Occupation, the ceaseless love affairs and disappointments, and the triumphs of the bouzouki. He offers a rare insight into the lives of toiling workers and the lowlife of one of the world's most ancient ports, where East meets West. Out of this melting pot he produced the classic songs that Greeks of all ages still love and know by heart. -

Catering to the increasing scholarly and general public interest in the role commercial recordings had on musical traditions from the early twentieth century, that production became a landmark in the revised appreciation of Sephardic music prior to the rapid chain of events leading to the dissolution of the traditional communities that maintained this music. -

Acting the Nation Women on the Stage and in the Audience of Theatre in the Late Ottoman Empire and Early Turkish Republic Cora Skylstad TYR 4590 – Master’s thesis in Turkish Studies Area Studies of Asia, the Middle East and Africa Department of Cultural Studies and Oriental Languages UNIVERSITY OF OSLO October 2010 ii iii Abstract In the first decades of the 20th century, the public position of actresses underwent a radical transformation in Turkey. While the acting profession had long been commonly regarded as unsuitable for Muslim women and had been monopolized by women belonging to the non- Muslim minorities, in the 1920s the Muslim actress was not only legitimized but in fact embraced by the state as a model for Turkish women. In the works of Turkish and Ottoman theatre history, the emergence of Muslim actresses has been given some attention, but it has not been studied from a critical perspective inspired by theoretical questions. Moreover, the process of legitimization of Muslim women as theatre audience, which took place prior to the legitimization of the actresses, has been ignored. The present thesis seeks to develop a better understanding of these developments by approaching them as part of social and political history, while drawing inspiration from an interdisciplinary field of scholarship on gender and theatre. The time period studied begins with the late era of the Ottoman Empire and ends with the early years of the Turkish Republic, covering a time span of more than fifty years. In order to capture the complexities of the subject, a wide array of written sources, including memoirs, interviews, theatre reviews, books and a theatre play, are included in the analysis. -

PRINCIPLES OF MUSIC COMPOSING: The Phenomenon of Rhythm | XIII | muzikos komponavimo pRincipai: ritmo fenomenas Kalliopi Stiga Rhythm and Greekness in the Cities of Mikis Theodorakis Four notes and a rhythm, the syrtaki rhythm, were identified with Mikis Theodorakis and Greek music. Figure 1. Zorba's dance It is the melodic-rhythmic theme of Zorba’s dance, which was immortalized in the homonym film “Zorba the Greek” (1964) by the prominent Cypriot filmmaker Michael Cacoyannis. This dance is rooted in traditional Greek music. Namely, the syrtaki dance – a modern and cheerful dance inspired by Theodorakis – emerges from the combination of two Greek folk dances, the hasapiko dance1 and the hasaposerviko dance2. The use of traditional and popular Greek music rhythms is frequent in Theodorakis’ work. The composer was initiated into Greek traditional music during his childhood while he was acquainted with Greek popular music later on, in 1947 during his exile in Ikaria Island, where he heard for the first time the most famous rebetiko song “Captain Andreas Zepos” (Καπετάν Ανδρέα Ζέπο) by Yannis Papaioannou written in syrtos3 rhythm (2/4). Theodorakis was particularly sensitized early on to the concept of the rhythm. During his adolescence, in the early 1940s, he studied thoroughly and he is deeply influenced by the texts of an important Modern Greek poet Costis Palamas4 (1859–1943). He agreed with the poet’s belief that “the rhythm in poetry – the rhythmic walking – symbolizes the rhythm that governs the Universe” (Theodorakis, 1986, vol. 1: 140–141) and moreover, Theodorakis adds the concept of Harmony. “That is, the rhythmic Harmony, which one realizes through the motion of the stars when gazing into the celestial vault.” (Theodorakis, 1986, vol. -

Through Praed’s style, they attack cultural canons within the Arab World, and they present a fresh mix towards Europe. Here is a different take on Exotica. From the Norient book Seismographic Sounds (see and order here). Praed, the duo of Lebanese Raed Yassin and Swiss Paed Conca, perform popular media sounds from the Arab world with techniques from experimental music. On their first CD The Muesli Man (2009), we hear lots of samples: gunshots, someone screaming, music from Egyptian films, a speech by iconic president Gamal Abdel Nasser, Arabic pop music from the 1980s, electric bass, virtuoso clarinet playing, electronica sounds – all held together through a wide range of editing and manipulation techniques. On their second release Made in Japan (2011), Yassin sings over a sample of Egyptian pop-star Mahmoud El Husseini while a bathroom-pipe is bursting. Japanese voices, screaming, and dub-grooves are interlaced. All of that is put into a grinder and mixed with prepared double- and E-bass, varying playing techniques on the clarinet and scratches from record players and tape recorders.
