(Fredrika Bremer, The H-Family. Edited with introduction and commentary by Åsa Arping, Department of Comparative Literature, Göteborg University, Box 200, SE-405 30 Göteborg, Sweden.) Skrifter utgivna av Svenska Vitterhetssamfundet. Svenska författare. Ny serie, XXVI+242 pp., Stockholm. ISBN 91-7230-094-9 Famillen H*** (The H-Family) appeared in the second and third part of Teck- ningar utur hvardagslifvet (Sketches from Every-day Life), published anon- ymously in 1830–31. This début was an immediate success and the writer’s identity was soon revealed. Here Fredrika Bremer (1801–1865) presented the reader to a literary landscape previously unknown in Sweden. Ordinary con- temporary milieus and characters are unerringly described through a quick prose easily varying from elevated to quiet and humouristic. Alongside of and often in opposition to romanesque conventions this book offered a new kind of realistic account. For the first time Famillen H*** now appeares in a critical edition. The text, based on the first edition, is preceded by an introduction presenting the creation and reception of the novel, and is followed by a commentary. © Svenska Vitterhetssamfundet ISBN 91-7230-094-9 Svenska Vitterhetssamfundet c/o Svenska Akademiens Nobelbibliotek Box 2118, SE-103 13 Stockholm http://svenska.gu.se/vittsam.html Printed in Sweden by Bloms i Lund Tryckeri AB Lund 2000 Inledning Det är besatt, besatt, besatt! In tracing the expansion of population through the Mississippi Valley to the American West, the student must give careful considera tion to the part played by immigrants from the Scandinavian countries. Interest in the history of the immigration of this group and in its contributions to American life has taken various forms. The most important of these are efforts in the direction of intensive research and the collection and publica tion of the materials essential to such research. Source material abounds; yet, owing to the fact that men whose lives have spanned almost the entire period of the main movement of Norwegian immigration are still living, no clear-cut line can be traced between primary and secondary materials. Further more, the comparatively recent date of Scandinavian immigra tion to the United States has resulted in delaying the work of collecting materials relating to the movement. Recently, how ever, through the work of Flora, Babcock, Evjen, Anderson, Nelson, Norelius, Holand, and others, considerable progress has been made.2 Editors of newspapers and magazines have proved assiduous in collecting and publishing accounts of pioneers; 1 Translated and edited, with introduction and notes, by Theodore C.

WHY IS THERE NO CHURCH UNITY AMONG NORWEGIAN LUTHERANS IN AMERICA? Ulrik Vilhelm Koren [As printed in the Clergy Bulletin, V. 12:1, pp. 3-6; V. 12:2, pp. 19-24; V. 12:3, pp. 39-42; V. 12:4, pp. 49-52; V. 12:5, pp. 63-64. (Printed in Kirkentidende in 1905, and in Koren’s Samlede Skrifter, pp. 454-498 – translation by C. U. Faye)] Answer to Mr. Ulvestad and to many others. Mr. M. Ulvestad has, in several periodicals in January of this year, written an article with the heading, “Church Union,” and asks: “What separates Norwegian Lutherans in America?” He subscribes to what has often been said, that “most people do not know what is at issue in the conflict.” He says that “there are some (among the uninitiated) who believe, that this is merely a conflict among the leaders, while the majority do not know what they are to believe.” He says that “what is needed is a straight-forward explanation and comparison of the doctrinal differences that are said to exist.” He says that he has diligently tried to find the difference between us, especially by reading our respective periodicals, but has found no essential difference. He “has come to the conclusion, that it is our Christianity, and not our doctrinal concepts, that has suffered the most.” He says that “if this were the main issue about which there was disagreement, namely, the way to life in God and the way to salvation, then there would be no talk of uniting. One cannot compromise the Word of God.
