I grew up in Kriva Palanka in the located in the Northeast Osogovo Region. I moved to the USA when I was 18 years old to pursue higher education, and since then I have lived and travelled all over the country. I hope that this small guide is helpful to anyone looking to learn a little bit of Macedonian! If you have any questions, you can contact me here. HISTORY OF MACEDONIAN LANGUAGE Macedonian language is a South Slavic language, spoken as a first language by around two million people, principally in the Republic of Macedonia and the Macedonian diaspora, with a smaller number of speakers throughout the transnational region of Macedonia. It is the official language of the Republic of Macedonia and an official minority language in parts of Albania, Romania and Serbia. Ancient Macedonian, an independent Indo-European language of was spoken in at least part of Macedonia in the fifth and fourth centuries B.C. and presumably both earlier and later. Although efforts at the creation of a Macedonian literary language date from the nineteenth century, it was not until 2 August 1944 that Macedonian was formally declared the official language of the Republic of Macedonia. The standardization of Literary Macedonian proceeded rapidly after its official recognition, in part because an inter-dialectal koine was already functioning. There are about 23 dialects. There are a number of other online resources for learning Macedonian. Here are a few that I found very helpful: ✴ Victorian School of Languages Macedonian materials (free) ✴ E-textbooks from Macedonia for K-12 (free access) ✴ For the linguists, here are some grammar tutorials (free) and morphology info ✴ University of Toronto Macedonian has a free course (well, the online files are free, but they accompany a textbook is available for purchase from amazon.com) ✴ Macedonian Language E-learning Center offers free resources 1. LESSON 1: THE MACEDONIAN ALPABETH he Macedonian alphabet is a form of the Cyrillic alphabet. It consists of 31 letters and each letter corresponds to a single sound. There are 5 vowels: A, E, I, O, U. The remaining sounds Tare consonants. The stress in the Macedonian language in all one-syllable, two-syllable and three-syllable words falls on the first syllable. In the case when a word has more than three syllables the stress falls on the third syllable from the end of the word (antepenultimate syllable). Italics are used for the transliteration of Macedonian Cyrillic orthography, which is mostly phonemic. The citation form for verbs is the third singular present unless otherwise indicated.
