Dabney, Melina Kristine (BA/MA Film Studies) Re-mixing Old Character Tropes on Screen: Kerry Washington, Viola Davis, and the New Femininity Thesis directed by Professor Melinda Barlow While there is a substantial amount of scholarship on the depiction of African American women in film and television, this thesis exposes the new formations of African American femininity on screen. African American women have consistently resisted, challenged, submitted to, and remixed racial myths and sexual stereotypes existing in American cinema and television programming. Mainstream film and television practices significantly contribute to the reinforcement of old stereotypes in contemporary black women characters. However, based on the efforts of African American producers like Shonda Rhimes, who has attempted to insert more realistic renderings of African American women in her recent television shows, black women’s representation is undergoing yet another shift in contemporary media. -

(Campbell, 2013, p. 4) As Prometheus stole fire from the gods, so feminists will have to steal the power of naming from men, hopefully to better effect. (Dworkin, 1981, p. 17) 3 Abstract When SlutWalk marched onto the protest scene, with its focus on ending victim blaming and slut shaming, it carried the promise of a renewed feminist politics. -

Women of Meghalaya and Kyriarchy
Pramana Research Journal ISSN NO: 2249-2976 WOMEN OF MEGHALAYA AND KYRIARCHY Puspita Das1, Ayuta Mohanty2* 1Professor, College of Community Science, Central Agricultural University, Tura,Meghalaya. Email- [email protected] 2Lecturer in English, C.V. Raman College of Engineering, Bhubaneswar. Email- [email protected] ABSTRACT: The most common word that comes to our mind when we hear the word oppression is ‘patriarchy’. But one more term that is also associated with oppression is ‘Kyriarchy’. Coined in 1992, it tries to include the people who are privileged in one aspect and oppressed in another aspect. This pattern of being privileged and oppressed at the same time has attracted the critics to analyse such situation. Similar situation can be found in the state of Meghalaya. Meghalaya comprises of various tribes and is matrilineal and matrilocal in nature. So in a way, the women of Meghalaya are privileged than women across the country. But they are also oppressed by the men of their tribes. This combination of being both suppressed and privileged makes them an ideal example of ‘Kyriarchy’. This paper analyses the condition and situation of women of Meghalaya under the scanning lens of Kyriarchy. The privileges that they have has been analysed and the suppression that they suffer simultaneously has also been highlighted. KEYWORDS- Kyriarchy, Meghalaya, Women, Oppressed, Privileged INTRODUCTION: The word ‘Kyriarchy’ was coined by Elisabeth Schussler Fiorenza in 1992 “to describe her theory of interconnected, interacting and self-extending systems of domination and submission, in which a single individual might be oppressed in some relationship and privileged in others”1. -

Violence with Serious Psychotraumatic Consequences
The methods of the pornography industry are identical to those of human trafficking networks Osez le Feminisme Le Monde, December 21, 2020 http://osezlefeminisme.fr/pornography-the-alibi-for-hatred-torture-and-organized-crime/ Pornography has no legally binding definition. However, this term hides a long list of violent and abusive acts which are severely punishable under criminal codes and by international conventions: torture, rape, abuse of vulnerability, pimping, human trafficking, incitement to sexist and racist hatred, sexist and racist insults… Words can be powerful, they can provide impunity for criminals. All over the world, lawsuits and trials are multiplying and survivors are speaking out. In France, in September, a preliminary investigation against the pornography site “Jacquie and Michel” for rape and pimping was opened by the Paris Public Prosecutor’s Office. In October, four French pornographers, producers for “Jacquie et Michel” and Dorcel were indicted for rape, pimping and human trafficking. What is now referred to as the “porn industry”, with billions of dollars in profits worldwide (219,985 videos are viewed every minute on Pornhub), actually conceals large-scale criminal networks of pimping and human trafficking. The methods used by the porn video production industry are sophisticated and identical to those used by human trafficking networks: grooming, trust-building, submission through rape, exploitation, coercion, and reversal of guilt. It is based on the age-old and misogynistic myth of a woman as a sexual object who is eager for self-destruction. Violence with serious psychotraumatic consequences The filming of sexual acts under economic and psychological coercion, sexual assault and rape, even acts of torture and barbarism are the daily reality of the pornocriminal system. -
