Dem schlafenden Riesen im Westen der Stadt wurde denkmalgerecht neues Leben eingehaucht. Von 1957 bis 1999 war der „Zoo“ Premierenkino der Berlinale: Stars wie Dustin Hoffman, Sophia Loren, Gregory Peck oder Billy Wilder zeigten hier ihre Filme. Jetzt wird er wieder Spielort der Berlinale. Einem Meister des sozialkritischen Films, Ken Loach, gebührt der diesjährige Goldene Ehrenbär. Mit einer Hommage zeichnen wir das filmische Lebenswerk des Regisseurs nach, der mit Empathie, Kritik und Humor dem europäischen Film ein soziales Gewissen gegeben hat. Und der Teddy Award gönnt sich die ganz große Oper: Die Verleihung des queeren Filmpreises findet erstmals in der Komischen Oper statt. Mit Wes Andersons Grand Budapest Hotel wird die 64. Berlinale mit einem Film voller visueller Pracht starten. Die Geschichte schlägt einen großen Bogen von der Zeit um 1914 bis zum Auftritt der Nazis 1933. Nur zwölf Jahre später lag die Welt in Schutt und Asche. Aber nicht alles wurde zerstört. Die unvorstellbaren Mengen von Kunst und Wertgegenständen, die von den Nazis geraubt worden sind, wurden dann von den „Monuments Men“ aufgespürt. Im gleichnamigen Film ist George Clooney, der auch Regie führte, einer von ihnen. Kaum war der Film in Babelsberg, im Harz und in Sachsen-Anhalt abgedreht, fanden Steuerfahnder mehr als 1.000 verschollen geglaubte Kunstwerke in der Wohnung eines Nachkommen des damaligen Kunsthändlers Gurlitt. So aktuell kann Kino sein. Mit über 400 Filmen, zehn Sektionen und fast 500.000 Kinobesuchen ist die Berlinale das inzwischen größte Publikumsfilmfestival der Welt. Klingt gut. Ist gut. Die Preisverleihung findet am Samstag, dem 15. Februar 2014 im Berlinale Palast statt. Als Abschlussfilm wird der Gewinner des Goldenen Bären gezeigt.     A Survey of Shakespearean Performances in Japan from 2001-2010 Kosai Ishihara Osamu Hirokawa 1. An Overview of Shakespearean Performance in Japan We are going to survey the performances on Shakespeare in this century. The Shakespeare Institute of Komazawa University has been compiling data on Shakespeare in Japan. We would like to exhibit how widely Shakespeare has been appreciated by people in and around Tokyo on the evidence of the performance records for the ten years from 2001 to 2010, based mainly upon the data of Nihon Sheikusupia Soran ( A General Survey of Shakespeare in Japan), composed by Takashi Sasaki, a member of The Komazawa University Shakespeare Institute. *(Table 1) The annual number of performances in the 1980s came to around 20-30 but increased to about 60-70 in the 1990s. The peak year of the 1990s was 1991, when the Fifth World Shakespeare Congress was held in Tokyo; in the autumn the Japan Festival of Great Britain was held in Great Britain. A total of 93 plays was performed that year. As the graph above shows, the lower rate of the early 2000s peaked again in 2002. In the recent years more than 100 Shakespearean productions have been staged. The fi gures include all performances, varying - 1 - Kosai Ishihara, Osamu Hirokawa from small amateur groups to large professional companies, from authentic British productions to traditional Japanese productions. Most of the plays staged in Japan are performed in Japanese, sometimes highly adapted. Once Shakespeare’s plays are translated into Japanese they are no longer strictly Shakespearean, since the structural differences between English and Japanese detract from his beautiful rhyme, accent, rhythm and imagery.

    Berlinale 2008 By Ron Holloway Spring 2008 Issue of KINEMA 58th BERLINALE 2008 Box Office Bonanza Will it ever end? During his seven years as Berlinale director, Dieter Kosslick’s festival tenure is annually boosted by success at the box office. Following the close of the 58th Berlin International Film Festival (7-17 February 2008), bonanza statistics were promptly released to the press. The 58th Berlinale recorded an overall audience of 430,000, of which some 230,000 purchased tickets, thus exceeding last year’s record by more than 6,000. The number of visiting film professionals (exhibitors, sales agents, industry representatives) increased to 20,000 from 125 countries, topping last year’s total of 19,155. The number of accredited journalists rose to 4,105. The sum of public screenings also rose to 1,256, compared with 934 screenings in 2007. Only the number of films participating in this year’s official programs dipped in comparison tolast year - down from 396 to 383 - but even this adjustment apparently made some Berlinale entries all the more attractive. The buzz at the Berlinale? Of particular interest were the ”EFM Industry Debates” held in the Marriott Hotel for three days in the middle of the festival. A hundred participants registered for the panel discussions on the challenges and opportunities of ”Digital Film Distribution” in the not too distant future. Another press headliner was a calculation on the ”monetary worth” of this year’s Berlinale, reckoned at circa €17.2m, or around US$ 26m. The sum includes the input by the German government (country, state, city), estimated at € 6.2m, or approximately US$ 9.3m.

    For your cultural life in Hiroshima かき氷 Kakigôri (shaved ice) Ice was once a rare commodity in summer, only available to the aristocracy who could pay for its transport from northern mountain areas. Japanese travelers overseas in the late 19th century discovered ice cream. It was not long before it became possible to produce ice and one of today’s favorite Japanese summer treats – kakigôri, shaved ice. Wherever you go in Japan in summer, you will see small red, white and blue flags bearing the character for ‘ice’ (氷). This may mean that ice-cream is on sale, but there will almost certainly be kakigôri. You will find it at convenience stores (sometimes ready packed), on beaches, and at festivals, and many people make their own at home. It’s very simple dish. Ice is finely shaved using either an old-style hand-cranked machine, rather like a meat mincer, or an electric ice-shaver. Sweet syrup is added to the small mountain of shavings, and it’s eaten with a spoon. Popular flavors include strawberry, melon, grape, lemon, ‘blue Hawaii’, and matcha (green tea). The syrup gradually soaks into shavings as they melt, leaving sweet iced water by the end. Tsubu-an azuki paste from the large kintoki-azuki bean is also sometimes added to make uji-kintoki, with a sprinkling of matcha powder. Condensed milk or ice cream can also be added.
