(93 mins.; debuting) PERCENTAGES TO BANK ON The Going Rate (Calculated for a film budgeted anywhere from $5 million-$15 million.) EUROPE It has been dicey for indie film producers and distributors battling for U.K. 7%-10% fees around the globe, but there are fledgling signs that things are improving. GERMANY 6%-8% The glut of product that clogged the release pipe is abating, though FRANCE 5%-7% that’s because a number of outfits have gone to the wall or are trying to ITALY 3%-5% avoid that fate by pulling in their horns and producing fewer movies. SPAIN 3%-5% It’s still hard for indie fare — including critically lauded pics like “The SCANDINAVIA 1.5%-2.5% Hurt Locker” or “The Last Station” — to secure screens in the U.S. without the backing of a Hollywood behemoth, but the situation abroad is even NETHERLANDS 1.5%-2.5% trickier. Until the ad markets bounce back in foreign territories, broadcast - ers will be cautious about picking up more pics than they need or paying ASIA more for them than they have to. JAPAN 2%-10% In any case, folks in places as far-flung as France, India and Korea tend AUSTRALIA 2%-4% to prefer their own homegrown fare (and if they don’t, government regula - SOUTH KOREA 1.5%-2% tion helps nudge them in that direction). Still, China is being ever so grad - ually pried open and the taste for American films, at least of the block - EASTERN EUROPE buster variety, is definitely whetted in that territory. RUSSIA 2%-4% Elsewhere, too, international audiences have been flocking to American franchises which the Hollywood majors are increasingly betting the house on. ALL OTHERS 1.5% Our Going Rate chart suggests the percentage of an American film’s budget that can be made up in foreign sales for all rights in key territories. OTHER TERRITORIES Obviously there are disparities, and for a pic that, for whatever reason, is INDIA, CHINA, MIDEAST, 4% really hot, competitive bidding can drive the price up. Still, for most sellers TURKEY, SOUTH AFRICA it’s still a slog.
