Saint Charles Parish Community 880 Tamarack Avenue • San Carlos • California • 94070 SAINT CHARLES PARISH COMMUNITY 880 TAMARACK AVENUE • SAN CARLOS • CALIFORNIA • 94070 www.stcharlesparish.org The Transiguration of the Lord August 6, 2017 Saint John Vianney – Feast Day August 4 Patron Saint of Parish Priests Jean-Baptiste-Marie Vianney was born on May 8, 1786 in Dardilly, France and was baptized the same day. He was the fourth of six children born of Matthieu and Marie Vianney. John was raised Catholic in a family that helped the poor and housed St. Benedict Joseph Labre when he made his pilgrimage to Rome. In 1790, when the anticlerical Terror phase of the French Revolution forced priests to work in se- crecy or face execution, young Vianney believed that priests were heroes. He continued to believe in the bravery of priests and received his First Communion catechism instructions in private by two nuns who had lost their convents due to the Revolution. At the age of 13, John made his First Communion and prepared for his Confirmation in secrecy. In 1802, the Catholic Church was reestablished in France and religious freedom was allowed. In 1809, John was drafted into Napoleon Bonaparte’s army and his ecclesiastical studies were halted. Within days after joining the military, John became ill and was hospitalized. When he recovered, he met a young man who assisted him in deserting into the mountains. Here he took the name Jerome Vincent and opened a school for children in the nearby village of Les Noes. He remained in the village until he was given amnesty in late 1810. He returned to Ecully and resumed his ecclesiastic studies. He attended a seminary and was ordained on August 12, 1815. He celebrated his first Mass the following day and was appointed assistant to Fr. Balley in Ecully, France. He spent 12 plus hours daily attempting to bring his flock back to God. His fame spread until people started coming to him from long distances in 1827. From then on it is believed that he worked with up to 20,000 pilgrims each year. The devil came often to John Vianney, tempting him, disturbing his rest, intruding on his prayers and discouraging him from serving his people. By 1853, Fr. Vianney had attempted to leave his parish four times in order to become a monk. Each time he returned to his calling as a parish priest. After forty-one years of an incredible life of fasting, prayer and service to the faithful in Ars, he died on August 4, 1859. (August 4th is now his feast day.) John Vianney was canonized a saint in 1925 by Pope Pius XI, after many miracles were attributed to his intercession. This amazing saint overcame many obstacles to fulfill his calling, to love and serve God. Please pray for the intercession of St. John Vianney for all priests, and for an increase of vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life within our Archdiocese of San Francisco and all over the world. ——————————————— Prayer of St. John Vianney I love You, O my God, and my only desire is to love You until the last breath of my life. I love You, O my infinitely lovable God, and I would rather die loving You, than live without loving You. I love You, Lord, and the only grace I ask is to love You eternally… My God, if my tongue cannot say in every moment that I love You, I want my heart to repeat it to You as often as I draw breath. CHARLES CHURCH AUGUST 6, 2017 Reflecting on God’s Word In 1977, the United States launched twin space probes, Voyager I and Voyager II. For the past several years they have been traveling out into our solar system, gathering data and transmitting photographs of the outer planets and more. Recently, Voyagers I and II traversed the outer limits of our solar system and passed into the reaches of deep space where there exist a billion suns, each spinning with planets of its own. Sometimes more knowledge only brings more questions, more mystery, and shadows that dim the light. In spite of all the new understanding bestowed by the Voyagers, I find myself trying to comprehend what “God” means in such a cosmic universe. Certainly God is not simply someone watching “from a distance,” as the song suggests. And what does it mean to say that God has counted the hairs on my head, or knows my deepest needs, or is aware of my personal sins? The Voyagers have made me rethink what “God” means, and I have not found any easy answers. I live now in a cloud of greater mystery. Whatever happened to Jesus atop Mount Tabor, one might wonder even more about what happened to Peter and James and John. A universe of light may have shone forth in Jesus, but the three gathered there with him found themselves in the shadow of a cloud. In the end they came out with new questions about what it means to rise from the dead. Sometimes an experience of the holy brings us to confusion and greater uncertainty, not less, and to greater darkness rather than to light. Sometimes the holy person knows less, not more. Perhaps learning to live peaceably with such mystery is the key to greater holiness. —Rev. Joseph J. Juknialis -Copyright © 2012, World Library Publications. All rights reserved ? ? ? ? • The Holy See
The Holy See HOLY MASS ON THE OCCASION OF THE HOLY FATHER'S 85TH BIRTHDAY HOMILY OF HIS HOLINESS BENEDICT XVI Pauline Chapel Monday, 16 April 2012 Your Eminences, Dear Brothers in the Episcopate and in the Priesthood, Dear Brothers and Sisters, On the day of my birth and of my Baptism, 16 April, the Church’s liturgy has set three signposts which show me where the road leads and help me to find it. In the first place, it is the Memorial of St Bernadette Soubirous, the seer of Lourdes; then there is one of the most unusual Saints in the Church’s history, Benedict Joseph Labre; and then, above all, this day is immersed in the Paschal Mystery, in the Mystery of the Cross and the Resurrection. In the year of my birth this was expressed in a special way: it was Holy Saturday, the day of the silence of God, of his apparent absence, of God’s death, but also the day on which the Resurrection was proclaimed. We all know and love Bernadette Soubirous, the simple girl from the south, from the Pyrenees. Bernadette grew up in the France of the 18th-century Enlightenment in a poverty which it is hard to imagine. The prison that had been evacuated because it was too insanitary, became — after some hesitation — the family home in which she spent her childhood. There was no access to education, only some catechism in preparation for First Communion. Yet this simple girl, who retained a pure and honest heart, had a heart that saw, that was able to see the Mother of the Lord and the Lord’s beauty and goodness was reflected in her.

In 1802, the Catholic Church was reestablished in France and religious freedom and peace spread throughout the country. Unfortunately, in 1809, John was drafted into Napoleon Bonaparte's armies. He had been studying as an ecclesiastical student, which was a protected title and would normally have excepted him from military services, but Napoleon had withdrawn the exemption in some dioceses as he required more soldiers. Two days into his service, John fell ill and required hospitalization.

  • Lasallian Saints of Yesterday And… Tomorrow (2021)
This gallery of Lasallian saints represents only some models of human richness ‑ immense and very different ‑ that come from the imitation of a unique model: Christ. They range from very captivating personalities (Miguel Febres-Cordero, Raphaël‑Louis Rafiringa, Exupérien Mas …) to everyday saints (Benilde Romançon, Mutien-Marie Wiaux, Gregorio Bühl ...) and then to those who signed their fidelity to Jesus Christ with their blood (Solomon Le Clerq, Jaime Hilario Barbal Cosán, James Miller…). The known stories of holy Brothers are many, but much more numerous are those stories written only in heaven. These represent a secret treasure, on which the Institute has relied since the time of Saint John Baptist de La Salle. They are an underground spring that flows into the furthest and least known corners of our Institute’s map. It would be good to relate the hidden holiness of the dozens of Brothers who never went beyond an everyday existence and who spent their entire lives unknown and unsung, making the ordinary actions of each day a masterpiece; their total self‑giving and love of God, their nourishment, their sacrifices and self‑restraint, their daily act of worship. 2 This would be important and supply us with a good model, but it is not possible in a booklet like this. It is only right, however, before bringing forward some of the lives known to us, to pay tribute, recognition and praise to all of our unknown saints who have made a precious contribution to the remarkable history of our Congregation. Their holiness, even if it never reaches the altar, has transformed many apparently ordinary lives into masterpieces of grace and has attracted so many blessings on the apostolic labors of all.

  • The Martyrology of the Monastery of the Ascension
The Martyrology of the Monastery of the Ascension Introduction History of Martyrologies The Martyrology is an official liturgical book of the Catholic Church. The official Latin version of the Martyrology contains a short liturgical service the daily reading of the Martyrology’s list of saints for each day. The oldest surviving martyologies are the lists of martyrs and bishops from the fourth-century Roman Church. The martyrology wrongly attributed to St. Jerome was written in Ital in the second half of the fifth century, but all the surviving versions of it come from Gaul. It is a simple martyrology, which lists the name of the saint and the date and place of death of the saint. Historical martyrologies give a brief history of the saints. In the eighth and ninth centuries, St. Bede, Rhabanus Maurus, and Usuard all wrote historical martyrologies. The Roman Martyrology, based primarily on Usuard’s, was first published in 1583, and the edition of 1584 was made normative in the Roman rite by Gregory XIII. The post-Vatican II revision appeared first in 2001. A revision that corrected typographical errors and added 117 people canonized by Pope John Paul II between 2001 and 2004, appeared in 2005.1 The Purpose and Principles of This Martyology The primary purpose of this martyrology is to provide an historically accurate text for liturgical use at the monastery, where each day after noon prayer it is customary to read the martyrology for the following day. Some things in this martyrology are specific to the Monastery of the Ascension: namesdays of the members of the community, anniversaries of members of the community who have died, a few references to specific events or saints of local interest.
