Introducción Cuando una lengua se pierde, generalmente no se pierde del todo, ni menos se pierde de golpe, en un solo momento. Como piezas aisladas, resultado de un naufragio, quedan flotando determinados elementos, sobre todo léxicos, que son recogidos y aprovechados por otra u otras lenguas y en ellas siguen viviendo por siglos. Los ejemplos podrían ser interminables, y de cualquier lengua del mundo antiguo o incluso moderno. Pero no necesitamos salir fuera: ¿quién podría dar cuenta de las lenguas todas que se hablaron en la Península Ibérica antes de la llegada de los romanos? Se perdieron del todo, se dice. Pero aun seguimos usando palabras que los diccionarios etimológicos nos dicen que en su origen fueron preceltas o celtas o iberas o púnicas, etc. Y aun después de la romanización otras lenguas se hablaron en la Península que igualmente se perdieron, aunque dejando vivas en el español actual unas cuantas palabras aisladas, como testimonio de su existencia. Es fácil suponer que ese vocabulario superviviente se refiere a los ámbitos más elementales de la vida humana y a los sectores considerados más primarios de cualquier lengua, como es el mundo vegetal, el reino animal y los objetos materiales de uso común y ordinario; un léxico meramente designativo.
