    PREMIUM WINE CLUB March 2020 2015 Portal del Priorat Gotes Blanques Priorat, Spain Tiny and entirely composed of craggy, jagged and deeply terraced vineyards, Priorat is a Catalan wine-producing region that was virtually abandoned until the early 1990s. Its renaissance came with the arrival of one man, René Barbier, who recognized the region’s forgotten potential. He banded with five friends to create five “Clos” in the village of Gratallops. Their aim was to revive some of Priorat’s ancient Carignan vines, as well as to plant new—mainly French—varieties. These winemakers were technically skilled, well-trained and locally inspired; not surprisingly, their results were a far cry from the few rustic and overly fermented wines already produced. This movement escalated Priorat’s popularity for a few reasons. Its new wines were modern and made with well-recognized varieties, namely old Carignan and Grenache blended with Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. When the demand arrived, scarcity commanded higher prices and as the region discovered its new acclaim, investors came running from near and far. Within ten years, the area under vine practi- cally doubled. One of Catalonia’s emerging superstars, Alfredo Arribas was a nationally renowned architect before shifting his focus to farming and winemaking fifteen years ago. He is known for making some of the most elegant wines in Priorat and Montsant. Alfredo Arribas’ Portal del Priorat estate is composed of about 150 acres in Priorat and 50 acres in Southern Montsant. Many of these vines are on original rootstock and pushing 100 years in age. Gotes translates to “droplets” in Catalan, and as you would expect, like droplets, these wines are all about freshness.

In the nineteenth century, Catalan viticultural produce was exported mainly to Latin America in exchange for the importation of cotton. After the phylloxera crisis, viticulture experienced difficulty in internationalisation until the specialisation in cava, a sparkling wine made in the same way as champagne, kept the wine production going. In the twenty-first century, the specialisation in quality wines is also related to the export to international markets.     ABSTRACT Penedes is a small area near the city of Barcelona. In addition, Penedes is the capital of the Catalan sparkling wine called: cava. Wine tourism plays a key role in this county, specifically the cava field. To be able to understand the importance of wine tourism in this region it is crucial to recognize why the cellars of Penedes enter the tourism sector. This exploratory investigation has three objectives. First, providing a better understanding of the motivations of the cava cellars of Penedes to open to the public. Second, present the most noticeable costs that companies have, when enabling visits. Finally, expose how beneficial is for the firms to get into the tourism industry. For this, the study has been carried out through surveys that were sent to cava professionals in the area of Penedes. Previous literature, which reviews the effects and findings of this study, have been used during the process. Besides, the research has been conducted using a quantitative methodology.     Aglianico From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Aglianico (pronounced [aʎˈʎaːniko], roughly "ahl-YAH-nee- koe") is a black grape grown in the Basilicata and Campania Aglianico regions of Italy. The vine originated in Greece and was Grape (Vitis) brought to the south of Italy by Greek settlers. The name may be a corruption of vitis hellenica, Latin for "Greek vine."[1] Another etymology posits a corruption of Apulianicum, the Latin name for the whole of southern Italy in the time of ancient Rome. During this period, it was the principal grape of the famous Falernian wine, the Roman equivalent of a first-growth wine today.
