TRANSFORMATION THE BREAKTHROUGH WHITLEY STRIEBER On February 10, 1987, one of the most star tling and controversial books of our time was published: Whitley Strieber's Commu nion. In Communion, Whitley Strieber de scribed the shattering effects of an assault from the unknown-what seemed to be an encounter with intelligent nonhuman beings. Transformation is the chronicle of his effort to form a relationship with the unknown reality he has come to call"the visitors." After writing Communion, Whitley Strie ber firmly expected that his encounters with the "visitors" would end. They did not. At first he was desperate and terrified. He struggled frantically to push the visitors out of his life, to prove to himself that they were figments of his imagination, that they were anything but a reality separate from himself. He was finally forced to admit, because of their persistence and the undeniably intelli gent structure of their encounters with him, that they had to be a genuine mystery, an intelligence of unknown nature and origin. Whitley began to challenge his fear of the visitors, to try to confront them with objec tivity, in an effort to gain real insight into their impact on our lives. The more he did this, he found, the deeper and richer his ex perience became. Do the visitors represent a force that has been with mankind throughout history? Has it played an absolutely central role in alter ing human culture? Whitley Strieber and the Paradigm of Doom By Dream’s End, 2007 Part 1 In 1954 nine-year-old Whitley Strieber entered an “Unknown Country” where missing time, ghostly apparitions and visitors claiming to be from outer space are the norm. Many of these childhood memories remained veiled behind a wall of amnesia until much later, though snippets of his bizarre early life experiences stayed within conscious memory. Those memories, and particularly his later “abduction experiences” made famous in his book Communion, would solidify and popularize an emerging mythos: The aliens are here. They are gray. They need to manipulate our genetic material. They are scary as hell but we should love them. The world as we know it is about to end. Originally, I started writing an article about how Strieber was one of the disinformation artists tasked with spreading the “meme” of the little gray men. But as I looked closer, it became very clear that something else was going on. For example, there were many Nazi scientists relocated via Project Paperclip to air force bases in San Antonio, a fact I learned from Strieber’s own website. And that Strieber claimed to have some memories of more earthly, MKULTRA style abuse at one of these airforce bases I also learned on his site.i But one thing Strieber has not written about is that during the years of his “secret school” experiences as a child, one of the central scientists in MKULTRA was stationed at Lackland Airforce Base just ten miles or so from the location of Strieber’s childhood home and the “Olmos Basin” area of San Antonio that figured prominently in his experiences. -

The Development of the Literary Werewolf: Language, Subjectivity and Animal/ Human Boundaries Kaja Franck Submitted to the University of Hertfordshire in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy November 2016 Abstract The werewolf is a stock character in Gothic horror, exemplifying humanity’s fear of ‘the beast within’, and a return to a bestial state of being. Central to this is the idea that the werewolf is, once transformed, without language. Using an ecoGothic approach, this thesis will offer a new approach in literary criticism regarding the werewolf. It argues that the werewolf has become a vehicle for our ambivalence towards the wolf, which itself has become a symbolic Gothic Other. Using interdisciplinary source materials, such as natural histories, fairy tales, and folklore, the notion of the ‘symbolic wolf’ is interrogated, particularly in relation to the dangers of the wilderness. Starting with Dracula, at the end of the nineteenth century, and finishing with an analysis of the contemporary, literary werewolf, this work explores how the relationship between humans and wolves has impacted on the representation of the werewolf in fiction. In particular, it will critique how the destruction of the werewolf is achieved through containing the creature using taxonomic knowledge, in order to objectify it, before destroying it. This precludes the possibility of the werewolf retaining subjectivity and reinforces the stereotype of the werewolf as voiceless. Following the growing awareness of environmentalism during the late twentieth century and, as humanity questions our relationship with nature, clear divides between the animal and the human seem arbitrary, and the werewolf no longer remains the monstrous object within the text. -

Disch http://www.press.umich.edu/titleDetailDesc.do?id=124446 The University of Michigan Press, 2005 The Village Alien If Whitley Strieber isn’t ‹bbing in his new book, Communion (and the book’s cover boldly af‹rms that it is “A True Story”), then it must be accounted the most important book of the year, of the decade, of the cen- tury, indeed, of all time. For what Strieber recounts in Communion is noth- ing less than the ‹rst contact of the human race, in the person of Whitley Strieber, with an ancient alien civilization that abducted him from his cabin in the Catskills on the nights of October 4 and December 26, 1985 (and on various other occasions over the years), and took him aboard a ›ying saucer, where he communicated with a variety of alien beings and was subjected to surgical and sexual indignities. To cover their tracks the alien abductors then implanted false “screen memories” in Strieber’s mind (as they have been doing, he has come to suspect, throughout his life). Only later, in March 1986, did hypnosis reveal the true character of what had happened to him. There have been other, similar reports of UFO sightings and contact with aliens, but Strieber’s is unique in two important respects. First, as he notes himself, “If mine is a real experience of visitors, it is among the deepest and most extensive as yet recorded.” Second, this is the ‹rst time a best-selling author has written his own extensive, ‹rsthand account of a UFO experience.
