BODEGAS VALDESIL Montenovo 2013 BODEGAS VALDESIL Montenovo 2013 the growers In 1885, José Ramón Gayoso planted the first vines of Godello on the small Pedrouzos plot, in the Sil Valley hillsides of pure slate. Gradually, he expanded these small parcels of vines, or ‘pezas’, carefully choosing the best sites around Portela. However, in subsequent years, many of these parcels were sold to other growers, leaving only the Pedrouzos estate in the Gayoso/Prada family. In 2001, the current generation of the family began to buy back the small vineyards which had belonged to their ancestors and today, they have recovered all of those ‘pezas’. their land Spain | Galicia | Valdeorras The Valdeorras valley is nestled in the highest mountains of the Galicia interior. This area is located in the province of Ourense and is home to just 200 hectares of the Godello variety. Bisected by the Sil River and protected by Galicia’s highest mountains, Valdeorras records both the highest and lowest temperatures in Galicia, together with the lowest rainfall of the area (800-1000mm). These factors, and wide differences between day and night temperatures, guarantee good acidity in the white wines. Valdesil is passionate about selecting plots of Godello grown on the rare native black slate found in many outcroppings of Valdeorras. The underlying minerality in all of their wines is a hallmark trait of this special soil type. Montenovo is produced with grapes from the youngest vineyards of the estate together with carefully selected contracted grapes from local growers in several villages, such as Rubiá, A Rúa, Larouco, Petín and O Bolo. the wine 100% Godello Plots are vinified separately according to vineyard and similar soil-types. Grapes are harvested by hand with fermentation using indigenous yeasts in stainless steel vats. No malolactic fermentation. in the glass Bright and zesty, Montenovo is a great ‘wine with training wheels’ to introduce you to the Godello variety. Aromas of lemon-lime, sour green apple, pear and even a bit of honey leap out of the glass. On the palate, more zippy citrus and mineral notes and overall ripe and fresh flavors abound with a sweet - tart finish. www.valkyrieselections.com | www. valdesil.com .

  • Escalada Do Sil Tinto
Escalada do Sil Tinto Like many of the wines Alberto Orte makes, Escalada do Sil is a history project. Intrigued by century-old wine writing that described elegant, aromatic reds from Valdeorras, Alberto sought to replicate this style, veering away from the Godello that is the predominant grape now planted in the region. He found an old-vine parcel, terraced because of its almost cliff-like steepness, at the western end of the appellation adjacent to Ribera Sacra. He found a plot to Mencia, Garnacha Tintorera (Alicante Bouschet), and Merenzao, the grape known as Bastardo in Portugal and Trousseau in the Jura region of France. With these cool-climate, aromatic red varieties, Alberto knew he could bring this history to life with Escalada do Sil – the Staircase to the Sil. Whole cluster fermented with ambient yeasts, the swirling, shimmering aromatics of Escalada do Sil evoke the mountain reds of old Galicia with sanguine and floral notes and a bright, elegant profile. WHAT MAKES THIS WINE UNIQUE?: A history project from Alberto Orte, Escalada do Sil is a elegant, powerfully aromatic red from a region that has become best known for white wine production. Produced from Merenzao (also known as Bastardo, and in France, Trousseau), Mencia and Garnacha Tintorera, this is a blend that evokes a time gone by, when red wines were favored in the region. The fruit all comes from steeply sloped mountain sites that are terraced, requiring hand harvesting only. • A Portela Mencía
A Portela Mencía Mencía, the hallmark grape of northwestern Spain, wears many hats. Ranging from rustic and powerful to high-toned and elegant, it is a variety that clearly reflects its terroir. In this case, A Portela comes from DO Valdeorras, the “gateway to Galicia.” Beloved in ancient times as the only place the Romans found that could grow olives so far north on their supply line, Valdeorras is warmer than its neighbors to the west, shielded by mountains from the cold wet winds of the Atlantic. It’s also cooler than its neighbor Bierzo to the east, similarly shielded from hot Continental winds by mountains. While this area is best known for white wine production (particularly Godello), Valdeorras was, historically, home to beautiful reds as well. Winemaker Alberto Orte produces A Portela from a single vineyard, planted to high elevation slate and granite soils. This combination of elevation, soil and temperate climate makes for an elegant, mineral-driven Mencía that carries both generosity of fruit and spice and also precise, elegant acidity. Truly a unique plot, it’s no wonder that the A Portela subdistrict is nicknamed the Gateway to Heaven! WHAT MAKES THIS WINE UNIQUE?: A Portela showcases the special terroir of Valdeorras in a rare way, as the region is now known primarily for white wine production. Hailing from the A Portela subdistrict where red grapes can ripen on a rounded hiltop, this aromatic Mencía is a perfect introduction to the hallmark red grape of Galicia produced by the hands of a winemaker who wants to keep the past alive.

sustainability Article Connectivity Study in Northwest Spain: Barriers, Impedances, and Corridors Enrique Valero, Xana Álvarez * and Juan Picos AF4 Research Group, Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Engineering, Forestry Engineering College, University of Vigo, Campus A Xunqueira, s/n, 36005 Pontevedra, Spain; [email protected] (E.V.); [email protected] (J.P.) * Correspondence: [email protected]; Tel.: +34-986-801-959 Received: 9 August 2019; Accepted: 14 September 2019; Published: 19 September 2019 Abstract: Functional connectivity between habitats is a fundamental quality for species dispersal and genetic exchange throughout their distribution range. Brown bear populations in Northwest Spain comprise around 200 individuals separated into two sub-populations that are very difficult to connect. We analysed the fragmentation and connectivity for the Ancares-Courel Site of Community Importance (SCI) and its surroundings, including the distribution area for this species within Asturias and in the northwest of Castile and León. The work analysed the territory’s connectivity by using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The distance-cost method was used to calculate the least-cost paths with Patch Matrix. The Conefor Sensinode software calculated the Integral Connectivity Index and the Connectivity Probability. Locating the least-cost paths made it possible to define areas of favourable connectivity and to identify critical areas, while the results obtained from the connectivity indices led to the discovery of habitat patches that are fundamental for maintaining connectivity within and between different spaces. Three routes turned out to be the main ones connecting the northern (Ancares) and southern (Courel) areas of the SCI. Finally, this work shows the importance of conserving natural habitats and the biology, migration, and genetic exchange of sensitive species.
