FEBRUARY 2019 Classic Clatter The Journal of the Classic & Enthusiasts Motor Cycle Club of NSW Inc.

Rest stop at the Scenic Rim Brewery on the 2018 Jampot Rally at Boonah Qld. Noises from the big end.

I was hoping to bring some good news for the beginning of the New Year, but sadly I report that we have not been able to fill several of the key committee positions for 2019. The truth is that our Sydney committee has suffered with a lack of support, resulting now in vacancies for the roles of Magazine Editor and Rally organiser. In order to accommodate the shortfall I have offered to supervise a joint rally with our club and the AJS and Owners Club. However, in order for this rally to go ahead I will need a sub committee to assist with rally preparations, sponsorship, corner Marshalls, raffle ticket sellers, Lead rider and tail rider, back up trailer and driver. The rally is planned for November at Oberon. If you are able to assist with any of these roles or help in anyway with the rally organisation, please email me at [email protected] The Editorial Vacancy means this will be your last, hard copy Clatter, unless someone is willing to take up the role of Editor. If no one is prepared to assist the committee in this role, then our only recourse will be to show all communications on the club’s web site and Facebook sites. Unfortunately, this will be an inconvenience to those without a computer. The role of Editor would require a person who is a good organiser with (Windows) computer (MS Word) and literacy skills and would be willing to give up approx. 3 days per month. The role could be shared to allow for one to prepare the Clatter and one to arrange the proof reading and electronic transfer with the printer and web site. It is the support of the members that makes this a great club, from what I have outlined above, you can see that any one role may be shared between friends. Therefore I ask you to seriously consider volunteering for one of the shared roles above. This reminds me of a satire about Everybody, Anybody, Somebody, Nobody and Someone Else. Everyone knew ‘Someone Else’ was the largest giver of time and money. Whenever there was a need, Everybody, Anybody and Somebody always assumed that Someone Else would make up the difference. Now Someone Else is gone. And the boys all wonder what they will do, No longer can they utter the words; ‘Let Someone Else do it’. If it is going to be done, one of them will have to do it….And I guess most of the time it will be Nobody.” (I truly hope this will not apply to us).

Whether we are working or retired, we all have busy lives to lead. Currently we have a small, dedicated group of members that find the time each month, to manage the club’s affairs, just so we can enjoy all the benefits the club has to offer. It is not fair to overburden these workers with extra committee portfolios when we have a membership of approx. 500. As members of the club, every one of us has a duty to support it’s functions, not just for ourselves, but for the benefit of all. With your help, I would like to put Enthusiasm back into the ‘Classic and Enthusiasts M.C.C’.

We are not just a club, but by name, we are a club of Enthusiasts. Therefore I ask that the Enthusiasts among you accept the challenge to share the workload and fill our vacant positions.

Dave’s diary No. 7 – Clutch adjustment

I recently had an enquiry about a problematic clutch assembly: “Can you tell me the correct adjustment procedure for the five spring nuts. Not sure if I got the springs too tight but when I pull the clutch in now there is a clicking or popping sound from the camplate actuating mechanism. Do you think I need to replace these parts? I have replaced the three ball bearings in the mechanism but is still noisy”.

I recommend, for a smooth operation, you need to check there is no side play with ALL the operating components and check that the components are free to rotate and not too tight. On a Burman B52 and similar Triumph assembly, a dab of grease on the cam plates (A & B), the three balls, both ends of the push rods and on the intermediate and end ball bearing will help. If the cam plates have excessive ball bearing grooves or a sharp lip (edge) in the ball bearing track then these items will need blending or smoothing or replacing. The 5 springs (E) are usually done up so the end of each nut is level with the end of the screw thread.

After fitting and adjusting all the springs. 1) Depress and hold the clutch lever so the clutch plates are free to rotate 2) With the clutch lever depressed, Press down on the kickstart lever and observe the operation of the clutch alloy end plate. 3) If the alloy end plate does not lift evenly as the clutch is rotated via the kickstart lever, then the individual springs (E) will need to be either Section Through Clutch Fitted to a B52 Gearbox tightened or loosened to suit. A: Fixed clutch internal actuating plate. E: Clutch spring B: Clutch internal operating lever. F: Lock nut for clutch rod thrust cup. 4) Release the clutch lever, C: Gearbox mainshaft. G: Thrust cup (in clutch pressure plate) adjust the springs and then D: Clutch Sprocket for clutch rod. repeat the above steps until the clutch operates freely.

Following steps 1-4 on most British bikes will result in a smoother clutch operation.

Occasional Comments

The weather was absolutely perfect for the Sydney North Sunday run to Colo, with 5 starters fronting up at Maccas at Rouse Hill, Ray Gosling and Richard Ementon on classic BMWs, Mark Jolly on a Ducati GTS900, Chris O'Carroll on a Trident and myself on a Thunderbird. With a different group of riders, I was able to lead away on the same route for the first part of the run as for the previous weeks ride. This route through the hills is a favorite being nice and quiet for traffic with good twisty back roads most of the way. Joining the Putty Rd at Bull Ridge road it was only a short run down to Colo then up to Colo Heights the best part of the run up to Colo Heights was spoiled by a particularly slow car crawling around the bends. A group of current and past club members were on their own ride to Colo Heights and Richard stayed with them for a bit of a chinwag as the rest of us headed back to Colo for a feed, this time with no slow cars in the way it was a much better run with Chris and Mark enjoying the ride and disappearing in the distance.

The next run was to Kulnura and I was the only starter to turn up on the Saturday, so I cut it a bit short and just went to Brooklyn for a pie before heading back home. On the way I was going past a school fete when a lady on the gate beckoned me to come in and put the bike on show, so it was that I put the Kawasaki Z1000 on show and picked up a trophy as I wandered around the stalls. Chris O'Carroll mistakenly turned up for the ride on Sunday, not surprisingly there were no other starters then either.

In the shed, my Velocette Venom for some reason lost compression when Alex went to take it out for a ride, it started, went for a few seconds backfired and stopped with no compression when he went to start it. A few hours later when I went to start it, still no compression, so I sat it on compression and left it for the night and intended to work on it the next morning. The next day I dragged it out, kicked it over, compression was back to normal and it started first kick. It’s been fine since so all I can imagine is that there must have been some carbon dislodged which got stuck under the valve and this has cleared up overnight. The Velo also got a new amp meter after the old one has shaken itself to bits over recent months and some new petrol taps after a fuel leak developed.

The recent AGM was again frustrating and a disappointment from the point of view of the lack of people firstly attending the meeting and secondly willing to take on roles in the club. Situations change and people have to at some stage stop doing the roles they may have held for some time. Several roles were not to be taken on again by the incumbents and these were difficult to fill, Secretary, Treasurer and Editor are all important roles and were all without initial takers and it took a bit of convincing for the people to step up to the plate, myself taking on Secretary to add to membership officer and being on the events group. Damien Olbourne taking on the Treasurer position and the Editor role remains vacant. This is clearly less than ideal and the lack of member participation in running the club can be toxic to the club as workloads wear down those few who have the jobs year after year. There needs to be some new blood brought into the committee regularly to invigorate the club otherwise it will just wither and die. I would again call on members, no matter which branch they attend to look at what they can do to help in running the club. Alan Harper

Membership news and views

Renewals for 2019 are coming in at a rate of a few every day.

I have tried sending a reminder to members yet to renew with email addresses, this has been relatively successful, but there are a lot of bounce back emails where the address on file is not correct or up to date and there is the issue of members without an email address on record.

I have also posted a reminder on the club Facebook page.

I would remind members who have not renewed, that if they have a bike on Historic registration with this club, then the bike is technically unregistered as they are not a financial member of the club. There is no grace period here and if involved in an accident the first thing that the insurance company will do is call on us to check your financial status.

The bulk of payments this year seem to be Electronic Fund Transfers and this is much better for the Treasurer as cheques are a real pain now as the banks expect you to load them into their cheque reading machines and many fail to read and have to be done over several times.

Remember if renewing electronically to make sure your payment can be identified as being from you (Name and number) and send an email with your details to the membership Officer so it can be processed, preferably with your completed renewal form.

Each year we have a number of members who choose not to renew, I notice this year there are a number who have said they have sold all their club bikes. Obviously the cheap Historic rego is a major reason for many to join and stay in the club. I am a member of another club where there are quite a few members who no longer ride but still come along in the car to the rides, this is not something we see in the north western Sydney runs.

Please don't send cash in envelopes with your renewal, I have had 2 of these so far with a $50 note with their form, for a start warns against sending cash in the post as it stands a chance of never getting to me and I am not able to send back $3 to you as it would cost more than it's worth to raise a cheque for that amount and post it.

Canny or tight? I have had at least 3 renewals come in envelopes marked as "Card Only" to take advantage of the reduced postage for the Christmas period, one even in a coloured card envelope.

A couple of cheques arrived with no renewal only details scrawled on the back of the cheque or a tiny post it note, this is not helpful in keeping track on payments.

As at the new year there were around 130 members who have not renewed, please get your act together and get your renewals in.

MARCH

23/24 MARCH PRELIMINARY NOTICE RYLSTONE WEEKEND Yes this popular event is on again but this time at the GLOBE HOTEL. Prices and details still to be advised. Reservations: Trevor Murray 42683320

The Organising Committee of the third annual Bulli Motorcycle event is now well into planning a fantastic event. The star of the show will undoubtedly be the Ehret Black Lightning. After being sold overseas by the previous owner it has been brought back to its traditional homeland (at a cost of over $1M !!). It will be seen and HEARD. If you have never heard one of these amazing beasts before I suggest you bring your cameras and ear plugs. Contrary to many beliefs this is NOT an American motorcycle event. from all countries are very welcome to participate. The committee is also planning a very special auction that differs from most auctions you may have attended. Firstly, the owners of the bikes will be there to answer questions AND start their bikes (if advertised as in running order). Secondly, there is no vendor commission payable so you receive whatever the hammer price is. Thirdly, the buyer’s commission is only 5% (so you can afford to go a bit over budget). The auction will be a “prestige” event, so mainly high end machinery (in both price and condition) and the committee reserve the right to accept or decline entries. There is already a Black Shadow entered for auction so start counting your savings or selling those excess machines!! If you have any questions regarding the event, whether it is a bike you want to sell or you want to have a stall, contact Tony (Redfern Motorcycles) or Antony.

On Behalf of the organising Committee

Alyn Vincent.

Library/Technical: Allan was almost (probably should have been) an apology for this meeting due to being in hospital for pneumonia. Reported that the technical work done lately was all on him but was outside his area of expertise. Regalia Bill has plenty of stock and with Christmas coming up, club clothing would make an eminently simple and useful present. Much better than socks and undies.

Rides Jim reported on the year that was. 1st Wednesday and Dam rides were the best attended and remain popular. There is no doubt that our catering crew are responsible for a sizeable chunk of the popularity of our rides. Thank you all. Generally, our rides are well attended and thanks to the member support for them. Off Road ride is now 4 years old and has a core of members committed to them. Members and friends welcome. This coming year the Sunday rides will start earlier in the day. The Debenham ride was very well attended again. Show Day had a wide variety of entrants and strong visitor participation but needs some streamlining for next year.

Ride Awards Ted Conran Memorial Clubman of the Year award to Ron Foye. Ron has been an active member organising rides for about the last 15 years and has marked this time by assisting many club members who now call him a friend as well as a clubmate. Most rides on 1st Wed. on a classic bike was Kevin Brown. Winner of Most Sunday Rides Trophy was Doug Newell. Wayne thanked Jim for all the work he did (and does) behind the scenes throughout the year. Meeting agreed by acclamation.

Dam Ride 21st Third Wednesday of the month Dam Ride destination was to Fitzroy Falls Reservoir. Brian knew a short cut and took 92kms. for a 58 km. trip. Maybe the tourist road was the problem. The forecast miserable weather never eventuated, but the tucker and talk raised a storm. 30 members and friends came with 27 bikes, 17 with club plates and 2 people in a car. on Next ride is 19th December to Cataract Dam. Off-Road Ride Monday 19th was a dry and dusty ride with the usual core and 2 new riders attending. John Morris provided the interest for the day with a flat tyre replaced in record (short) time and inflated in record (slow) time. Monday 3rd Dec. ride saw 6 members set off witnessed by Barry Warden who turned up to see who turned up! Sat. 17th Tortoise ride saw a dozen riders get soaked at Hill 60 which disrupted the ride.

Mon. 26th Coffee Ride Nineteen members journeyed to Jamberoo to catch up with friends. Good to see Ian and Paula Richardson. Half the group were on plated bikes and several members came down from Sydney.

Coming Events **For the latest correct/updated information on rides, look up the club site.** Useful mobile numbers for rides are President Jim 0414379419 or Brian Martin 2019 looks interesting with an interstate ride being planned. Consider attending a rally sometime next year and maybe go somewhere you always wanted to go to but never quite made it there.

General Business: Question from the floor regarding the answer to our request for minutes of the senior committee meeting minutes. Still no answer but small mention in email about role of editor that items may be deleted from clatter for space reasons was interesting. A floor member noted that 10,000 is to be given away by Sydney to charities. Whilst the charities are deserving, it was felt that charity begins at home and members should have a voice when such sums are tossed around. It wasn’t so long ago that fees were raised to cover the cost of the clatter. There seemed to be a need for communication with members and transparency and the move could even be unconstitutional. The vast majority voted for the motion NOT to go ahead at this time & the Sydney Club be made aware of members feelings. Raffle: 1. Sharon Newell 2. Bernie Eather 3. John Baker 4. Judy Conran 5. THE DAM WEDNESDAY RIDES

The Dam Wednesday rides were started about 18 months ago which have turned out to be quite a success, visiting Dams or a place with a body of water, some have boiling water facilities some without, meaning taking a gas stove and the billy necessary, this making the cartage box a bit heavier for brother Wayne's 350 Matchless or 250 Honda. The first of the years Dam visits was to Woronora Dam in January which was the biggest attended. February took us to southern highlands of Fitzroy falls with a slightly reduced number but still encouraging. March was a non-event due to inclement weather. April took us to Berrima, to the old German internment camp there are plaques explaining the story, this outing required the stove and billy. In May our procession meandered its way to Burragorwang Lookout which is the upper reaches of the Warragamba Dam, Rahna Elliot was volunteered to supply the boiling water for this outing. The winter was at its worst in June with the 9.00 am weather overcast and miserable but the promise of better things to come so it wasn't surprising to our lowest number front the sausage sandwiches and hot drinks at Shoalhaven Heads. July's weather was just much better than June when the hardy motorcycle riders did the trip to Cordeaux Dam. August was washout with not one participant except me being at the departure point at 10.00am. in the With the weather improving September’s destination was Alexandra lake on the southern highlands stove and billy required, and larger group of hungry enthusiasts along for the ride. With the atmosphere becoming more comfortable in October for motor bicycle riding Nepean Dam was next on the agenda. November took us to Fitzroy Falls area where the unforeseen happened the main BBQ and hot water enclosure were out of action but other BBQ’s in the parkland were functioning so no hot drinks to which everybody took in stride and ate more. December concluded the year with Cataract Dam serving the assembled group to a host of goodies for the Christmas occasion. In conclusion brother Wayne and I agreed the Dam Wednesday rides for the year a great success. Here are some of the year’s statistics 314 attendees for 10 events ,124 club plated bikes ridden greatest number of attendees 49 plus 2 lizards, the smallest number was 14, this still averages 31 1/2 per ride. Who knows how many snags or loaves of bread, tea coffee and milk, but most importantly 316 happy mouths eating and talking and enjoying days of motorcycle enthusiasm, whether riding bikes or driving in cars. An idea that grew, oh Wayne and I would like to thank the helpers, the willing participants and comradeship of fellow riders.

All the best in motorcycling.
