Thus, both in terms of quantities produced and the value of its products, the vine constitutes a particularly important cultivation. THE HOST PLANT AND ITS CULTIVATION The original area of distribution of the genus Vitis was broken up by the separation of the continents; although numerous species developed, Vitis vinifera has been cultivated from the beginning for its fruit and wine producing qualities (43, 75, 184). This cultivation commenced in Transcaucasia about 6000 B.C. Subsequent human migration spread its cultivation, at firstaround the Mediterranean coast; the Roman conquest led to the plant's progressive establishment in Europe, almost to its present extent. Use of pheromones and other semiochemicals in integrated production IOBC wprs Bulletin Vol. 25(•) 2002 pp. •-• Control of Sparganothis pilleriana Schiff. and Lobesia botrana Den. & Schiff. in German vineyards using sex pheromone-mediated mating disruption Friedrich Louis, Anne Schmidt-Tiedemann, Karl-Josef Schirra State Education and Research Center for Agriculture, Viticulture and Horticulture, 67435 Neustadt/Wstr., Germany Abstract: Investigations were conducted from 1996 to 2000 to determine the feasibility of con- trolling the tortricid pest Sparganothis pilleriana Schiff. using its sex pheromone. Intitially, dif- ferent pheromone blends were tested in the field and the results have been published in previous papers. In 2000, after treating three generations of the pest with pheromone, the larval infestation was finally evaluated. The pheromone treatment reached a very good efficacy in reducing the larvae. Evaluation of larval density in 2000 after using mating disruption to control three genera- tions of the pest revealed that pheromone could provide economic control. Investigations on the use of the mating disruption technique against another very important tortricid in German viticul- ture, Lobesia botrana Den. & Schiff., showed the control of this pest with pheromones was very effective. Most importantly, mating disruption was effective against an occasional third generation of this pest that cannot be controlled using insecticide. The use of pheromone and insecticide could reduce the density of L. botrana to levels where pheromone alone could be used to achieve economic control. Harper's Island Wetlands Butterflies & Moths (2020)
Introduction Harper’s Island Wetlands (HIW) nature reserve, situated close to the village of Glounthaune on the north shore of Cork Harbour is well known for its birds, many of which come from all over northern Europe and beyond, but there is a lot more to the wildlife at the HWI nature reserve than birds. One of our goals it to find out as much as we can about all aspects of life, both plant and animal, that live or visit HIW. This is a report on the butterflies and moths of HIW. Butterflies After birds, butterflies are probably the one of the best known flying creatures. While there has been no structured study of them on at HIW, 17 of Ireland’s 33 resident and regular migrant species of Irish butterflies have been recorded. Just this summer we added the Comma butterfly to the island list. A species spreading across Ireland in recent years possibly in response to climate change. Hopefully we can set up regular monitoring of the butterflies at HIW in the next couple of years. Butterfly Species Recorded at Harper’s Island Wetlands up to September 2020. It outlines the mission-related goals, objectives, and anticipated accomplishments as well as the approach for conducting a Grape Commodity survey and control program and the related roles and responsibilities of the Kansas Department of Agriculture and USDA-APHIS-PPQ as negotiated. I) OBJECTIVES AND NEED FOR ASSISTANCE In 1985, Kansas passed the Farm Winery Act establishing guidelines for wineries and by 2005, 13 licensed farm wineries in Kansas produced 50,000 gallons of wine from only 170 total acres of grapes. In January 2010, the number of licensed farm wineries had grown to 23 located in 21 counties from central to northeastern Kansas. In 2010, the total number of acres of grapes in Kansas vineyards was 342.1 acres on 73 farms and this continues to grow. There were 174.1 acres of grapes harvested with 354.7 tons of grapes produced. Over 60 percent of grapes produced are used at their own operations. The total value in 2010 of grapes produced was $401,150 and this continues to rise. -

The newly recorded moths and butterflies were resting in caves during daytime in the the warm season, three species were also overwintering there. We observed Catocala elocata at 28 cave inspections, followed by Mormo maura (18), Catocala nupta (7), Peribatodes rhomboidaria, and Euplagia quadripunctaria (6). More than half of the species have been repeatedly observed in caves in Austria or abroad, so their relationship with such sites is apparently not completely random. Since the increase of records in Austria coincided with a considerable rise in the annual number of hot days (maximum temperatures ≥30°C) from 2015 onwards, we interpret the growing inclination of certain Lepidoptera towards daytime sheltering in caves as a behavioral reaction to climate warming. Grapevine is vulnerable to a range of pests, one of these being mites. Plant-parasitic mites are extremely damaging pests with a rapid generation time, high fecundity and a tendency to over-exploit their hosts. Disconcertingly, the diversity of mites in vineyards in South Africa is virtually unknown. Surveys have been done with predatory mites and phytophagous mites being recorded, but no recent studies focussing on their ecology, pest status and seasonal cycles have been collected. The aim of this study was to survey phytophagous and predatory mite diversity and to investigate pest status of the plant feeding mites of South African grapevine, including the recently introduced, invasive Brevipalpus lewisi. -

ABSTRACT To re-evaluate Columerus spp. in Egypt, mites were collected from vineyard orchards Vitis vinifera L. throughout all provinces of Egypt during years (2012 - 2014). Collected samples were examined microscopically by two methods, light microscopy using a Carl Zeiss compound and Analytical Scanning Electron Microscope. Twenty specimens were selected and divided into two sets based on the number of empodial rays (5 rays or 6 rays). The examined specimens showed that 95% from total specimens collected were found to belong to 5 empodial rays and only 5% to 6 empodial rays, either Colomerus vitis and Colomerus oculivitis separated from the same bud. In addition, three types of microtubercles were recorded, type I; elongate and more compact, type II; rounded and more wide spaced and type III; gradation from elongate to rounded. These types were observed randomly on the specimens that were identified (based on number of empodial rays only) as Co. oculivitis or (Co. cf. oculivitis) and Co. vitis or (Co. cf. vitis). Moreover, more than 50% of type I were associated with the specimens that has six empodial rays. The results also showed that the specimens with rounded microtubercles showed their absence from the beginning of the posterior seventh annuli, where eighth and ninth annuli were sparsely microtuberculate, while the specimens with elongate microtubercles were without microtubercles on the posterior sixth dorsal annuli. -

As many of you will be aware, a new verification team took over when Les Evans-Hill stepped down as County Moth Recorder at the end of 2016. The current team members are: Adrian Bicker (Living Record), Terry Box, Paul Butter, Pete Forrest, Julian Francis, Mike Hetherington, Tom Morris, Jack Oughton, Phil Sterling (micro moth County Moth Recorder) and Alison Stewart (Dorset Environmental Records Centre). After addressing a backlog in the verification of records for 2017 and 2018 the team is now in a position to produce an Annual Report for 2019. -

They live mostly on dicotyledonous plants. Colomerus novahebridensis Keifer, 1977 was described from coconut (Cocos nucifera L., Arecaceae) fruits from Vanuatu. A description of a Thai population of this species is given in this paper. -

Larvae and adult specimens of the family Tortricidae (Lepidoptera), which are collected from cultural lands and surroundings of Afyon, Amasya, Bolu, Burdur, Düzce, Isparta, Kırıkkale, Konya and Niğde provinces during 2000-2004, and previously collected 1005 specimens that had been collected from the same region and have been kept in the collection of Plant Protection Central Research Institute Plant Protection Museum are examined. Larvae specimens are collected from the culture plants that they feed on and adult specimens are collected with the use of either light traps or by Nets. According to the field observations and literature, the identified 34 species are considered to be pests or to become pests when ecological conditions are suitable. Archips rosanus (Linnaeus, 1758) is observed to be the most common species. Each species is presented with original references, synonyms, collection data of the specimens, food plants of the larvae, and distribution in Turkey and throughout the world.
