C. Gregory Biographical History Henry Charles Gregory was born in West Court, Callan, Co. Kilkenny on the 10 August 1827. He was the son of the Reverend William Gregory (1792– 1874), the Rector of Fiddown, Co. Kilkenny. H. C. Gregory’s great grandfather, Robert Gregory, was chairman of the Old East India Company during the stormy times of Clive and Warren Hastings, and subsequently was MP for Rochester for many years. His grandfather, William Gregory, was Under Secretary for Ireland from 1813 to 1831, during which time he was twice offered a Baronetcy, which he refused, and so on his retirement he was made a Privy Councillor.

Journal of Social Sciences 3 (3) 2020 SITES OF CINEMATOGRAPHIC MEMORY: “BLACK’47” AS A CONSTRUCTION OF THE IRISH PAST Mohamed Salah Harzallah Associate Professor of Irish and British Studies, University of Sousse, Tunisia [email protected] Abstract. This article deals with how the history of the Great Irish Famine of the 1840s is reconstructed and presented to the global viewers of the film Black’47 (2018). It shows that the film’s narrative reflected a Nationalist perception of the Irish past which condemns the role of the British politicians of the time. It also concludes that the film provides an opportunity for the Irish in Ireland and abroad with a site of cinematographic memory that transcends the national borders of Ireland and engages the public in the process of remembering and reconstructing the history of this calamity. Keywords: Irish film, Great Irish Famine, memory, public history, Black 47, Irish history The Great Irish Famine is a watershed event in Ireland, the memory of which has survived in the Irish collective memory until the present day. In the last two decades, a plethora of publications dealt with the Famine events from different perspectives while dividing scholars into three major groups. Nationalist, Revisionist and Post- Revisionist historians provided divergent views about what happened in Ireland in the 1840s. Apart from professional historians, the filmmaker Lance Daly contributed to the construction of the Famine events in his film Black’47 (2018). He attempted to show how the Irish lived under British rule in the year 1847 - the peak of Famine. Traditional historians, who show commitment to method and training, have shown a rejection of films as a source of information 73 Mohamed Salah Harzallah – Sites of Cinematographic Memory as filmmakers often sacrifice truth to an emotional and subjective construction of the events.

An estimated one million Irish died and another two million emigrated during the years of 1845-1849, and the Famine remains a critical event in Irish history: it altered the course of literature, religion, landscape, and various other aspects of Irish life. One of the aspects of life that shifted, but whose presence has remained constant throughout Ireland‟s history, is poetry. Poetry‟s role in the course of Irish history has taken various turns over the centuries leading up to the Famine; it is in the post-Famine years, however, that poetry takes on an increasingly important role in accounting for its nation‟s history and continuing to build a national literary identity. Poetry itself is a medium that speaks the unspeakable: elements such as metaphor, rhythm, form, and sound work to complement content while simultaneously evoking emotional aspects that are crucial to fully capturing certain events. Contemporary Famine poetry, specifically, breaches the silence of the Famine through its reimagining of people, places, and events.

North Fitzroy has not had the same attention from historians as the southern part of the suburb, though less than twenty years separate the two areas, and it is older than most other suburbs of Melbourne. It is hoped that this publication will encourage research on other topics relating to North Fitzroy.

    Nation's Bishops Arrive for Golden Tribute Catholic bishops from across the nation have begun arriving in Adelaide for tomorrow's tribute to Adelaide's Archbishop Leonard Faulkner. Twenty four bishops and 109 priests from all corners of Australia will celebrate a golden anniversary for Archbishop Faulkner in St Francis Xavier's Cathedral at 10:30am. The Mass will celebrate a significant milestone in the life of Adelaide's Catholic community - the 50th anniversary of Archbishop Faulkner's ordination as a priest in Rome on January 1, 1950. The Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Francesco Canalini, who is the Vatican's official representative in Australia, will concelebrate the Mass with the Australian bishops, including the Archbishop of Melbourne, Perth and Canberra/Goulburn. Bishop Eugene Hurley, Bishop of Port Pirie, and many priests from his diocese, will also attend. In an act which represents the continuity and harmony of the leadership of the Adelaide church, the homily will be delivered by Archbishop James Gleeson, Emeritus Archbishop of Adelaide - who retired from his active leadership role when Archbishop Faulkner was appointed Archbishop of Adelaide in 1985.     VATICAN II AS I EXPERIENCED IT Michael Costigan* A memorable Roman autumn Autumn is an enchanting time in Rome. By October the relentless heat of July and August, from which many of the Romans themselves flee, is only an uncomfortable memory. The days are shorter, often blessed by cloudless skies, with mild sunshine enhancing the golden glow of some of the ancient and modern buildings, especially in the late afternoon. The Romans, including the Pope and his court, have returned, the number of tourists has declined, the schools and universities are open for business and hot roasted chestnuts are on sale at street corners – or used to be in my day. After living through nine Roman autumns as a seminarian and student- priest between 1952 and 1961, I welcomed the chance in 1963 to experience one more of those magical seasons, probably my last and certainly the most memorable of all. I was there that year for the second of the four autumnal sessions of the Second Vatican Council, as a priest-reporter commissioned to cover the event for the Melbourne Catholic Advocate, of which I was the Associate Editor, as well as for three other Australian Catholic weekly newspapers. With the Australian Catholic Historical Society marking the 50th anniversary this year of the opening of Vatican II by making that event the theme of several of the monthly papers scheduled for 2012, the Society’s President suggested I help to set the scene by painting a picture of what it was actually like to be at the Council. My writings and diary My memory of the 77 days I spent in Rome during that autumn is aided by the voluminous reports I mailed back to Australia and by a pamphlet subsequently published by the Australian Catholic Truth Society with the title Vatican Council Survey, in which I summarised those reports.1 In addition, I kept a rough diary in an exercise book in which, usually before retiring late at night, I noted my daily activities in and around the Council.
