Biographical History

Henry Charles Gregory was born in West Court, Callan, Co. Kilkenny on the 10 August 1827. He was the son of the Reverend William Gregory (1792– 1874), the Rector of , Co. Kilkenny. H. C. Gregory’s great grandfather, Robert Gregory, was chairman of the Old during the stormy times of Clive and Warren Hastings, and subsequently was MP for Rochester for many years. His grandfather, William Gregory, was Under Secretary for Ireland from 1813 to 1831, during which time he was twice offered a Baronetcy, which he refused, and so on his retirement he was made a Privy Councillor. Mr. Gregory was also a first cousin of the Right Honourable Sir William Gregory, who was a Member of Parliament for Dublin City and afterwards for , and subsequently Governor of Ceylon.

Mr. Gregory qualified as a solicitor and served as both a Magistrate and a Justice of the Peace. He spent many years working as an Assistant Commissioner for the Irish Land Commission. He married twice, firstly to Charlotte Anne Stevenson, youngest daughter of the Rev. Charles Butler Stevenson, with whom he had nine children. She died on the 5 June 1879 and Gregory remarried on the 8 December, 1884. His second wife, Alicia Fanny, was the second daughter of Arthur Gambell of Washbrook, Co. Westmeath. They had 3 children together.
