Wexford. The soil is a moderately freely draining brown earth. The wood is on a steep slope, adjacent to a tributary of the River Slaney. There is a small narrow strip of wet woodland which is subject to seasonal flooding. Two types of woodland can be identified at this site. Dry areas of the site are dominated by sessile oak (Quercus petraea), and beech (Fagus sylvatica) is occasional. Hazel (Corylus avellana) is abundant in the shrub layer, and holly (Ilex aquifolium) and hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) also occur here. Rubus fruticosus agg. is abundant. The field layer is sparse in the dry woodland, and contains Oxalis acetosella and Hyacinthoides non-scripta among other herbs. Melica uniflora also occurs in this part of the wood. Within the wetter areas of the site wet willow/ash/alder woodland is common. Here, grey willow (Salix cinerea) is abundant with alder (Alnus glutinosa) and ash (Fraxinus excelsior). The field layer is composed of Oenanthe crocata, Filipendula ulmaria and Carex remota. Light grazing occurs in the wood. Wexford. The soil is a moderately freely draining brown earth. The canopy is dominated by pedunculate oak (Quercus robur), with occasional beech (Fagus sylvatica) and sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus). Along the boundary ditch, wych elm (Ulmus glabra) and wild cherry (Prunus avium) are present. A large badger sett is located here. The species and structural diversity of the woodland is poor. Holly (Ilex aquifolium) and hazel (Corylus avellana) are the principal shrub layer components. The field layer is dominated by Rubus fruticosus agg and Pteridium aquilinum and appears highly disturbed in places. The oaks are widely spaced and even aged. Wexford. The western part of the wood lies along the lower part of the Owenavorragh River. The northern part is adjacent to the coast, and this area lies partly on a dune system. The central part of the site has patchy canopy cover and has been recently thinned of conifers. An area in the southeast of the site is characterised by mature pedunculate oak (Quercus robur), ash (Fraxinus excelsior) and occasional sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus) with no understorey and a field layer often dominated by bramble (Rubus fruticosus agg.). Releve 1 was recorded here. Parts of this area, particularly where there is a sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus) canopy, have a field layer dominated by Allium ursinum and Hyacinthoides non-scripta. The western part of the central area is owned by Coillte and is categorised as conifer woodland and oak-ash-hazel woodland. The long narrow western part of the site that lines the Owenavorragh River is a conifer plantation. In the river floodplain there are field layer species typical of wet conditions including Filipendula ulmaria, Angelica sylvestris and Carex remota. In the eastern section of the site, much of which was recently given to NPWS by Coillte, the dune slack woodland has either a sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus) or conifer canopy. The field layer has abundant Phyllitis scolopendrium in places. There are small areas of grey willow (Salix cinerea) scrub in wet patches here. A number of exotic invasive species occur in the site. These include rhododendron (Rhododendron ponticum), cherry laurel (Prunus laurocerasus), snowberry (Symphoricarpos albus) and box (Buxus sempervirens). Wexford along a tributary of the Urrin River. The site is on moderately freely-draining mineral soil. For the most part, the canopy is dominated by sessile oak (Quercus petraea) and downy birch (Betula pubescens). In these areas, there is a subcanopy of sessile oak (Quercus petraea) and a shrub layer of holly (Ilex aquifolium). Hyacinthoides non-scripta and Teucrium scorodonia occur in the field layer. Small, well-drained areas are characterised by a canopy of ash (Fraxinus excelsior) with a hazel (Corylus avellana) subcanopy and a blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) shrub layer. Hyacinthoides non-scripta and Oxalis acetosella occur in the field layer here. There is a strip of wet woodland on gleys along the stream which has a downy birch (Betula pubescens) dominated canopy. Additional species found here include grey willow (Salix cinerea) and alder (Alnus glutinosa). There is a subcanopy of sessile oak (Quercus petraea) and a shrub layer of holly (Ilex aquifolium). The field layer contains species associated with wet areas such as Caltha palustris, Mentha aquatica and Ranunculus flammula among others.
