The villains of Snow White, The Little Mermaid, Rapunzel, Hansel and Gretel, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty are all witches; women who wield dark magic to maledict the innocent. In stark contrast, Formosan aboriginal mythology villains take on decidedly dissimilar roles. In the Paiwan story of Pali, for example, Pali is a young boy who, through no fault of his own, is cursed with a pair of red eyes that instantaneously kill all living things that they see. Pali’s identity and the reasons for his evil acts are diametrically opposed to those found in “typical” Western tales. This article investigates the identities and motives of villains in Formosan aboriginal stories. Despite the unfortunate lack of related material in English, Taiwan Indigene: Meaning Through Stories (臺灣原住民的神話與傳說套書) offers a unique look into the redirection of English literature to source from a wider geographic and ethnographic perspective and serves as the primary data source for this research. Works done in this vein indicate a greater openness toward the “other” ethnic groups that remain almost completely absent from English literature. The identities of the villains and the elements motivating their nefarious deeds are investigated in detail. Can the villains of such stories be grouped broadly according to identity? If so, what aspects can be used to describe that identity? What root causes can be identified with regard to the malevolent acts that they perpetrate? The ambitions behind this study include facilitating a lifting of the veil on the mysterious cultures native to Formosa and promoting a greater understanding of, and appreciation for, the rich and complex myths of the Formosan aboriginal peoples. -

Music Culture and the Self-Presentation of Indigenous Musicians on Social Media in Contemporary Taiwan Guo-Ting Lin A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of Westminster for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy April 2021 Abstract The purpose of this research was to provide an indigenous perspective of popular culture in Taiwan as a means to re-examine Taiwanese contemporary identity. In-depth qualitative interviews and digital ethnography were adopted to collect data about indigenous musicians' self-presentation on social media. Being an indigenous musician in postmodern Taiwan is a highly contested phenomenon, as social media offers a double-edged sword requiring a conjunctional analysis that delves into both the past and the contemporary. This research unpacks the performance of contemporary indigenous musicians in the post-digital media age and offers five findings. Firstly, the indigenous musicians interviewed for the purpose of this research use social media to perform their indigenous identities to wider audiences, both indigenous and non- indigenous. Secondly, identity performances of indigenous musicians on social media are inspired by and reflect the richness and diversity of Taiwanese society. -

1 Introduction: Documenting and Revitalizing AustronesianLanguages Margaret Florey Monash University This chapter provides an overview of the issues and themes which emerge throughout this book. It begins with a brief description of language revitalization activities which are taking place in the Pazeh, Kahabu and Thao aboriginal communities in the mountains and plains of Taiwan. The activities of elders in these communities exemplify the growth of language activism. These case studies lead to a discussion of changes in the field of linguistics and the alliances which are being built between linguists and community lan- guage activists. The 11 chapters in the book are then reviewed within the key themes of international capacity building initiatives, documentation and revitalization activities, and computational methods and tools for language documentation. 1. LANGUAGE ACTIVISM AND PARTICIPATORY PRACTICE. In June 2007, a small group of scholars from Australia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, the UK, and the USA traveled with Taiwanese scholars and language activists to the Pazeh, Kahabu and Thao aboriginal communities in the mountains and plains of Taiwan. Led by ecologist and activist Yih-Ren (Oliver) Lin and several of his graduate students, the participants observed and learned about the range of activities which have been developed in these communities to revitalize their severely endangered languages. Pazeh people face the challenge that their endangered plains language is not officially recognized by the Taiwanese Government. While struggling for recognition, the church community is at the center of language activities. Spurred on by linguistic assessments that only one very elderly fluent speaker of this language remains and that the language would disappear by the end of the twentieth century (Gordon 2005; Li 2000: 89), church members began supporting their language. -

Specifically, we study the use case of Taiwanese Indigenous Peoples' tribe classifications and the indigenous constituencies of the legislature electoral representation. We compare four finer-grained taxonomies for indige- nous people with the coarse-grained indigenous peoples' electoral constituencies that only recognize two regions (Lowland, Highland). The four taxonomies are: the recognized tribes in the past, the recognized tribes in the present, other pos- sible tribes, and re-scaled groups based on population. We employ a logic-based taxonomy alignment approach using Region Connection Calculus (RCC-5) rela- tions to align these taxonomies. -

IRB protocol # : 11-0615 iii Rowen, Ian (M.A., Geography) Chinese Tourists in Taiwan: Tourism and State Territoriality Thesis directed by Tim Oakes ABSTRACT After years of travel bans and despite an ongoing dispute over sovereignty and territory, Chinese tourists have poured into Taiwan since 2008. In this thesis, I develop an argument, based on theories of governmentality and performativity, that treats borders and territories as dynamic processes rather than places. I use this theory first to argue that tourism should be treated as a technology of state territorialization in general, and then to analyze the spatial politics of tourism between China and Taiwan in particular. I apply this analytical framework to ethnographic data collected during fieldwork in tourist sites in Taiwan in summer 2012. I conclude that tourism is producing multiple sensations of stateness in Taiwan, and exacerbating contradictions between China and Taiwan’s programs of state territorialization. -

Editorial A Time of Change -The Era of Indigenous Movements The early 1980s marked the budding stage of awareness of Taiwanese indigenous peoples’ rights. Although Taiwan was still under martial law at that time, many indigenous publications began to appear on campus and indigenous intellectuals also marched on the streets. Taiwan ended its martial law in 1987, and bans on newspapers and magazines were lifted; consequently, a large number of media appeared, ushering in an era of knowledge liberation. The movement also provided a platform for the marginalized voice of indigenous peoples to be heard by mainstream media. During that time, the so-called opposing political party media played an important role in promoting democracy. San Pedro Copyrighted by Chia-Chieh Wu 2017 Abstract The purpose of this study was to examine Taiwanese fourth-year and fifth-year pre-service music teachers’ preferences for, familiarity with, and willingness to teach six ethnic music styles (i.e., Chinese, Hokkien, Hakka, Taiwanese Aboriginal, Vietnamese, and Indonesian) to the largest student cultural groups in Taiwan. Participants (N = 126) listened to 18 excerpts and rated their preferences for, familiarity with, and willingness to teach the ethnic music examples on seven-point Likert-type scales. As a validity check, the pre-service music teachers were required to identify the ethnic language in which each music example was performed. However, their abilities to identify the languages were not strongly correlated with their preferences for, familiarity with, and willingness to teach the music examples. Findings indicated that the pre-service music teachers’ preference and familiarity ratings were positively correlated to their willingness to teach the six ethnic music styles. Additionally, the participants’ enrollment year, and the interaction between the year of enrollment and certificate level significantly affected the participants’ familiarity with the ethnic music styles. -
